‘Retail needed to push PC games’

Midnight openings and in-store incentives instrumental in MMO success, says NCsoft.

The rise in digital distribution won’t bring an end to PC games retail – it will just change its function, according to NCsoft.

The MMO publisher – whose titles include City of Heroes, Aion, Lineage and the upcoming Guild Wars 2 – claims bricks-and-mortar stores will always serve a purpose when releasing games on PC, even if it isn’t necessarily to drive the bulk of a game’s sales.

Most retailers just promote XBOX 360 and the Wii which is not a bad thing. Most PC gamers just download games from Steam just because of value for money compared to retailers.

Same price in most cases. Not really saving anything. I buy through Steam mostly because I do not really have a choice in the matter. Local Gamestop caries very few PC games and some of them that I have gotten are just discs for downloading Steam and getting the game.

Heh, steam prices are half the retail price in Aus :)

I don't know what NCsoft is smoking but it'll take titles like sc2, diablo 3, Half Life 3 to get midnight launches from the pc sector.

Even then I'll just go through steam or blizzards store.

i love NC Soft games. It is weird how retailers do push 360 and wii but i dont rarely see PC games or ps3 games as much. Like in most of my gamestops the PC section is like the sad neglected cousin all baron and no adverts.

like they assume all PC gamers know what there gonna buy so why advertise.

I download everything through Steam except Blizzard games..just easier and less hassle.

imvix5551d ago

Yep havent been to a retail store in 3-4 years, thats ever since Steam happened.

LunaticBrandon5551d ago

No thanks. Retail is the reason content is stripped from games and given only to certain retailers to drive sales at that specific place.

Guess you didnt notice the Rift deals on Steam?

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

But all of the great games have been made by humans

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
