David Cage's Messiah Complex

David Cage has become the James Cameron of video games. Both nurture a cult-of-personality comparable to the religious devotion of Apple fanboys. Cage and Cameron are defined by their pretensions. But Cameron’s street cred at least partially justifies his messiah complex. Cage’s resume falls well short of his ego.

Galvanise_5478d ago

Very harsh article. Everyone who wants to try something different or change an established system is always mocked. I say good luck to the guy for trying to make games that appeal to a more emotionally mature audience. The industry needs more people like David Cage.

thekiddfran5478d ago

I totally agree mate. This article is a sham.

NukaCola5478d ago

David Cage wants to make a new type of interactive experience which derives from the adventure titles of yore. Article is crap.

@Neckbear
^^^Just ignore him. He contributes nothing to N4G but biased immature remarks. Go away neckbear.

PrimordialSoupBase5478d ago

And he can do what he wants. He should. However, to claim that game mechanics are "evil" and that his game design is the only one with any legitimacy, any worth pursuing, is plain retarded.

Neckbear5478d ago (Edited 5478d ago )

Thing is, what he's doing is nor innovatine nor new. In fact, what he does...he does it wrong, forgive me if I'm being too harsh, but it's the truth.

We've always had point-and-click adventures and stories, bro.

Have you ever played, say, Grim Fandango or The Longest Journey? Once you do, you'll really be aware of how...BAD Heavy Rain was, for example. Hell, you don't have to take gameplay away to actually make good stories, unlike what this man thinks; Iji and Another World are brilliant examples of how to make videogame mechanics evolve along the story itself.

And that's why I agree with this article. The man thinks he's the next Messiah, the next big thing of videogames, yet there have been games since long, long ago that have done what he does, and have done it better. His games are NOT innovative, and hell, aren't even GOOD at what they do.

...And by last, I find it funny that Sony publishes his games, considering they, according to rumors, have the attitude of "HURR VISUAL NOVELS ARE NOT VIDEOGAMES".

@Baka-akaB

He's been touted as innovative, and he himself thinks that what he does is unique. It is not.

Moreover, that's the kind of view you get from him when he treats his perspectives as an absolute fact, at least regarding himself. However, yes, I kind of forgot that he himself worked on other Point-and-click adventures.

But ah, well.

Oh, and about VNs, I believe that, even when the market is small, there IS a market out there. Otherwise, companies like Jast USA or Mangagamer wouldn't be alive, me thinks.

Although, yeah, Heavy Rain is basically a bad visual/graphical novel with some high budget to back it up.

@NukaCola

Thanks for disregarding my opinions in such ways, bro. Whatever helps ya sleep at night, I guess, though that's a fairly cliché line.

Baka-akaB5478d ago (Edited 5478d ago )

it doesnt matter if what he does is indeed innovative or not .

He never refered himself , at least not so far , as the next best thing , messiah or whatever .

He has his vision and ideal about what he want from games , wich he in invested in that's all .

I'm fairly sure that if you talk to him about pc about pc adventure games , he'd happily give them their due . You conveniently forget he is part of that same pc world , with the exception of one game , due to fundings .

Again that article is just an insult to ,already for starters , Cameron that came out of the blue , and rather gratuiteous .

EDIT : "according to rumors"

We already know why Sony and most others wouldnt bother with visuals novels . The western market for it is too small . If think they are wrong , but its their call . it was the same crap with many 2d japanese games .

Should they care more anyway ? It get released and sells plenty in the market that care the most : japan .

Even if HR was indeed just a visual novel , well its one with a blockbuster budget that could sell and well it did .

Not to mention that Sony have already published a shitload of odd titles with or without success through their history , just to build a decent portfolio , asides from the usual mainstream stuff .

It in contrary seems to be a right fit for a publisher otherwise 80% of the time releasing mainstream money makers

nix5478d ago

woah woah woah.. i've never heard him say he is a messiah or saviour. whatever helps u sleep too.

Redempteur5478d ago (Edited 5478d ago )

"Have you ever played, say, Grim Fandango or The Longest Journey? "

i have and i don't see how Heavy rain is bad.

Those two games have flaws like heavy rain but they aren't even in the same category .

Heavy rain tries to make you see the influences of your actions on a straight path while for example grim fandango (or others like gabriel kinght, or monkey island ) have a set story and your only task is too find how to progress.

Second, "The man thinks he's the next Messiah, the next big thing of videogames".
he never said that . And last time i checked i didn't see cage running off like an attention whore saying anything for fame like others ( example : molyneux )

"I find it funny that Sony publishes his games, considering they, according to rumors, have the attitude of "HURR VISUAL NOVELS ARE NOT VIDEOGAMES". "

There are 34 visual novels on PS3 , 293 on PS2 and 62 on psp . the numbers are against you .( that's my personnal count , i 'm pretty sure i missed some )

Not sony fault if there isn't a huge market for visual novels on the west in america or europe.
if you're really a fan of visual novels ( like me ) then play them in japanese .

"Otherwise, companies like Jast USA or Mangagamer wouldn't be alive"
And what prevent them from releasing VNS on consoles ? that's right they aren't big enough. or teh cost are too high.. See how mangagamer handled Koihime musou on PC ... NO VOICES , DELAYS , and the script isn't even perfect and of course no physical disc BECAUSE this would have cost too much .. thos companies are living by release games no ones cares while leaving the ones driving the genre forward untouched because they can't handle the work needed to do a proper job ..
WHAT a good example you've picked. /s

BrutallyBlunt5478d ago

I actually feel Hideo Kojima is much worse as far as personalities go and how they come across to others during interviews. Both make games that are their own though that have their own style and try and do things differently.

HolyOrangeCows5478d ago

Molyneux, Kojima, Cliffy?

They're far worse than Cage. Cage is just trying to bring more mature material with more emotion, trying to forget the traditional implied rules of games.

Aloren5478d ago

Well, I've seen a bunch of Cage interview, I've even seen him twice in Paris game shows, and he really has an ego problem. He doesn't just do different things (which is great), he also can't resist to diss the rest of the industry. Cage's problem is definitly not that he tries to bring something different, it's that he claims the rest is basically crap or toys for kids.

Cage tries to improve the quality of gaming narrative and so he's full of himself? Uh, no. Cage is not interested in promoting himself but cultivating storytelling. BIG FUCKING DIFFERENCE bitmob. Just because he's passionate doesn't mean he's got a god-complex.

You want to criticize devs with a messiah complex you're looking in the wrong place.

DigitalRaptor5478d ago

Completely true. Cage is passionate about his art and vision for video games as a more mature source of entertainment and storytelling.

In no way does he promote himself as some sort of superior person. Maybe he comes across like this in interviews, but he's just promoting his ideals to the industry and in his creations.

Terrible article.

Baka-akaB5478d ago

An article insulting to both Cameron and Cage , from a pretty useless site... yawn ...

M-Easy5478d ago

The site is probably the 2nd worst site behind Craptoku. They always try to sound deep and interesting but it comes out as stupid pointless.

Gamerfans5478d ago

Set aside all of your FPS action adventure that have no real style (COD) and play heavy rain or Indigo Prophecy and you will find out what a real genius Cage is.

-Gespenst-5478d ago

God Indigo Prophecy is such a heap of shit...

-Gespenst-5478d ago (Edited 5478d ago )

It starts off very well but it just devolves into the worst, most interminable sci-fi bollocks I've ever had to endure. Like the matrix mixed with conspiracy theories; two things absolutely done to death.

It just becomes so juvenile at the end.

EDIT: Also, why is it, that despite the metacritic score, I still don't like the game? "Opinion" is the answer.

Redempteur5478d ago

i agree indigo has a pretty bad final act but that doesn't change the fact that the parts leading to the end weretrilling and fun .

You can hate the game i don't care i LOVE IT

Heavy Rain was my favorite . Fahrenheit was great too

MadLad1200d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.
