Killzone 2 -- High Definition Awful

Isaiah Taylor of ITbrog.com writes:"I'd like to think that, with great graphical power comes great narrative responsibility. Killzone 2 may have an amazing multiplayer, but the single player makes me humor the idea of an online-only Killzone game for the good of the franchise's future."

Chaostar5539d ago (Edited 5539d ago )

Holy crap I've traveled back to 2009! Knew I shouldn't have went over 88mph on the way home.

edit:
from the article...

"when I played the single player campaign, I got so bored I set the difficulty higher for the purpose of being entertained. Big mistake. Turns out, one hereditary trait of European-developed games is that, if you ask for a harder game -- you get one."

WaaaaAH!! too hardz!!

callahan095539d ago

A trait of European-developed games is that, if you ask for a harder game -- you get one.
???????

Uh... what? What the **** did I just read? That has got to be the most ridiculous criticism in the history of the world.

CaptainGreece5538d ago

That was epic fail that comment.

Istanbull5538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

We PS3 gamers are used to ridicilous and pathetic statements by these so called "journalists"

PS3 games are always nit picked to the bone, we had complaints about "too much variety", "too much content" etc

Killzone 2 was an epic game, Killzone 3 is even more godly.

Let these fools play their Call of Duty 392818 or one of those boring 360 shooter franchises

chilled2m5538d ago

@ Istanbull

Kudos for spelling and grammar so poor, I had to read over the statement several times in order to know what you were saying.

Additional kudos for the stealth 360 trolling. N4G wouldn't be the same without ya buddy!

Having said that; I have to admit, the article is way off base from what most others have to say about the game. I felt as though Killzone 2, while not exceedingly excellent, managed to do quite a lot of things well. The thing about changing the difficulty level and then subsequently being frustrated def made me LOL though..

Istanbull5538d ago

@chilled: what was so bad about my grammar and spelling? You know this is the internet and English is not my mother tongue.

Anyways, I put in Killzone 2, went to play a match in Radec Academy and Blood Gracht, damn lots of memories in those maps.

I wish Killzone 3 had the same dedicated servers as Killzone 2.

Instinct_Gamer5538d ago

@ chilled2m

Do you even know any other languages?

You make people that speak english sound like ethnocentric douchebags.
I read over his comment and understood it perfectly clear and he made a perfectly good point about these creepy douchebags living in Mom's basement calling themselves journalists, shitting all over developers who are trying to develop quality software to win the hearts and minds of the consumers.
While other companies use money for marketing and to pay "journalist" to smears the opponents to make the consumer buy, instead of producing a quality product themselves.
And don't act dumb, you should know that it happens. Business is business. So be a conscience consumer.

HolyOrangeCows5538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

"I got so bored I set the difficulty higher for the purpose of being entertained. Big mistake. Turns out, one hereditary trait of European-developed games is that, if you ask for a harder game -- you get one"
-
WAAA! This game was too hard for me!

"One thing that needs improvement, in games in general, is when playing at a higher difficulty -- typically the computer artificial intelligence improves. In Killzone 2, if you shoot and miss, the crafty Helgahst will hide behind cover, flank and advance on you aggressively. What usually goes unrecognized is how rock-dumb your computer friendly A.I. plays"
-
HINT: Increasing difficulty MAY lead to you needing to rely on teammates less often.

"From the original Killzone, Jan Templar commands your unit to invade a planet [of which you’re never given a clear reason why]"
-
I know what the problem is....you can't FOLLOW a story.

kneon5538d ago

Well I think he had to put it in there for the COD crowd. If you've played the last couple then you'd know that playing on veteran is only a lttle more difficult than on the easier difficulties.

KZ2 on elite is a big jump in difficulty. KZ3 on elite is not nearly as difficult. The only place it comes close is in the closing stages of the game.

chilled2m5538d ago

@Instinct

Why yes, I do know another language. I know English and Arabic. Before the post was edited, there was more than enough confusion. This has nothing to do with being an English snob. This particular user is more than capable of writing thoughtful, coherent posts when he/she wishes to, yet chose not to.

Funny how you didn't seem to notice the obvious trolling that he/she was doing. The article had NOTHING to do with 360, yet Istanbul managed to throw a little jab in there. I swear, I could be talking about cheeseburgers and the guy would find some way to add a 360 jab in there.

jadenkorri5538d ago

wow people still whining and crying over a game that IMO was an awesome game. God if you don't like it, sell it and maybe sell you ps3 at the same time. I love the story of Killzone, and have played KZ3 through medium and elite difficulty, Im going through again for the 3rd time in co-op with my nephew whens he's over, but I spend my time playing Multiplayer. And griping for elite difficulty of any game is always a trail and error, did you not expect to what, not die on the most difficult game level.

humbleopinion5538d ago

I think that you miss his complaint.
He didn't complain that he didn't expect the game to be hard in the higher difficulty level, but rather that this difficulty level made him notice another issue with the game voice acting described in the next paragraph (that's a leading sentence):
"While dying several times over, the voice acting becomes an issue. Not that it’s garishly bad, notice that the talent is competent, but the sound engineer isn’t. Music cues sometimes drop out entirely and the rubbery mouth sync becomes incredibly comedic."

Not that I agree with this article (which is very poorly written), but he's making a valid point which you apparently missed.

Instinct_Gamer5538d ago

I give him a 3/10. I mean I just didn't believe that he believed what he wrote. An obvious troll and hes lucky to get a 3 from me. I only give the 3 cause its so funny that he is reviewing a game from 2009.

chilled2m5538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

Ah well, some people lack the hand eye coordination to play the game past anything but easy.. The funny part is when they bitch about it.

lee_ten5538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

...that's one shitty article, i tell you.

Instinct_Gamer5538d ago

"something shooters of [I feel] a higher integrity should take note of.."

Killzone 2 has a lower integrity than what shooters author???
Isaiah Taylor please enlighten on the reader what the hell games your talking about. Call of Duty??? That game is the exact opposite of integrity.

Isaiah Taylor you are a horrible writer and as a journalist you lack any credibility. Your writing is subjective and shows no attempt to inform the reader an actual review of the game.
All you did from basically the first word was bash the game anyway you could and then pick out parts of the game you liked and say that you would want those in your favorite games.

Then you say that if Guerilla would release the multiplayer only with out the Single Player then you would recommend it

" If there were a way that you could download the multiplayer mode of Killzone 2, I’d easily recommend it. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case."

KIll yourself, your just wastin perfectly good air. Kill yourself.

"Killzone 2 has proven that there is only money for either a graphical revolution or a maturation of narratives in games. Never both."

Metal Gear Solid (any from MGS2 to MGS4), Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Red Dead Redemption... shall I continue?

Bboy_Izilla5539d ago

None of which are FPSs...try again.

yewles15538d ago

That line mentioned "games", not a specific genre. Try again.

Bboy_Izilla5538d ago

You probably don't want to include multiple genre's as an example of great games writing coupled with great graphics. I'm sure we can all make a list of pretty games that have awful writing...so that little list you started is resting on a weak point.

Also...Mass Effect has good writing? lol. Guess people like Syfy Channel stories.

Nate-Dog5538d ago

Don't know what you mean by helping? I gave an example of a game(s) in the stealth genre, RPG genre, action-adventure genre and action-adventure/sandbox game, they all aren't miles and miles apart obviously but even so your article mentioned the advancement in graphics and narration in games, not just FPSs. If you said FPSs that would have been a different matter and perhaps I wouldn't have commented but here were are I guess.

I don't see my list being a weak point either, I simply noted games that have advanced mature storylines/narration and decent graphics. MGS2 and MGS3 are two of the best looking games from the PS2 era, and everyone knows how convoluted the plot (particularly in MGS2, not so much MGS3) was. I certainly rate Mass Effect very highly myself although I can't speak for everyone, but it's topped the MGS series for me which has been with me since my youth and beginning in video-games so yeah, I certainly can vouch for it myself anyway.

Only FPS I could think of off of the top of my head with good graphics and a pretty darn good storyline would be Bioshock, perhaps Resistance? (Can't vouch for the ones already made, haven't played them much myself admittedly, R3 certainly looks like it's going to be pretty decent and single-player focused.)

Bboy_Izilla5538d ago

In just about every genre you've mentioned...the bad FAR outweigh the good. If you'd kept it at FPSs...we could just say that games writing in FPSs are bad, but no. So here we are. You could at least do yourself a solid and acknowledge the fact that you're pointing out 'exceptions', because it certainly aint the rule.

God of War 3, Call of Duty MW2, Medal Of Honor, Final Fantasy XIII, Resistance 2, Just about any fighting game, Magna Carta 2, Gears of War 2, Dante's Inferno...should I continue?

newn4gguy5538d ago

God of War III?

I can't take you seriously.

God of War III is the most epic thing in the history of entertainment.

Nate-Dog5538d ago

I've got to be honest (and while this'll come across as me being condescending, trust me, I'm not trying to be), I don't understand what you're trying to point out.

"In every genre you've mentioned, the bad far outweigh the good". Well yeah, I didn't say that every game in the action/adventure or stealth genre is pure gold did I? The point I initially made was against your claim that companies/devs can't make games with revolutionary/extroardinary graphics and also with mature storylines. I gave you a few examples of devs doing just that, and could give you more. If every game did it then you wouldn't have made that claim in your review/article and I wouldn't have called you out on it, right?

Also in fact you've kind of shot yourself in the foot in mentioning FFXIII. While it may not be (scratch that: isn't) everyone's cup of tea, grahpically it is the best game I've played on PS3 (although the X360 version is quite poor in that respect), and while some of the characters are quite annoying, it's storyline is actually pretty good, despite people's problems with other issues, such as a lack of towns, linearity, the combat system, among other things. FFXIII Versus too certainly looks like it's going to be a great game in the respects you mentioned too; Squeenix look like they're taking the game back to the series's roots with towns, more of an RPG and explorable world, vehicles to travel in, and the story looks like it's getting the main attention, not just gameplay or grafix. Btw most fighting games don't actually have storylines, they just give you a background on someone's story and what happens over a series of 10+ fights or so. And first I mention games from other genres, and you say that I should just be referring to things like FPSs, then I refer to FPSs aswell as what I initially referred to, and you go and mention hack 'n slashers, Fighters, JRPGs, TPSs? You're contradicting yourself.

You say

3rd Horizon Is Expected To Be A Long Ways Off, Majority Of Guerrilla Is Working On Hunters Gathering

The third mainline Horizon is expected to be a long ways off, as a majority of Guerrilla Games is working on Hunters Gathering.

twistedvoxel.com
-Foxtrot92d ago

What a waste of their time, it would be a lot different if it was a small team of theirs helping an external studio or something but to have this be one of the teams main games is just overall sad to hear.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we need Horizon 3 right now as I don't think there's much they could really do to make it stand out from Horizon II but I wanted to see a new IP from them to give the Horizon franchise some breathing space so when we did get Horizon 3 it would feel more fresh. Horizon II was a good game but you could tell when playing that it was just a sequel which felt like the main appeal was just being a more super refined version with a lot of quality of life improvements compared to the first game, even then it felt it was struggling at times to really stand out, maybe it was because it was a PS4/PS5 cross play title and didn't get to take advantage of the PS5 new tech who knows.

If this game flops, it's just going to give people more of an excuse online to hate on the franchise even more and might end up hurting the anticipation for Horizon 3. They were better off doing a new IP or a reboot of Killzone

JEECE90d ago

Exactly. Sony seems to be getting things exactly wrong with Horizon. It's the type of IP that needs to disappear for a few years and then come back with a third game that really feels like an evolution from 2, rather than just an iterative sequel, like 2 was from 1. It isn't the type of franchise that is going to support a ton of spinoffs.

Sircolby4590d ago (Edited 90d ago )

After watching that trailer...the chances of it flopping are pretty high. That trailer did not look good. Disappointing because I actually enjoy the Horizon series, but Hunters Gathering looks like it will miss the mark.

Eonjay90d ago

For the love of God... don't believe this. This whole story is engagement farming and is based on a one word tweet without context. The obsession with every whim of Jason Scherer is stupid.

Profchaos90d ago

The way Sony is trying to Disneyfy horizon is already hurting any interest I have in the franchise

I'm just hired of the whole thing now honestly it feels oversaturated even though we only have two mainline games

We have two live service games, a VR game a movie coming and remasters of the first game

I'm over it

Honestly, I can't say I mind this. Forbidden West was a good game but it didn't exactly leave me desperate for it's successor.

neutralgamer199290d ago

Horizon 3 will most likely be a launch window title for PS6

isarai_lee90d ago

Well I loved the first game, and while i acknowledge how much of a step up the second game, was it's insane! I absolutely did not like the second game from a gameplay standpoint. It seemed woefully unbalanced and a shocking amount of glitches that I'm surprised review sites did not report on.

But this series is a rare case of "just because it sells gangbusters, doesn't mean it's popular" like yes the mainline series sells a ton, but you wouldn't know looking at how it has failed to enter pop culture like God of War has. So trying to sell things by throwing it's name around just isn't going to work, the flop that was the lego game was proof enough of that, and this may be exhibit B for the same case.

I hope im wrong, i mean who doesn't want more fun games, but i just don't see it, and i hope their next game is a new IP cause otherwise it's gotta be so good it cleanses my pallet of the bad taste forbidden west left in my mouth

MayorPauline90d ago

Indeed. I glitched in between obstructions on more than one occasion. I also remember gliding for an extended period of time and the game abruptly blacked out for a few seconds. I thought it crashed but it came back on. That was on the PS4 version of the game.

isarai_lee90d ago

More than a few occasions i was getting trapped inside geometry and would have to fast travel or die to eacape, also had like 4 campfires i could not use because it would spawn me in the ground. Also has an issue where the longer my play session the worse the framerate would get till it was no bs like 3fps and i would have to restart the application which kinda sucks when you're in the middle of a loooong fight mid mission. I actually stopped playing for a few weeks until that specific problem got patched. This was all on the ps5 version for me

raWfodog90d ago

I had an excellent experience with Forbidden West because I didn’t play it until the complete edition released a year and half after the original release date. I’ve learned a long time that it’s best to wait until these big games are patched up because they almost always have bugs and glitches when they first release.

DivineHand12590d ago

I am confused. What was wrong with the Horizon 2 gameplay?

The focus of the game was to use the appropriate weapons to detatch craftable parts before killing the machine. This added a lot of challenge to the fights. They also revamped the melee system to allow alloy to do combos and special abilities were added that applied buffs.

Can you provide examples?

isarai_lee90d ago

Maybe they rebalanced it after the fact but playing through it at launch and the few months that followed, if you werent using corrosion/acid in the late game, you were getting your a$$ handed to you ESPECIALLY with the final boss fight. Literally had to load a previous save because i didn't have any major corrosion weapons for the final fight, and it wasn't an isolated incident as lots of people were online having the same experience. Also ran into more than a few enemies that just seemed to have crazy overpowered attacks for literally every situation like the Babboons and the shellsnappers, ESPECIALLY the shellsnappers that just spam the leap attack then burrow into the ground constantly giving little to no opportunity to target weak points.

The mellee ststem was fine except a few melee pit challenges, those got real stupid near the end getting one shot before i could even move after the timer.

-Foxtrot90d ago

I think the best way of looking at it is Sony seems to want to force the success as quick as possible rather than letting it happen naturally over a longer period of time.

God of War has been nurtured for a long time and even when the series started to get stale and over done (there was far too many games coming out) they paused long enough to softboot it with the 2018 God of War that lifted it straight back to the top.

Horizon hasn't been on that journey and even if you compare it to Killzone, a franchise where even by the release of Shadow Fall started to feel a little stale, has had more content (not just games) thrown out in 9 years since the first release compared to what Killzone had in the same period, Shadow Fall being the last game released in its 9th year.

JEECE89d ago

It's weird to think about, but the gap between God of War: Ascension and the 2018 Reboot was basically the same as the gap between the first two Horizon games (five years). I guess the fact that most people (including me) stopped at GOW 3 made it seem longer.

Profchaos90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

Yeah there's a weird phenomenon where sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place not because they are amazing and phenomenal successes in every aspect sometimes something needs to be just good enough

Horizon to me feels like the franchise especially 2that's just good enough in most regards Nd it came early in the ps5s life but you don't see a cult following like you do mass effect or the last of us most people are like ok cool that was fun enough and leave it at that

I actually think we will see a massive drop off for 3 because people will feel like it's crossed the bridge to being to much

JEECE89d ago

"sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place"

In a way it feels like that is true for Horizon (particularly the second one), but the series is also notorious for launching near major competition. The first one launched right before BOTW (different platform, but it still resulted in a ton of comparisons), and the second one launched at almost the same time as Elden Ring.

PlayStation Studios Could Embrace Decima Engine As Guerrilla Expands Developer Support

Some of Sony's first-party PlayStation Studios may be developing their future titles using Guerrilla Games' Decima engine.

twistedvoxel.com
RaidenBlack483d ago (Edited 483d ago )

Might be for studios which were using older engines or UE4 like Bend Studio.
Sony's big 5 studios' engines are all unique to some degree and I want it stay that way for future new games.
Remakes can be done using Decima if required like Bloodborne or Uncharted 1.
Imagine From Software embracing Decima for future titles.
But then again Until Dawn Remake was done using UE5, when the original was made using Decima.

VersusDMC483d ago

Maybe ease of use is what made it a better choice. And it was already tested by a another studio with kojima productions having shipped death stranding on Decima.

Eonjay482d ago

I wonder if this is for studios beyond SIE and KP. Decima has also proven itself of platforms beyond PS5 so I wonder how comfortable they would be with allowing non first party use it wherever?

Minute Man 721483d ago

They should use the Ready at Dawn engine

DarXyde483d ago

That engine is mighty impressive, even by today's standards. The cloth simulation and gun animations are absolutely chef's kiss.

But I think it's one of those very intensive engines that will choke the hell out of the hardware and you're looking at a short and linear but very detailed experience. More or less what you get from a UE5 game that really forces the hardware (e.g., Hell blade II).

For that reason, Naughty Dog's engine is probably more practical: still extremely detailed (albeit less so) but allows for a more wide-linear experience and you're still left in awe.

But if we're going open world, absolutely Decima.

porkChop482d ago

They don't own that engine, and Ready at Dawn doesn't even exist anymore.

anast483d ago

They already have embraced it along with some other engines.

jjb1981482d ago

I'm a huge Killzone 2 fan. It's my favorite shooter of all time and I wish they'd revive the IP. I know a remake of KZ2 would do very well. My original PSN friends I met were on KZ2 and and we formed a clan. I've been itching to get that 3 star badge. Only made it to 2-star.

Eonjay482d ago

Fun fact Decima IS the evolved version of the Killzone engine.

OlderGamer17482d ago

Noppe, its build from the ground up....

CrimsonIdol482d ago

A Killzone 2 remake where the controls are actually responsive could be cool.

mike32UK482d ago

The character has weight, it was a design choice which many people happened to like. You're probably too used to the floaty controls of COD

CrimsonIdol481d ago (Edited 481d ago )

yeah I remember that argument too. Then how that argument went away when they fixed it for the sequel. having massive input delay before anything happens due to technical issues isn't an artistic choice. It's good copium though

RaiderNation482d ago

Rather than a KZ2 remake, I'd rather see them do a KZ reboot! If they're going to do a remake, I'd rather see a PS5 remake of KZ Mercenary! Hands down one of the best Vita games and the 2nd best Killzone game in the series (after KZ2).
