It was widely reported at TGS that MS claimed that there are over 12 million consoles in peoples homes as they spoke. 7 million in the USA and 500k in Japan...and over 4.5 million in the rest of the world. Mainly Europe.

So while sony fanboys love to speculate and bash the xbox 360 any chance they get. The fact remains that their are more xbox 360's in European homes than Ps3's. Fact. If you disagree...Please show links to support your wild claims.

Even as far off as VG charts is every month....that site even supports the xbox 360 having a much bigger install base in Europe than the ps3.

What developers love even more is the fact that for every xbox 360 sold...there are 6.8 games sold. Compared to the Wii and Ps3 right at the 1.5 games sold per console.

This is pretty much bullsh!t. The 360 outsold the PS3 up till July even in Europe and at least sold as much as the PS3.

After its recent pricedrop and the introduction of the Elite, sales went up 260% in UK.

If the 360 is in trouble in Europe, the PS3 is also. Can say about my country, The Netherlands, that I know 2 people that play a PS3 (one @ work/makes stuff for consoles and one got it for free for reviewing) and I hear many people with a 360

Ah ok I mixed it up with a too fast reaction. Software then. At the moment, most games are only in English/German/France/Spanish/ Italian already. If they only keep the largests ones, for example English, it is no problem for me. In The Netherlands we already only play English games (besides some that like Fifa in Dutch... but I prefer English always).

Thus: that wouldn't be a too large problem for me at least. But French people are less allright with English, as are Spanish/Italian gamers.

The Europeans have a brain, no intelligent person buys a console of such ridiculous quality like the 3FixMe. Face it yanks, a product with a hardware flaw which can cause failures shouldn't be even sold.

Asia... i'll give them that... if they think they can make their money only selling their games on the PS3 in Asia.... then do that... business is business... (kind of interesting how they mentioned COD 4.. which is an FTP... which it's not the best cup of tea for asians).
Do I live in Asia? Nope... do I care that COD4 is not released in Asia? Can developers survive and make money by releasing their games in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and many other countries where the xbox 360 is doing great? Yes they can... Sadly for Sony Americans and other western countries are willing to give a non Asian console a chance and arent bias... making it profitable for developers that make games that western like.. only thing I care and many xbox 360 owners care. a Proven by Halo 3 games can make a ton of money on the xbox 360 even if not successful in Japan or Asia. It can take 10-20 years for Microsoft to successfuly convince the asian market but not to the western countries as the xbox 360 proved. From now on the xbox brand can only get better in the US and other countries. Let Sony have their market share in those countries... they also need to eat too. I don't think developers making games like Mass Effect, COD4, Madden, and western taste game... see Asia as their primary market....
Here is how I see it... This generation and probably the next will be fracture by regions.... pretty much how it was before... Many games would never be released in the US... but now that developers are not only Japanese... we will also see games that are never going to see the light in Japan. I don't think it will be possible for the PS3 to reach the xbox 360 installbase anymore in the US.. microsoft home town... since they know how to market and People are not resistant or bias... so it comes down to... for western countries.. if you want to make money you must make the game on the xbox 360.. for Asian countries.. you want to make money then the wii or the PS3... funny though... more copies of games and consoles are sold in the western countries...

this is crazy!! every week theres something different!! Like I have been saying, the 360 will sell about 24 million like their first console because they cant reach a larger user base. They have still been shipping consoles since. That was June folks....we are now on the eve of October. 4 months. Thats why they say there are over 12 million consoles in peoples homes. Because they have been shipping more consoles since the 11.6 million 4 months ago.

Walmart, Gamestop, Best Buy...they order more consoles when their stock runs out. If there weren't 11.6 million sold to this day. Ms would not still be shipping consoles.

Some of you sony fanboys are really clue less. You want so hard to believe that the xbox 360 hasn't sold over 12 million consoles. When MS releases its next quarterly report....they will have shipped just short of 14 million consoles due to the Halo 3 release and better hardware.

And by the end of the year there will be 18 million xbox 360s shipped. Which will be all bought up by sometime in January.

Some of you must be kids...because you really act like you have no clue how the industry works.

So now you know why MS say there are over 12 million consoles in people homes. They said it at TGS.

A. They know this because they shipped 11.6 million consoles by May/June.

B. They know because retailers have been ordering more consoles since then.

C. They know because they have shipped a little over 2 million consoles this last quarter.

D. So they don't know exactly how many have sold...but they know they have sold the 11.6 and they have shipped a few million on top of that. Which then gives them the right to say...."we have over 12 million consoles in peoples homes".

Get it? Got it? Good. Now we shouldn't have this discussion again right? VG charts and Nextgenwars just try to basically collect what ever data they can....but its far from accurate.

So far there's no official numbers about Europe because they release the numbers yearly, John Davidson is the resident European and he always says what he truly believes. This basically confirms that 360 will be third in this generation. You can't have success only selling to North America .

And I'm not talking about VGChartz BS stats. Everyone in the industry will tell you the same thing. Europe is essential to who comes out on top.

You clowns can downplay all you want since you have absolutely no knowledge of what goes on outside of your country.

Let's try to clear some of the lingering misunderstanding from the UK sales numbers. A cursory glance at total sales will not reveal the most important things that the numbers have to say. I don't really care who leads or who wins, but I get really annoyed when people toss figures around without properly thinking about them.

There is another issue about the Asia market that the podcasts seems to ignore. Software piracy is more rampant in that market than any other. Only the Japanese and South Korean markets support legitimate sales that can offset significant losses due to piracy, so if you lose big in Japan there isn't much left in the rest of the Asian market to make up for it.

Where do you get your stats that the xbox 360 is underpeforming in Europe. Because I respectfully disagree with you.

I believe the xbox 360 is doing fabuous in Europe. They are leading in TOTAL console sales over its competitors...and From Microsofts numbers....which is as official as it gets....there are just about 4 million xbox 360's sold in Europe. And that was as of E3 a few months ago.

Its common knowledge that the USA has the biggest market for Games. Next is Europe...and 3rd is Japan.

Sure the xbox 360 isn't doing as well as they would like in Japan...but its doing better than is previous effort in Japan...and thats all you can ask for right? Improvement.

So while you make these wild claims...Like....MS needs to step it up in Europe.....I ask you to provide me with FACTS....Not opinions....On why you make that statement....Which from everything I have read up on proves your statement to be false.

This constant tug of war back & forth is a big red flag being raised by the industry, because neither 360 nor PS3 are being taken up by consumers in sufficient levels to make development for either console a fiscally responsible venture. Imagine spending 2 years & $20 million dollar developing a game for the PS3 only to come to market & find that market effectively cut in half. Develop for 360 & lose Europe or develop for PS3 & lose North America. What do you do when you need both to turn a profit?

Frankly I think it's time for Nintendo to introduce an N64 style controller for the Wii along with a new marketing push, "You Choose, Wii Play."

MS will have shipped just under 18 million consoles by years end. SO we can safely assume that there will be 17 plus million consoles sold by the end of the year. Wii will be the winner this Christmas a lot of parents is going to be buying it for their children..If the rumor is true and Sony is in fact releasing the 40gb that cost $399 we will see a big increase of sales. The 360 and PS3 will have a big battle this holidays and I think the Sony will take it because there is many people just waiting for another price cut. In Europe even though Microsoft seem to be dominating but i feel that people is not really supporting them. There is no use in bickering over what console sold what. All 3 are going to still be around for a long time. November is the second biggest selling month for consoles every single year.

December is the biggest selling month for consoles every single year.

Last year with ONLY Gears of War...the xbox 360 sold 2 million consoles in the month of December. They sold 700k in November and 500k in October.

This year will be much bigger than last year.

All with a supposive 110 million ps2 fanbase....LOL....You can't say the ps2 gamers aren't buying ps2 games because they have a ps3....LOL....The ps3 games are selling even worse. Lair averages in the 5's....Heavonly sword is averagig 8.0 right now with many sites giving it 5 and 6's with a solid amount of 7's....and Warhawk the same as heavonly sword stradeling an 8 barely.

Its funny to hear people attempt to bash the biggest selling game of our generation and a supremely highly rated sprinkled in with some 8.8's....

The 5 biggest games to come out for the Ps3 were all major let downs. And maybe thats why you guys are so fierce towards Halo 3. LOL....

Fact, they are concerned. Like many devs are concerned about the PS3's price. So talk about that and not about who will win the freaking war and why.

My two cents to the discussion.

All next gen consoles are under performing in Europe (maybe not the Wii). That as a preface. I think, both M$ and Sony need to double their sales if they want to be successful in the long run.

If a publisher says, they think about "withdrawing" from rest of Europe, but keep supporting UK only, one reason might be, that it costs them pretty nothing to release to UK in addition to the US.

Localization plays a huge role here. If the sales can't justify the additional costs, its hard to release into these territories. Maybe its just greed. I do not think the studios make any loss by doing the additional localizations, but if you don't cross book these costs to the English version (which might be the one you will start off with), then obviously the e.g. French or German version is more expensive (this even more so with the new technology, where, e.g. you have lip sync audio which would require you to re-render animation because they are so detailed now a days).

For me, there is fire in Sony's house as well. But I think, compared to Sony, M$ has one year head start. Said that, they are still where they were a year ago. Sony will react. With two things: That is game library and price. It is hard to see how M$ can counter that. Halo (game supposed to drive sales) and price (the recent price cut) happened already. If that doesn't really drive sales, I think they are in a bigger danger.

It might be perception. There is a reason why 360 is so strong in the US. That is the focus on shooters and sports games (Madden/NBA/MLB). None which you can really sell outside of the US. Now, FIFA08 and PES08 try to expand that a bit, but there will never be a result like Madden in the EU for example. So, yes, the big drives for the American market do not exist in Europe (Japan might have RPGs), but Europe is more a big variety thru out the range of titles.

Well, and there is still the "M$" factor. And that is maybe more a political perception. While M$ is pretty popular in the US (and considered as THE American achievement), it is considered as a "conquerer" everywhere else. Simple as it is. That is maybe also a reason for M$ to have it harder in Europe and Asia. I wouldn't go that far as to say, they (everybody outside the US) hate M$ (maybe a lot do), but if they have a choice they might go with something else. With all the issues and business practices, which become public in regards to M$ (buyouts, quality, etc), it hurts M$ more then the other companies. Now, I know all the companies do that, but in case of MS it is more the general perception like "obvioulsy, that's what they are known for".

I have no idea, how MS could win this battle, to be honest. As soon as the PS3 price is down to 360 level, it is pretty much over for MS, I am pretty sure. MS had its chance. If the 360 could have proven, that it is superior (that is, quality of the product and better performing games), that would have looked different. But, quality wise they screwed it up completely. The PS3 games currently prove that the Sony console is more powerful then the 360 (which knocks down the performance point), well, what remains is the price and the game library. Both things will get attacked pretty heavily maybe as early as this Christmas season. Halo alone will not be enough to decide the battle, IMO, especially outside the US.

But, whatever, these are just predictions. The race is not over yet. A lot can happen. We'll see where we stand in a year from now.

Honestly; all it takes is for microsoft to drop the price of the premium to $250 and they've basically beaten sony.

And obviously the corresponding price in europe.

PS3 sales are good even with that expensive price tag and it hasn't been a year yet. PS3 has a ton of most likely AAA titles coming soon and in 2008. Do you xbots realize that 360 has had most of its powerful games dished out way too fast and the fact that it looks like all of them are at peak performance. If sales are neck and neck and PS3 is still expensive, you all know whats happening. I'll tell you. Everyone in Europe knows that, hit after hit games for 360 keeps on coming but whats left in the future? That's why they're looking at Sony's console ,for its lifespan/future values. They won't spend money on 360 that has no future anymore. I think that's why they're so close together in Europe.

What kind of energy is left for him? in this case, what kind of performance and games are left for 360? It's a good move right now for great AAA titles but what's left in the long run. Its lifespan will be short, forcing yet, another Xbox. Look at Wii, there's nothing else that can be done with it, artist flexibility on graphical performance is out of the question. The US is the reason for the fuss, cause people carry too much about this country numbers, but in UK the things are on the same level between PS3 and X360, while other EU countries and Japan, Sony take the lead over X360.

In fact, don't matter what worldwide number you look at... That sum of "official" numbers (NPD + Enterbrain + GfK) just show that MS would have 8.9m and Sony 3.7m, and since MS was about 6m while PS3 release over US and JP, it means PS3 has outsold X360 worldwide since Sony's console come to light, specially since March, when PS3 was released in EU.

If you preffer officialy official numbers from firms, which we all call shippment number, MS said has reached 12.6m, but they was claiming to reach 10m in the last holiday, while Sony says has shipped 6m. Make the math...

Sure this is for Hardware numbers, but the Software ones just trend to fallow.

The 360's doing fairly well in North America, where something like 75% of its sales take place. Japan is obviously a lost cause, and Europe (except for the U.K.) has been at a halt for quite some time now. This is very significant because Europe has the potential to become larger and more important than North America from the perspective of a worldwide games industry. In fact, a lot of high profile PS3 titles are coming out of Europe, such as Heavenly Sword, The Getaway series, Singstar, Wipeout, Killzone 2, and the new online platform, HOME.

European sales for PS2 nearly matched North American sales for the popular console, which goes to show how significant that market is. It's actually easy to see why Xbox 360 sales are so low, despite its two-year market presence, and why the Wii and PS3 caught up so quickly.

If developers can sell a million copies of a game in NA and UK they'll be happy. It's just region crap like different languages and such that they need to spend more money to change, so for some developers it might not be worth it.

Its because Europeans are a 'third party'. They don't feel (as)loyal as Americans do about the 360, and not (as)loyal about the Japanese with the ps3

They choose what they want. Why would they want a 360 with all of the hardware faults of late and so many games to come out in the very near future for the ps3? Halo 3 would be the only reason, unless they were just plain impatient and can't wait AT ALL for their games(The ps3's game drought is perfectly normal for the first year of any console btw). The ps3 is the more promising console right now, and most people look at least a few months into the future when buying anything that is $300 or more I would hope.

People outside of the United States see Microsoft as a low-tech, shyt product w/ no reliability and a "one track mind" mentality when it comes to variety or lack thereof in games availability. Without America MS would only be a software publisher right now like Sega. I almost feel sorry for them, but that's what happens when you try to be like the PS2 and the world can see right through your histrionics.

People worldwide are simply waiting for the PlayStation 3 to drop in price because it's a console and a game peddler "they can trust". I realize it will prolly be ignored, but for those who care to see past the BS spin and how the situations for MS and Sony really stand, and where they likely will be in the future should check this out. It's not just software that is causing foreign consumers to turn their back on it. I don't know about Europe, but one of the core complaints in Japan is that the hardware is horribly made, and just not worth the money to buy half-assed American electronics. The rest of the world doesn't live in the same "buy this cause we say it's great" consumer culture as Americans do.

It's kind of embarrassing that America's hardware contribution to the world of gaming is something that breaks 30% of the time. Yeah, yeah, call me a fanboy if you want, I wouldn't expect much else from this site, but in all reality I just wish the thing wasn't rushed out the door to get a jump on everyone, basically releasing the equivalent of beta software in hardware form.

360 games and PS3 games are the most selling games in many countries beating already PC in several areas in Europa outside UK.

If the game is good it will sell. European people won't buy crap.

I don't know if the article is true, but even if it is, Microsoft is still doing/has done a hell of a job with their first two consoles. It takes a lot to become a powerhouse in this industry where many have failed (Sega, Atari, Neo Geo, etc.). This is an industry where you can be on top for two generations, and then be outsold the next. You really have to strive to stay ahead of the pack if you want to be number one.

Even if Microsoft isn't quite where they want to be in some parts of the world, I think they eventually will be, because they are persistent, aggressive (both in marketing and securing great games/exclusives), and most of all, they have the money to do it. And we all know that money talks.

I'm honestly embarrassed that America has released such a piece of crap they call a gaming console.

And the PES2008 + PS3 bundle will end the war in Europe.

360 will not sale much more than the first xbox.

ps3 will sell as much as the ps2.

....this is the beginning of the end for microsoft and the 360. All hail the mighty PS3 and all of its fantastic games that are out and its awesome online service, so much better than xbox live. I really love Sony and how they stick to their release schedules and how their first party titles really show what their console can do. The graphics are on another level to the 360's, not even comparable. I love the six axis, omg a dream, really shown off with Lair, just amazing. Note this is serious sarcasm. I am not a fanboy, i own both consoles but neither of these consoles are doing amazing.... FACT. The idiot that posted this took the whole statement out of context. The above title should read: "European developers..." not just "developers". Big difference between Eurpoean and all developers. Plus I think the whole discussion was on how terrible the PS3's pricing scheme is.
