Why Red Dead... Works

Gamasutra: Out of the entire catalogue of 2010, it feels as if no game has received as much attention, as many accolades or as few gripes as Red Dead Redemption.

That isn't to say that there weren't any other amazing games released last year -- I'm looking at you, Mass Effect 2 -- but only to imply that somehow Red Dead Redemption has managed to avoid the variety of pitfalls that have befallen others. It wasn't critically or commercially snubbed despite its fair share of flaws.

The fact of the matter is that Red Dead Redemption, despite being a Western, having immersion-breaking bugs and including a second act that most folks didn't care for, resonates with more of the general public than any of the other offerings this year.

As a vehicle for an experience, it pushes the right buttons in a way that goes beyond mere entertainment.

Its a great sand box argubly the best but entertainment is all it is.

BiggCMan5570d ago

I didn't like it a whole lot, shoot me. I don't think it deserved all the praise it received.

Oldsnake0075570d ago

1 man who didn't enjoy it is nothing in front of millions of people who did.

bumnut5570d ago

I know plenty of people who didn't enjoy it, myself included. I also know plenty of people who did.

It was just GTA with horses, it didn't offer anything new except a different environment (which was empty compared to the city setting of GTA)

I agree with BiggCMan see my statement below.

I'm probably the only person that disliked this game. The voice acting was great, the graphics were beautiful however some of the missions were boring like the Di Santos shotgun/stagecoach riding. John Marston felt a bit like Niko Bellic (yeah John was an outlaw before) with the whole 'I hate you but I have to do your dirty work to get what I want' attitude. I hated the blue marked people especially the women that had a gang right behind her and shot you down for no reason.

I also remember how the online was hyped up to be the best thing since sliced bread. The hideouts in SP and MP were very fun at the start but became boring. The hunting was good and so was being the public enemy. I also hated the fact that it made my PS3 sound like it's going to explode with the disc drive and fans going berserk.

It felt like an errand boy game. The story felt really dull/slow in some parts but the online multiplayer was outrageously overrated.

It was a good game, but a bit overrated.

NYC_Gamer5570d ago

this game is based off sergio leone movies

Why it works? It's GTA located in the old west! And it had a true Rockstar storyline.

More like people don't play these type of games on their phone normally and don't try them out. Not like the places where people do play these games haven't crushed those numbers easily.

How many people actually played more than an hour of the game or came close to finishing it on mobile is the real question. If people aren't playing the games to a point that is purposeful, then why try when a subscription that is behind a streaming service isn't a sign of success but just curiosity.

What if Netflix becomes ‘the Netflix of gaming?!’

Alek83144d ago

I downloaded it because I already have a Netflix sub.
I am not going to buy it for $40 or whatever it costs on Google Play.

I tried it out and will be sticking to the PC version, but it's not bad.

Having said that, this is the issues I see vs the PC version:
1. Greatly reduced texture resolution.
2. Massive downgrade ALL lighting quality (this includes water, shadows, etc).
3. Stutter and heat. Prolonged play leads to both.
On the plus side, we have:
4. This thing is like 6GB vs the 12 on Steam.

Great way to try the game, but not the best way to play it.

Perhaps Netflix will make a RDR series now that ST is done with.

Lionsguard145d ago

A Netflix version of RDR?... Oh boy... I can't wait... /s

TheColbertinator145d ago

They should build a production that includes members behind the True Grit remake and Hell on Wheels from AMC. Both were perfect for wild west vibes.

but i doubt people ACTUALLY played it on smartphone vs tried it out.

Another free update...good to know but I don't own a series X

Petebloodyonion178d ago

I’m not sure what the exact issue is. I had no trouble getting the free update—you basically get the new game for free if you have the 360 version in your digital library. Maybe the problem is related to owning or not owning the Undead DLC expansion.

Hypertension140178d ago (Edited 178d ago )

Yea I think thats what it is. I also own the game but not the expansion, and im unable to download the update.
