I have both. There is really no comparison right now. MS hs been perfecting XBL for several years. XBL allows you to chat in game wit players on your team or someone else in another gme, watching movie. I can be playing Gears of War and wen people on my friend list log onto XBL I get a notification. I can from there send a invite immediately to that friend, chat and/or instant message tem, also I can view them through Xbox live vision. While I am playing this game and talking to a friend that that is playing completly game, I can send messages (voice or text) messages to other people. I can compare games of plyer in my party instantly to see if I want to add tem to my friends list, I can choose to avoid or prefer this player. I can choose to choose music to listen too while gaming inline, check my active downloads, These are just a few features of XBL not including others like downloading demos, Newly released movies, tv series, older movies, music, downloading gamer themes/avatars, and more. I definately get my moneys worth.

Do not get me wrong, I think the PSN will geet much better and i hope so too. It's relatively new, so give it some time to get better. Home will add a "Sim" style feel to it.

I've been on Xbox Live! for a year and 6 months now. Having a great interface helps a ton. I've gotten used to all of the different features. It's major plus is that it's just plain refined, and as time passes it will continue to deliver consistent results. Nothing felt greater than loading it up the first time and experiencing the wholeness of the Live! gaming community. Video games were for the longest time just about playing against people with multitap or splitscreen/system link. Dreamcast was the first major success, hampered only by its network conditions. Xbox carried on that tradition, and the 360 leads the pack today.

Live has got:

required integration into game development process
easy access to many features
premium feel and polish throughout design
support for Live! Messenger service
very responsive interface, very intuitive control

Lets compare PC with XBL

psn is better. its free and it is not a lag fest like xbox live. and it gets better with update 2.0.

I think eventually the two are going to be just as good as each other. What i mean is they will both in the end have the same features, but with a different layout.

Both PSN and Xbox Live are good services. But I have to say LIVE wins this one ATM. Microsoft has a lot more experience, so its only natural for their service to be somewhat better. But the margin is slight if you ask me.

The PSN is something new to Sony. Yes they have had online with the PS2 but nothing to this extent. Given time and a bit of patience, I foresee the PSN being Lives biggest competitor and actually giving it a run for it's money... And on that note... You pay for Live, you pay nothing for the PSN. Does that need any more explaining? Give it time, and after a while the true comparison will come.

I don't see why everyone hates the PSN. I think it is coming along nicely since its first release in 2006 users have much more features. Its not even one year old just yet. Live is about 6 or 7 years old so Microsoft already has what it needs in there. Playstation Network will be complete by the end of 2008 with the release of Home and the release of a firmware update to include in game messaging and other things like Xbx Live.

What people need to understand is that the PSN will grow in time, I say give it another year or so and you will see a ton of changes. I believe SONY will add movies and music for download sometime next year(early or late next year), plus with HOME coming out it's just going to get better with time. Yes I have a 360 and XBL, and it is great but it took MS along time to establish it's self to get it where XBL is right now and the same will be said for SONY.

Lucky for MS they started XBL on the original XBOX and it grew from there and that is why XBL is great right now and will continue to grow, SONY should have taken the same steps with the PS2 but I believe the reason why they didn't is because the PS2 hardware just didn't cut it. But SONY is doing their best to improve the PSN and will continue to do so until it's where they want the service to be at, in the mean time people should just wait and give it another year before they start to compare the two services.

personally i like the xbl better than psn but i have to admit that the home feature seems intresting.. but i doubt that with the home feature sonys gona b able to pick up the lead in this online battle... sure sony has free live stuff and all but that is kinda crappy.. where as with the xbl even if ur playing u know its worth it , the xbox has got pletny of AAA multiplayer online games whereas ps3 just has warhawk(for now) and that too isnt a AAA tye game... so i think that xbl is better . and now im gona get disagrreed by evry sony fanboi visiting this artical....

The guy is not comparing online play he is comparing the functionality of Marketplace to PSN. to compare XBL that came out in 2002 to PSN that came out last year. Come on, Obviously Xbl is going to be better, it's 5 years old people. PSN will always be free. its a selling point for the console. they can sell music games movies, and downloadable content, but still keep it free. the money made from selling stuff would pay for running servers for games to play on.

Xbox Live is killer, there is so much to do with game demos and arcade games etc coming out regular.

Xbl does have lag but its features make up for it. And what you do is start befriending hosts with good internet connections so you can always enterr into one of their games, basically lag free, minus some people playing in the game.

Hopefully update 2.00 for psn is coming soon.

More content can be found on the service and it seems more "complete" than PSN.

I did not read b/c its a blog. Seriously, what do we hope to accomplish by fighting over two different consoles? No one is going to agree that one is better than the other unless one of them have a major collapse. Let's just play whatever we have and enjoy. I like the PSN interface much more than the XBL interface.It serves well for what I need. I also love that the PS3 has a browser. I can go online to my favorite video site and stream my weekly episodes of Naruto or almost any TV show I want. If it's online 80% of the time I can watch it. That's a lot better to me.

Of course Live is better than PSN right now. They're not planning to completely overhaul PSN because they're going to release Home. Any big improvements to the PSN interface right now would be a complete waste of energy and time since Home is the ultimate upgrade they're planning.

Edit - I should say of course Live has the better interface. Whether it's better quality is highly debatable.

Well when you have over 7 million people on live compared to 2 million on PSN you will definitely run into more lag wait until that number grows than we will see how much lag is on PSN. I also find it funny that all PS3 people say that there is no lag on PS3 when Gamespot was playing the game on ON The Spot I saw lag and the guy commented on it that it was the first time he had experienced lag while playing. The Fact is online there will always be some form of lag nothing is lag free.

They're so biased towards XBOX. PSN has been out less than a year when XBL has been out for almost five years. That changes the whole perspective but they "chose" not to put that in there. I bet M$ paid them to do this article like how they paid R* $50 million for exclusive content in GTA and Bioshock to be exclusive.

I own both systems and yes xboxlive store is better than PSN store for now. It really does feel more complete. But i am also a Home beta tester and trust me xbox aint got nothing nothing on Sony when it releases this incredible full 3d interace. Arcade centers where you can simply walk up to any machine and play the games. Right now since the update we can go outside to the sitting area and just simply sit down and even play chess with anyone. This interface makes PC second life interface look like crap. I am really serious no bias. I really cannot believe how powerful the PS3 system and its network is. But hey thats what you get when you use Unix based software and its network capabilities.

I think both services are just fine. And honestly I dont think anyone on this site is going to be swayed into thinking one is better than the other off the article or the fanboy rage.

I will say this. I do grow tired of all the Sony Fanboys who throw out the but xbox live has been around longer than psn so it has a head start. Fact of the matter is Sony started up their version of psn back on the PS2 with Socom and Killzone...couple other online titles too. Sony just did a half a$$ed job back then of slapping something together to make an online service. They could have chosen to develop and invest more resources to really flesh out a great online service for the PS3 from the get go. They knew the PS3 would need an online service back when they were specing out the next Playstation console....and it was then, back in the day 5 to 6 yrs ago whey they started the PS3 design, that they should have/could have been investing heavily in it to really make it outstanding. Instead they built a basic core online system that in many ways felt rushed and reactionary to the 360's version of Xbox Live...Almost as if they waited to see what the 360 would do before designing theirs. Sure they are updating and fixing which is commendable...but their system should have been more flushed out from the on-set given all the time they had to think this through and design it.

Sony gets props for trying but they also should be hammered for the fact that they let this opportunity fall by the waistside. Sony dropped the ball initially with online (PS2) and again with the launch of the PS3....but they still have a 3rd chance (Home & updates) to pick up the ball and run with it. We shall see.....

I been saying that Sony should copy Live feature for feature for a year now. My brother has a PS3 so I have played some PS3 games "online" and no I'm not giving out his PSN name. You droids realy need to get over at the PS forums and do what you do best whine and complain if Sony don't remove it from the forums that is. There is a reason that over 7 million people are "willing" to pay for Live, it's features are just downright endless and they keep them comming. IMO it's The experiance with operating systems and user friendly interface that MS has been doing for over 20 years that counts here.

I like XBL better. When I go to PSN it's all a bunch of sh!t crammed onto the screen. I don't want to look at little icons and txt that's hard to read on a 34" widescreen. At least XBL has stuff you can read clearly. Also, XBL has more demos and they have a nice selection of tv programs and movies.

I have both systems and you get what you pay for. I have had problems with both networks. When I called XBL customer service my problems have always been resloved. I needed to change things on my account and did not have a problem. I am 100% happy with MS customer service. Now, PSN is a different story. I can not log in. I put my username and PW and the network tells it is incorrect. I use the "forgot password" when I put in the city I was born in it says incorrect information. I know where is was born!!! I have called Sony coustomer service and they told me that they have no access to the network to change my password and a specialist has to call me to fix the problem!! The guy calls at noon in the middle of the week. No message was left, I know because I always check my caller ID. I called Sony back and got the same thing. We can't help,someone will call you. What kind of crapy C.S. is this!! You call, wait 20 minutes to have some useless phone jockey tell you some specialist will call you in the middle of the day when you are at work/school and get no where. If Sony wants to compete for my business they need to setp it up. I am not a cheapass. $50.00 a year for a service that actually provides service is a deal to me. The actual console war is far from finished but as far as I am concerned XBL BEATS PSN!!!!!!!!!

the main thing that bothers me about the PSN is every time I log on after about 2 minutes it says NETWORK ERROR OCCURED YOU HAVE BEEN SIGNED OUT OF THE PLAYSTATION NETWORK!! that happens EVERYTIME I get on but after I log on the second time its fine!! I never have this problem with XBL. plus there's just not enough content. oh an 1 last thing!! why dont they have demos for all the arcade games. you know try'em before you buy'em. I can download EVERY arcade game on XBL an play it to see if I like it. if I like it I just unlock the full game an thats it. for the few games on the PSN that does have a demo, if you like the demo now you have to download the full game because the demo an the full game are different downloads!! oh!! an why do I have to INSTALL games an game demos after I download them!!

PSN: Allows you to download all games, movie trailers, game trailers, wall paper, in perfect 1080p quality.
XBL: Has old games from older consoles= boring and Doesn't download games and whatever in full 1080p.
I'll be honest I played both systems and the PSN wins by a long shot.
Not to mention PSN has faster download times and you can download multiple things at once while still playing your games or movies.

Well...I think PSN could be better...but at the moment I think Live wins...but then again Live has a cost (sometimes I wonder, if Live should be free), PSN doesn't, and also Home is coming next year, then we can compare again.

Love the single XMB icon and single area-hate the web browser interface, but it's in one place. Hate the PSN selection, but hate the Ads on XBL(they are in the wrong spots personally), and no the ads in the store are usually for everything just not games what are they talking about.
It all boils down to preference, and I prefer PSN.

Is because they gotta somehow pay to license the marketplace content, they also need to pay for the bandwidth, server maintenance, etc.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
