2K’s explanation to Kinect-less Top Spin 4 doesn’t cut it!

At the beginning of this year 123kinect found out that Top Spin 4 unfortunately would not have Kinect support. That was bad, but what was worse is that it was also confirmed it would get Playstation Move support. At that time it was unclear why Kinect support was dropped, but now the official explanation is out…and it doesn’t really cut it for 123kinect!

What doesn't cut it about Kinect not being accurate enough to detect minor wrist movements? If you're going to put "top spin" on a ball, the controller needs to be able to detect it. That's why they didn't bother. no matter how accurate the camera is, it won't be able to detect tiny twists of the wrist. plus they knew people would look goofy trying to play laggy handball.

Not to say their implementation of move was much better. I tried the demo, and was very disappointed that they didn't go for 1:1 tracking like table tennis does. It's all gesture based control.

I thought it was supposed to be the end-all gaming peripheral when it comes to motion controls? The gaming media and Microsoft told me so!

i just played the demo as well. it sucked, theres no 1:1. i mean, wtf? if you are going to implement motion control support on a tennis game, it has to be 1:1, it has to be built around that idea. if its not, then its garbage.

Can us PS3 and Move owners make our own "it doesn't cut it!" complaint?
I played a few matches in the demo the other day and just like fr0sty I was sorely disappointed by the Move implementation.

I was also hoping for 1:1 controls similar to table tennis in Sports Champions, but based on the matches I played it just feels like extremely basic gesture controls, that don't do much more than pick up the general direction of the Move controller and interpreting the swing speed as either "power" or "control".

It doesn't even notice whether I'm doing a forehand or backhand swing, but just applies with it seems to find appropriate based on player position.

Hell, I didn't even need to swing the controller to serve! Just a flick of the wrist to throw up the ball and then the rest is done automatically if there's no input from the player.

I think I'll just wait for Virtua Tennis 4 and hope it does a much better job with motion control implementation.

Or maybe the game just doesn't work properly.

123k is sad panda, because they believed the hype of Natal/Kinect. The reality, is it doesn't work in the real world of gaming. Just controlled demo's with MS reps feeding you directions around the clock.

It simply can't do the 1:1 that move can do, without severe research & development that Microsoft has ignored. Sure, tons of PC demos and tech running, but nothing in a retail game.

They answered the question, they are the developers who Fanboys pretended were going to make miracles once they had Kinect in their hand (none have done it to date)

Its not a controller replacement, and will never get there without buttons.

But i mean don't worry guys. Kinect is the best selling, highest rated device..with no games, or anything to do with it, besides read articles & watch youtube videos & wait for the future of non-controller gaming.

take some vitamins, it might take a while.

Kinect can't support the kind of precision they wanted for the game. Nothing wring with that. I can't blame 2K for not wanting to dumb down the experience.

The kicker is that Move support is pretty weak.

fr0sty5548d ago

The funniest part about it is, the way they lazily threw together the move version (gesture based, not using 1:1 tracking at all), kinect actually is way more than capable of that. So, in that regard, this article is actually correct.

Had they gone for the table tennis style 1:1 tracking approach, then it would have been an issue of kinect not quite being up to par. However, I'll agree with the author that in this particular instance, it really was them just being plain lazy.

they did explain why they didn't include kinect support.one has depth, one doesn't...

**We didn’t want a ‘lite’ or ‘dumbed down’ version.**

what is it that the creator of this article doesn't understand?

citan5549d ago

That Kinect is a failure in terms of precise controls.

kinect isnt accurate............its too casual

Blad3star5549d ago (Edited 5549d ago )

LOL - Frosty and Shadow in another Kinect article.

Who are you guys? and why browse N4G for Kinect article when you can be reading about Move instead.

Edit: Yes we get it, Kinect is not accurate and it will never do hardcore blah blah blah - your message has been herd now please stop commenting the same BS in every Kinect article.

Who are you say who can can't comment ? The article had its point of view both users pointed out that the comments made are stupid and are untrue. The developers unlike some don't like to include junk in there games so they chose not to becuase

A. You can play a tennis game on console with out a controller end of the idea is stupid

B. Kinect dose not have hardware capability to play even if there was controller attachment was available to play the game at enjoyable rate.

It’s the developers call at the end of the day.

If they felt that they could not get the experience they wanted using Kinect I’m not going to argue that.
However Kinect is starting to see an install base that will be difficult for sports game developers to ignore.

I read in another article some time ago that EA are prototyping a boxing system for kinect, hopefully golf and baseball are not too far behind.

I think Rare has perhaps unknowingly led the way for serious sports games to be developed for Kinect

sarshelyam5549d ago

Right now it's simply too early to put the ball in the court of theoretical applications. Until the day comes, the tech simply can't support much past casual and exaggerated gestures.
