I think sony should bring it down a little under 399 if its only going to feature 2 USB ports, to me thats not enough, even though in the end consumers can get a USB adapter that has many other USB ports on it. Hopefully its around 349.99 or 379.99 or something around there.

Everyone just wait for the official announcement from Sony because BC will most likely still be there for the PS3..I doubt Sony will take it completely away, but if you guys think its important buy the 80gb version or the 60gb..I paid 499 dollars for my PS3 and its worth the purchase because it got all the features that I desire. The only way the PS3 can be cheaper is for Sony to take things out, and I recall xbox fans was complaining how the PS3 have useless crap, and BC was not that important and now its big deal?? Fanboys always go back on their words..

No backwards compatibility at all? I think I might get the more expensive Ps3 if it also gets a price-cut(More than possible).

coz all the ps2 owners who still havent switched to next gen would lose there entire catalogue of games. And i really hope it will come to £299 in the u.k

It will have limited emulation BC like the 360. Even at that rate it will still play thousands of titles from the PSone and PS2 platforms. This is only good news for those who wanted a PS3 and could not or would not afford one. Now it's a good buy at one of the least expensive BD players and a great gaming console with many extras.

is this just play.com responding to internet rumours being as there is no price listed. no backwards compatability seams weird if they can do it in software then its basically free for them to add it. I could imagine them taking out blue movie playback but keeping the blue ray drive. no mem card reader, no wifi would be my guess, bundled with heavenly sword.

I would personally still get the 20 or 60 GB model if you can still find them. i have the 60 and BC is SOOOO important to me.

you know what i'm playing now? Final Fantasy 9, thats a 4 disk PS1 game. i just made it to disk 2.

Playing my fav games, upconverted to 1080p, and the ability to very easly transfer them to my PSP make this model priceless..

if you dont have any old school favs, or you're 14 and were not around, then i guess go for the cheapest one you can fine (if money is an issue)

60GB is discontinued. there are still plenty of them around, but i personally think they will all go this holiday season. dont forget that the 20 and 60 GB models are the only ones that are fully BC...

I thought that there were two chips involved in backward compatibility. Is this not the case? A CPU and GPU. I thought they removed one but not the other in the Pal version (80 gig). Someone enlighten me on this that knows...

*edit* nevermind, I found it. The cpu/gpu were comgined into a single chip when the playstation slim was released and therefore removing one automatically removes the other. Apparently the 80gig version is entirely backward compatible via software with no aid from legacy PS2 chips.

So now that I've answered my own question, why would this system NOT have backward compatibility? Wouldn't that be an awfully dumb thing to do?

I never had a PS2 and will never buy a PS2 game. BC will be done with software.

I think they removed the EE chip, but not the GS chip in the Euro model. With both chips removed, maybe BC compatibility is not possible due to the 4MB EDRam bandwidth - until they maybe get it running on the Cell and not RSX. Wildly guessing here - but this would explain the no SW BC.

Don't matter to me - I have the Euro model and it plays all the PS2 games I have. Would pay an extra 100 for the BC any day.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
