GQ | The New Xbox 360 Controller

GQ's opinion on the new Xbox 360 controller with the transforming D-pad.

vrylstminute5547d ago

Are M$ going to swap these for the default console controllers? This new controller is cool and all, but there will be a steeper learning curve for new gamers since the association of keys to game actions are created by the perception of colors.

Would be keen to see a study of effective actions per minute (in a range of games) by newcomers using each controller - I think you will find the colors work better in that case.

granthinds5547d ago

Ye, that will be the biggest hurdle that this product will create.

No Way5547d ago

Do you own a PS3? Just curious, as to if the colors there help you?
I know each of the 4buttons on the PS3 controller have colors..
But, honestly, I couldn't tell you the colors, just the 'shapes.'
While on the PS3, I don't go by colors. I just know the buttons.

vrylstminute5547d ago

I do not own a PS3 but I do own an XBOX 360 (which I acquired very recently). So it is from experience, as a n00b, that I can make this observation.

No Way5547d ago (Edited 5547d ago )

I'm not pickin or nothin, just curious was all.
I'm curious to anyone that owns a PS3, as well..
And, I hear ya. When I first started playin, I associated with colors, too.
But, now that I've been playin on the xBox 360 for quite some time, now..
The colors are just there to look pretty, lol, I don't much need em anymore.

So they finally copied the Sony Controller :P

granthinds5547d ago

What you mean they copied the PS3 controller?! The PS3 has a transforming Dpad?!

ianfelmore5547d ago

It's that new secret one that only a select few know about. Sorry you didn't make the cut G! Hah! But I still cannot get over the grey buttons... I don't know about MS but I see in colour.

No Way5547d ago

I actually prefer the greyed out colors, I know the buttons, so..
Them not having colors doesn't bother me one bit, not the slightest.
But, I already have enough controllers, I don't think I need another.

guigsy5547d ago (Edited 5547d ago )

What in the same way Sony copied the SNES controller?

It's just a D-pad, industry standard design.

bozebo5547d ago (Edited 5547d ago )

yeah lol everybody copied nintendo, and nintendo moved away from that design that they invented :P lol it's funny how it turned out.

the 360 controller is really great though - the way it sits in your hands. for some reason though, every 360 controller I have owned has had a loose battery pack/connector, I have to stuff a little bit of folded paper in to keep it from cutting out randomly :@ - and I mean from day 1, not after dropping them or anything

Another thing, the damn analogue sticks always hang to a direction on every 360 controller I have owned on day 1.

ps3 controllers have annoying triggers (what were sony thinking really? they could be so much better) and the handles are kind of small-ish (but they want to follow their tradition which makes sense), but I have never had a hanging analogue stick on a sony controller and their battery/charging system is far more sensible and doesn't force you to buy extra crap. Also, the button action feels a little nicer on sony controllers.

basically, 360 = better design, sony = better manufacturing
sony have their reasons for sticking to their design though, but I hope they do something about those triggers

as far as I am concerned the other console which shall not be named has no controller []_[]

Awesome controller. The 360 controller is now my favourite, just ahead of the Dreamcast's.

The d-pad on the original was absolutely terrible, and I'm glad its been fixed.

granthinds5547d ago

The 360 controller has always been the best! :) Despite the Dpad!

waltyftm5547d ago

PS2/PS3 pad is my favourite, The original Xbox Slim pad is a close second.

guigsy5547d ago

The 360 controller is without doubt the most comfortable controller I've ever used.

kelvinmanley5547d ago

they must just start making controllers cheaper. all these dudes cane our wallets with their new controllers.

granthinds5547d ago

True, in order for us to adopt this properly, they need to make it more affordable.

WhiteNoise5547d ago

I like the look of the Razer Onza better.

Hard to tell which has the better d-pad though. the 360 control shape is good but the buttons were clunky and sometimes they didn't seem very responsive. I think that's where the onza would have the edge, better components/response time.

shaun mcwayne5547d ago

yep i think ill get the onza too, im guessing ms are releasing this before they allow razer to release the onza.

bozebo5547d ago

lol response time :P

the game's update rate (probably 30/second) will make the controller response time a complete non-factor.
but yeah, the component quality does count in many other subtle ways - but not the response time

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde22d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy23d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
