PS3 Hacker Mathieulh Finds PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.56 Exploit

Today PS3 hacker Mathieulh reports finding a PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.56 exploit, although he states he has no plans to give any further details about it.

To quote from PSX-Scene: Well-known hacker Mathieu Hervais has reportedly found a bug that allows exploiting metldr, the bootloader and firmware version 3.56.

Send him some free stuff and a congratulatory pat on the back with a shirt that says

"I was the first to jailbreak PS3 Firmware 3.56, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Wenis5560d ago

But they've still yet to 'finish' Geohot.

PlayerX5560d ago

Lol only on n4g do you see people defending corporations using bulling tactics and bogus lawsuits to scare people into not hacking their product. I am no fan of piracy, but this is just sad. If any other company did this n4g would be ripping them apart.

evrfighter5560d ago

ya it's not everyday you see the little people ready to take up arms for the mega conglomerates.

These are truly troubling times we live in.

PirateThom5560d ago

I think you people fail to see the impact hacking has on the community. Apart from the fact no one is stopping people hacking their own consoles and Sony are going after those that distribute the material to do it, those hacks and aimbots don't just happen to appear one day in games.

If you defend the hackers, you defend hacking, you defend cheating, you defend destroying online interactions.

Eamon5559d ago

Actually PirateThom, nothing is happening to the community.

Every other console has been hacked and has had little to nothing effect. Plain and simple.

"If you defend the hackers, you defend hacking, you defend cheating, you defend destroying online interactions."

^ You sound like the US government making propaganda about Iraq. "You're either with us or against us."

deafwing5559d ago

another one looking for online fame ... lame.
how about hacking the worlds problems guy?

DaTruth5559d ago (Edited 5559d ago )

Maybe they just owned a PSP? That's all it takes to appreciate the destructive effects of cracking! If it wasn't for Japan and Sony's commitment to supporting their hardware, we wouldn't have any good games on PSP now.

It's weird to see PC gamers who will soon be playing their consolized version of Crysis 2(DX9) defending cracking that leads to piracy. If it wasn't for piracy, you guys would be playing a real Crysis 2 by now.

And don't give me that, "teh Crysis sold 2 million" crap; how many of those were sold for 9.99 on Steam sales.

Soldierone5559d ago

LMAO have you not seen the PSP and PC problems? Developers are jumping ship on PC because they cant sell more than pirates are stealing.

Then Sony is getting threats from developers leaving the PSP because pirates have ruined that too.

Fact is defending theives and cheaters is a lot bigger of a stupid action than defending Sony. Which by the way is fighting on behalf of the entire industry, not just PS3. The only people mad at that are the theives themselves. So next time dont even bother saying "oh i dont like pirates or anything"

Pandamobile5559d ago

Uh, DaTruth, Crysis sold 3 million retail units.

MintBerryCrunch5559d ago

the guy says he wont reveal the exploit

so all of you who didnt bother to click the link, think before you ask for someones head on a stick

Eamon5559d ago

The reason why a lot of PC developers are jumping to consoles isn't due to piracy.

It's because to buy a gaming PC to play the games properly is more expensive than buying a console. These days most people get laptop computers which can't be upgraded CPU or Gfx wise.

Also, there is a much bigger market and audience on console than PC.

paintsville5559d ago

Lookout...."mandatory&quo t; firmware update coming in..alert...alert!!!

gamingdroid5559d ago (Edited 5559d ago )

I think what MS did with the ChevronWP7 hack was a good thing. They got it off the market, with no lawyers involved and the hackers got a compromise.

Win-win for everybody except for the greedy lawyers.

Sony should do the same instead of getting all this bad publicity and huge legal cost incurred.

@ a_bro

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the subpoena thing (Geohot's contacts). They probably are watching him as well as everyone who checks in on his twitter.

Edit: "although he states he has no plans to give any further details about it."

Wise move. Think he'll go to Sony with this for one "get outta lawsuit card" as well as a job offer if what he claims is legit? Or risk it?

elmaton985560d ago (Edited 5560d ago )

you know ive been hearing that when you buy something, its yours right? anyway, if you hacked anything and if you release it to the public then its illegal otherwise its not. this is what geodick would have done in the first place so if woulnt be in this mess( if i was him, i would be enjoying all those free games) great move from him not to release the exploit BTW.

bub165560d ago

elmaton98

there would be no "free" games if the hacks hadnt come out...

Look_Behind5559d ago

LOL I was running homebrew on my PS3 before geohot came onto the scene. 3.41 jailbreak ftw. At least that jailbreak took a bit of effort.

Soldierone5559d ago

The funny thing is there probably are hackers that had broken the PS3 and were getting free games but staying quiet about it. Then Geodick probably ruined it by alerting Sony and now none of them are able to go online haha.

Thugbot1875560d ago

It's not like the guy released the hack. He said look you guys got a bug its not full proof. All we can see with this whole thing is the original bug can't really be patched.

darksied5559d ago

Now this is my kind of hacker. Says he has a hack, but doesn't release it to the public. Good job, now keep it that way. The minute he releases any information about this hack online, I'm all for Sony busting down his door and throwing his ass in jail. Until then ... nice coding skills, I guess?

Christopher5559d ago (Edited 5559d ago )

Not to be rude... but with the metldr known by all, isn't this going to be the standard news with every single FW upgrade? I mean, there is absolutely no way Sony can now prevent hackers from creating CFW. What they want to stop is the open distribution of their modified IP.

AKA5559d ago

im glad that not everyone is a everyday sheep like you.

people wake up, read or wach some malcolm x history and few others like the yippies and etc
stop been a sheep.

on topic its very clear that anything is hack-able and im just glad that poor people are going to enjoy good games and have a better day.

darksied5559d ago

"im just glad that poor people are going to enjoy good games and have a better day."

Ah, so your argument is that poor people should be able to pirate games? Unless I misunderstood what you were saying, then let me argue this point. So a "poor person," as you put it, can pirate games. How did they afford that ps3 or 360 they're playing on, which costs more than a few games? What about a car, shouldn't poor people be able to enjoy a nice and expensive car to enjoy themselves and have a better day? They're poor, who cares if they steal it, right?

A video game system is NOT a necessity to live, it's almost a luxury item. A cell phone is actually more important to every day life nowadays, and a video game system is not even close. There's a lot of poor people out there, and I'm even on the border of that, but the last thing a person with low income should be doing is having "a better day" by playing video games when they have more important things to do.

Sorry for the rant, but that argument is one that is brought up often, but it's terrible. Life, libery, etc. are guaranteed to a person, not having fun playing video games.

AKA5559d ago

in Venezuela a brand new games for it first few weeks cost more then the console, im not going to give you 100 more examples.
try going out from your pretty life and you may understand that life is not only what you know or the hollywood movies tells you.

you enjoy your game and let them njoy the games have fun and let others have fun, games sale well and the workers get paid, nobody gets hurt or have got hurt, yeah maybe SONY is mad that pirates dont need to buy a blu ray burner or blank dics and that ks why they are mad, because everything is digital and they cant profit from it.

Kos-Mos5559d ago

You never know ;) -They put up forum posts as "evidence" against geohot. They donated a $1 to geohot's paypal account to try and prove he was accepting donations when he proved that he wasn't. They drag him from New Jersey to try and break him by means of attrition. They stage a police raid on graf_chokolo's house. They send out numerous DMCA Takedown notices to github, google, and sourgeforge. They tried to subpoena the IPs of all the computers that viewed geohot's videos. They tried to appeal to the CA Judge to remove all traces of the hack from the internetLOL!). They sued LG to try and stall smartphone sales against their Xperia brand.

Sony is capable of any kind of shenanigans at this point bro. Why I wouldn't be surprised if Sony had spybots in our PS3 monitoring us and whatever we do in case we do something naughty.

OH WAIT.

*googles PS3 3.56 Rootkit and new PSN ToS*

beavis4play5560d ago

why do you act like such an @ss?

gamingdroid5560d ago (Edited 5560d ago )

kneon5560d ago

@beavis4play

Maybe he's not acting :)

lee_ten5560d ago

...why don't you do something constructive with your life instead of trolling a gaming site?

DaTruth5559d ago (Edited 5559d ago )

Obviously, Sony's intention is to make it too much trouble to bother cracking their software and distributing cracks, all for just a little notoriety and a couple of donation bucks you couldn't possibly make a living on.

This guy would probably be distributing this now, if it weren't far too much trouble and risk!

If you invested billions of dollars into something and had a team of lawyers on your payroll, wouldn't you do anything to protect your investment, including using said lawyers since your paying them anyways?

To protect billions of dollars, some corporations actually kill people and spend millions paying off politicians!

Sue him for what? For *claiming* to have found an exploit?

rrw5559d ago

at least he shut up and not releasing the exploit

ziggurcat5560d ago

nothing will happen if he keeps it to himself.

he could do the honourable thing and inform sony, in private, of the exploit.

ziggurcat5559d ago

not sure where the disagreement with above statement is about.

unless you disagree that he should do the right thing and inform sony so they can fix the alleged exploit?

Godmars2905560d ago

Sounds like he's too scared/smart to generally release the information.

Which is probably what Sony meant to achieve with the Geohot suit.

bub165560d ago

hes dropping the hint to give other hackers somewhere to look and release the info

Godmars2905560d ago

So he's just showing he's not a glory hound like Geohot.

radphil5560d ago (Edited 5560d ago )

"So he's just showing he's not a glory hound like Geohot."

If he really did find an exploit, it's a smart move tbh. Loud barking from the other names brings unwanted attention.

morganfell5560d ago

But if mathieulh wasn't a glory hound we would never have known of his actions...or his name. But he is what he is.

You can be sure that if he shares this quietly with someone and it leaks out it will get traced back to him. Then he is screwed. His ego just wouldn't let him keep his mouth shut.

Eamon5559d ago (Edited 5559d ago )

As far as I can see, the only significance of his message is to motivate other hackers to find the exploit that he has found (if he did).

I don't think he wants the responsibility and lawsuits etc but it's true that his ego makes him want to have credit for being first even if someone else releases info about this exploit.

radphil5559d ago

"I don't think he wants the responsibility and lawsuits etc but it's true that his ego makes him want to have credit for being first even if someone else releases info about this exploit."

That's generally how some hackers act. They want to be known that they were one of the first to find a situation, but don't want to glorify themselves to the masses.

MiloGarret5559d ago

The average age of commentators on this site must be under 12. Seriously, it's messed up how people are willing to support this gazillion-dollar corporation that cares only about their wallets. It's fucking insane.

I hope the ps3 gets hacked to shreds, that it becomes the most pirated console in the history of consoles. Not because I dislike Sony, or the ps3, oh no. Simply because I want to see tools like Pirate Tom and the rest of the retards on this site cry, cry like babies.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199234d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga34d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box35d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion34d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7235d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7534d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit34d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14935d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7735d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
