I don't think ANY of the consoles this generation are going to have an install base as small as gamecube... its simply not going to happen... but as always, its still way to early to be judging these young consoles against their older predeccesors...

Once price cuts occur though i think we can break the trend becasue the main problem with the 360 and ps3 is their price(minus the core 360). Because hey, not everyone can afford a 360 or a ps3 but maybe a wii or core 360.

This gen isn't going to have a 90 mil margin like last generation. Its going to be a lot more even. Though soon we will probably see a massive increase, possibly already with the 360.

p.s. for xbots, how do i know that these games will be great? very simple, developers and most these titles already have PROVED themselves. And just because you don`t know NOTHING about these games or developers, doesn`t mean, that these games won`t rock.

A console will not be really mass mainstream untill it hits 200 Euro/Dollar or close to it.

Just something you have to accept. The PS3 started at a too high price point. History has shown the most expensive consoles failed and died or became last their gen.

In that view, the PS3 has a problem. Even when they lower it to 399 Euro, the Wii is still lower priced, Microsoft will drop the 360 Premium to 279 to 299 max. and the PS3 is still the most expensive one with the fewer games.

The strategy has just been wrong Sony. Just wrong.

So dude. Why wasn't Nintendo, 10 years ago, helped with it's name brand? It was the largest console out there and then bam, a new contender came. Wrong strategy = failure when another competitor offers a better deal. If Nintendo went from nr. 1 to nr. 3, Sony can drop also. Simple as that.

Plus, you forget the brand name can be hurt a lot from negative attention/news. And the PS3 has enough of that... Mostly their own effort: this is waiting in so much things, including home from this year to 2008.

I don't get the point of paying much interest to such articles with their doomsday scenarios ALL built on the current price point and thus sales rate for the PlayStation 3.

The price will drop and then look at how well it sales, to a degree, this year and then finally 2008. With a cheaper console, Sony will sell atleast 11million consoles in 2008. You can quote me on that.

Another error/flaw in your story:

Those 120 mln. PS2 owners mostly bought a PS2 just because of it's price. @ 200 Euro/Dollar they stepped in. Plus, because their friends had one/larger installed base.

Guess what. The PS3 is the most expensive console/will reach 200 Dollar/Euro as the last one. Wii is closest, the 360 Core/Arcade is there almost, the 360 Premium will lower as soon as the PS3 price has dropped.

Plus, 12 mln. 360 users out there now, showing and telling their friends the stuff. 4.65 mln. PS3 users outthere that only can list those games that will be some time in the future but now... Only Oblivion AAA. The rest of the games are just average. That's how it works.

I'm playin' my PS3 much more than i ever played my 360.

It's a matter of taste but for me, the PS3 is the better choice because i like the games for it much more.

If i still had a 360 i really don't know what i would be playing. Halo 3 had a dissapointing single player campaign and i won't pay money to play online.

My PS3 runs all the time when i'm home. There are so many great games that never get boring. for example Motorstorm and Warhawk - these games never get old.

Heavenly Sword and Lair to follow. For me, there's no game for the 360 that kicks bvtt like these two. 101% epic battles with movie like graphics - what do you want more? ah, i know, another FPS ... lol

My Choice Is PS3 Because I Think The Games Are Much Better .. please stop trying to convince us Sony fans. It's not the 3fixme we don't like .. it's the games for that system.

I think not. No matter what PS3 sales are in NA a week, the combined ps2 and PS3 sales have averaged 80k to 100k every week in North America all year. This is too many new customers for Sony home consoles to be concerned. The gamecube is just like the wii with software; mostly all nintendo first party, the same old game franchises and no good third party franchises to brag about. The wii better get its act together on the games front because the PS3 has the heat. The gamecube did not have GTA III, Vice, or San Andreas. Shouldn't the wii have at least GTA IV? I mean shouldn't the wii have the new Final Fantasy? Those are just some of many third party titles that gamers love, but Nintendo doesn't even care too have. The gamecube almost did not even try to make better games. Sony has a better first xmas this year (15 exclusives this fall) than Nintendo had in 5 years. Has anyone noticed that Sony has sold 5 million consoles with all new ip's. The wii had zelda, mario (party & paper), pokemon, wii degree, and metroid. hmmmmmmm, Sony had resistance, motorstorm, warhawk, lair and heavenly sword as of now with more new ip's to come this xmas. The only familiar franchises this fall is Ratchet & Clank and Singstar. After Super mario galaxy, super smash, and wii fit they will be hard pressed to make their software not look just like gamecube. Sony has so much to be proud of: giving their fans a totally different machine, giving fans brand new franchises to play first,introducing a new disk based format for movies, software and games to the world and cutting costs fast for consumer morale. How much did Gamecube cost at launch and how much did PS3 cost? And what kind of technology did Gamecube have compared to PS3? When PS3's price comes down and Blu-ray becomes the new standard, there will be a great turn of events.

ok, but i think they are forgetting one thing. the gamecube sucked ass and had hardly any good games. People bought it thinking it would be like a next gen n64, but all it got was crap. yes i had one.Thankfully i also had a ps2.Thats what worries me about the wii too. but it is just a figure of which cannot really bring upon a comparison of sales between a PS3 and gamecube. Remember when GC came out it was around 125-150, maybe even less depending on where u got it. So it makes perfect sense to why GC is slightly above PS3 in current sales trends. You could buy three 2001 priced GC compared to only one PS3. Don't get me wrong though $150 six years ago was still more than today value isn't linear. So I guess my next counter would be then why did PS2 sell so many in it's first year. Well all I can say is market trends favor traditionalism. Playstation already had its name in the console arena so it is logical for many gamers to believe that $300 on launch day is a reasonable price for a great system, especially with all the hype.

I guess really what I'm saying is numbers are just numbers they don't tell you the whole story and I think many people try to justify too many actualities with numbers. I'm really quite curious to see what happens in the next 6 months, because there is a lot coming out that may sway some people in one direction and others into another.

Weeks after weeks, Gamecube sales are still showing up in NPD. If it still sell today (ok, only a few, but still showing up in charts), what term should we apply to the original Xbox. EXTREME FAILURE? Nintendo made money with the Gamecube (and are still making money) while the xbox was sold at a lost...

As far as I'm concerned, neither the Gamecube, nor the xbox, or even the PS3 are failures. Pricepoint plays a huge role in console sales. The PS3 will always be the most expensive if Microsoft and Nintendo play there cards right. Do you honestly think for one second that Microsoft would ever let the PS3 be "less" expensive than the 360??

Did gamepro even factor in the price of both when both debuted, wasnt GC alot cheaper than PS3? Im pretty sure if PS3 came out at the same price point as PS2 it would be past 2million in America by now, because right now its almost pushing 2million and at 499 at most of the time 599, so imagine what it would have done at 299.

If a $600 system sells like GC. Now the price just needs to come down and the competition will be slaughtered.

All earn money through advertisements. With that said, having higher subscriptions and hits per website you can bet that more advertising dollars are coming in. What better way to get those hits and subscriptions than to bash the little guy and appease the majority at that present time? It's no different here. Rags rely on the shock and awe factor from their readers and when they report stuff like this it makes people read. The more readers the more hits. The more hits the more advertising power and more income. This article is just a step in the direction of advertising jock sucking and shows little promise. ...the last console generation has not concluded yet. I'm still playing ps2 games on my ps3. not because there aren't any good games out yet, but because my favorite franchises haven't made the jump to the newer systems. microsoft released thier biggest title they will ever have. halo is a proven gem of a franchise and deserves the praises and marks it gets. but don't underestimate the competeion. other more time tested franchises are getting ready to make that jump. super smash brothers and ratchet and clank are gearing up to come into the next generation as we speak. there is a reason Sony and Nintendo fans are "waiting". it happens every generation. i remember waiting an entire console generation for metroid to make the jump, so waiting until 2008 to play the next final fantasy is a normal thing. i don't know exactly how the numbers are gonna change when these huge franchises start coining in (metal gear, final fantasy, super Mario, super smash brothers, ratchet and clank, etc.) but i do know this: things are going to get interesting...

It is obvious Sony has made many mistakes this generation but there is absolutely no way anyone can compare a PS3 to a 3DO or a Gamecube! Even counting the PS1 and PS2 games that won't work on it the PS3 has the largest available library of games of any system ever created. Sony will not allow the PS3 to be third or second. 3DO had no legacy, Gamecube did but decided on a useless format and came into the game really far behind. Wii and 360 are very good systems and it's going to be a longer time before Sony can pull even. I think they will and eventually pull ahead worldwide in 2009.

But the game cube was cheap as hell and only sold that much plus these are only North American Figures the PS3 is doing good in other places.I know a lot of people who want a PS3 but are waiting for a price drop.With a price drop the PS3 will do okay this holiday season.I'm NOT saying it will do better than other consoles but I think it could at least match the North American sales by spring 08.Between now and spring 08 theres a lot of good games coming out.

At the current rate the 360 will sell about as many units as the original xbox. 360 at 2 years = 12 million. 4 years = 24 milion. Original xbox 24 million over 4 years. What Idiotpro forgot to mention is that Sony sold 80% of their ps2s at $199 or less. The Gamecube started at $199.

MGS4 and Grand turismo will be excellent games (i base my predictions on past reputations of the developers),but as 4 Killzone i advise you to approach with curtion.They said the same thing about the original version and that was crap.D graphics are truly breathtaking but good graphics is not the alpha an omega of gaming.

I was shocked to see the sales figures for the GameCube recently. It really had so much going for it. Although the hardware wasn't as good as the Xbox, it was way better than the Playstation 2. It also had Nintendo's first party franchises in addition to Resident Evil (as an Exclusive) for a period. But I guess that someone has to come in Third.

Well in all fairness it could sell less than the Game Cube. And I could get laid by Jessica Biel, though neither seems very likely...Unfortunately. :*(

Xbox never got japan and this is the big downer for the 360 on hitting the what the PS2 did. everyone goes on about halo 3 but xbox had halo 1 and 2 and failed.

Right now it will be selling less but as soon as KZ2, MGS4, Eight Days, Soul Caliber 4, Ratchet & Clank Future, Time Crisis 4, etc.

But it didn't have HD or the ability to play an HD movie format, either. If it did, PS3 would be well below the GC right now. You can't argue different characteristics. If the PS3 was purple and had no HD, where would it stand? Now you see why price is a stupid argument.

That happens with everything. GC didn't stay at its price at release, either, though, I must say, it may be saying something about the PS3 selling less even after a drastic $100 price drop. I'm not sure when the GC got its first price drop...though there is a spike on the graph for each, which, I assume, are price drops, so they're more or less even in that regard.

Nintendo gives must have games, too. Heck, Melee, Mario Sunshine, 2 Metriod Primes, and many many more.

The bottom line is that they can be compared. The only differance you should be looking at is how many gamers there are now compared to 2001-2002. There are more gamers now than there were then, so any comparison we do, we should say, in our minds, that in 2001-2002, the numbers for now would be slightly lower.

GamePro's dumb. First, GameCube quickly fell before PS2 while PS3 has just started gaining momentum. Also, a Sony platform is always slow until first MGS and FF arrive. With PSone it was with MGS1 and FFVII, with PS2 it was MGS2 and FFX...

try comparing diff. systems from other hardware generations is a waste of time.

The Wii is a novelty toy for babys and housewives. Babys and housewives get bored with new toys quickly, so the Wii won't be able to give away any software in about a year. The Wii is as good as finished.
When Sony announces on October 12 that there is a $400 PS3 SKU, a timed exclusive release of GTA4 in october, the new release date of MGS4 in december, the announcement of the FFVII remake, and the $100 PS2 with motion controller, PS3 sales and sony stock will skyrocket.
When blu-ray disc wins the high-def wars, which it will, the PS3 will sell even more.
Sony will win within 2 years. No question. Halo 3 can only carry MS so far.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
