Back when Zipper Interactive first announced they were working on a massive 256 player shooter game for the PS3 a lot of folks were skeptical about how the end product would look. There is plenty enough lag to go around when you get an 8 player game of anything going and one person has a bad connection. How could they ensure that the game would not only be playable under such a heavy burden of network activity whilst maintaining the level of graphics that todays modern consoles are delivering?

Imagine 999 players all in the same area at once shooting lasers at each other, that's Man vs Machine.
Looks incredibly stupid.
(It is probably safe to assume that this is just a Proof-of-concept-thing, but I still doubt that 1000 players fighting each other is something I want to do - seriously: That is a little overkill, isn't it? On the other hand, if the area scales for this amount of people that could be fun)
impressive from a technical standpoint and all that, but it doesn't actually look like much fun.
If they somehow managed to eliminate lag then this would be great but I see too much problems happening with this, there's already a lot of problems when there's 60 players in a PC game let alone 999.

This upcoming FPS will use server load balancing software across 6 cell servers, offering a seamless battlefield for up to 1000 players. Swedish network technology company PikkoTekk is trying to set a world record by creating a first-person shooter that can support up to 1000 players on one map. As seen in this video, the game will be playable in a browser and feature two teams: Tanks vs. Robots.
a 1000 players ?

Pikkotekk plans world record attempt using technology that “would even impress random women in bars.”
Swedish technology firm Pikkotekk has revealed it is developing an online firstperson shooter capable of 1000 simultaneous players.
“About one year ago,” Pikkotekk’s Christian Lönnholm told Rock Paper Shotgun, “we were talking with [Eve developer] CCP and we came up with the idea that if we made an MMOFPS in Unity, the technical achievement would be of such magnitude that it would even impress random women in bars.”
Hmmm i'm quite intrigued to hear more about this game.
MAG is a modern day technical achievement for consoles. Sure there are MMO's with higher play count, but MAG virtually had no lag.
zipper said in a interview they could of added more players but 256 was ideal
yes it could..
but then the graphics would be 8bit.. unless its PC only
hmmm would have to be ridiculously huge maps to fit 500 v 500...spawns spots would be interesting..
