1UP Interview: Epic's Next-Gen Plan

Mark Rein talks up the Samaritan tech demo, next-gen budgets, and that EGM quote about Epic revealing a new IP at GDC.

Pintheshadows5536d ago

I like Mark Rein. He is very insightful and experienced. His interviews tend to be brilliantly informative. Epic have a very good alternative to "Cliffy Flashbastard B". I also miss Warren Spector. Fuck epic mickey!

Xfanboy5536d ago (Edited 5536d ago )

I already know the planes for Epic..

1:Wait for consoles to catch up.
2:Talk how great the next game will be on PC.
3:Fail & underwhelm.
4:Release another Bulk space guy game.
5:Let Dice & Crytek lead the way to next gen glory.
6:Become the standard engine for the new generation.
7:More Cliffy B articles.
8:Repeat

Edit: at least crytek will see there demo & realize Cryengine 3 needs to push dx11 to stay on top!

"And on the PC side that makes sense to me, but for consoles it seems like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo would prefer for this kind of footage to not exist yet, since it takes attention away from their current hardware. Do you disagree?"

"MR: I do disagree. I mean, at some point in time, they're going to build new hardware. It's as simple as that -- that's just the way things work. So I think it's good for them to have things like this to show what the software developers are ready to produce."

don't hold your breath to see these advancements until new consoles arrive!

Pintheshadows5536d ago

They need the framework. He is right. Despite all this fanboy nonsense that would not work on current consoles. I giggled when the Wii was mentioned. Hell they rocking an extreme rig to show that off on. Although BF3 looks like a step up and thats out this year so the pressures on the consoles again.

xtreampro_REVENGE!5536d ago

PC's will be doing this within the next 2 years and that's where it really counts. I'm sick and tired of consoles and I think it's time to move on.

Just to be more precise this gen has made me sick and tired of consoles.

Pintheshadows5536d ago

As much as I agree with parts of what you said gaming would not be the same without Unreal tech. It is part of the furniture and they know their shit.

phntom5536d ago

That's how Deus Ex: Human Revolution should be (except for the demonic transformation).

Pintheshadows5536d ago

God I want it. Deus Ex is still my favourite game. I hope its good. It sounds it.

palaeomerus5536d ago

I think it was more of a turn to stone transformation. It's Blade Runner style cyberpunk meets X-men meets robo-cop.

Disney Should Buy Fortnite And Epic Games, Former Exec Says

The Walt Disney Company's new CEO, Josh D'Amaro, is a big fan of video games, and one former Disney executive believes D'Amaro would be smart to do even more in gaming going forward. This could include a buyout of a gaming company like Epic Games.

In an interview with CNBC, Kevin Mayer--a former Disney and TikTok executive who now runs Candle Media--said D'Amaro will need to take "bold steps" to help Disney make more money and grow its stock price. One part of this could be doing more in gaming, he said.

Apparently nobody remembers the absolute shitshow that happened when EA brought the Havok engine which was used as the default engine of the 6th generation like UE is used today.

SkilledGamer36d ago

You've got it wrong, EA bought Renderware not Havok. Havok was bought by Intel in 2007 and then Microsoft in 2015

Fishy Fingers36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Nor was it ever a widely used or considered, game engine, Renderware was. It was and still is a physics/material simulation plugin for the actual game engines.

Profchaos36d ago

Yeah you're right i was thinking of Renderware. But point still stands Renderware was used literally everywhere from games like GTA 3,VC,SA to Sonic games and Tony hawk it was really the default industry wide engine that UE is today.

If Disney takes over Epic and UE we could face a situation where they change the terms of use for other game devs big and small. They could remove the licensing agreements currently in place and impose a payment per download model like Unity did which could cripple the industry.

TOTSUKO36d ago

Fck Disney stock and their shareholders.

blacktiger36d ago

Well I can imagine DIsney with their transgender Snowwhite and black cinderally and mermaid and other garbage. Imagine video games lmao!!!

shinXseijuro36d ago

You sound like a fun person to be around .

Huey_My_D_Long35d ago

Dumbass cant even spell Cinderella but apparently he's upset by the 1997 Cinderella classic starring Brandy. Almost 20 year old movie.
Just say you dont like black people man, we all know it.

rlow136d ago

I really hope this doesn’t happen. They ruin everything that they buy. Terrible company

Zerobalance36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Trolling. Hope Disney take the Maval characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine away from Sony and make it themselves that would me laugh so hard.

"It is going to get so much worse in the video game industry...This will get worse and going to be bad and it's going to eventually get better." -Greg Miller right before it got worse

Agent7538d ago

Too many games, too many versions, download only games, game pricing, £700+ consoles, eye watering prices for controllers, four formats, gaming is one big mess.

gold_drake38d ago

id argue that epic games has alot of other revenue income other than fortnite, so their reasoning makes zero sense.
