The iPad 2

Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a dual-core A5 chip and, finally, cameras, both front and rear! The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same.

Tempist5537d ago

Pixel, there have been many more netbooks (which have more power than lame duck iPads) and do more than any iPad can achieve. Better yet, they cost the same or less.

So if you and many thousands more like you want to throw good money at an over powered typically useless device, then have fun playing angry birds while the rest of the world actually gets shit done.

Muletroid5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

i say updated hardware in this case is a useless thing because there will be an even more updated version a few months later

9 months to 1 year from now when the ipad 3 is released those specs will become completely irrelevant not that anyone will even take advantage of them in that short amount of time just like all the other apple updates

Active Reload5537d ago

Tempest, this is about tablets, not netbooks/laptops. If you're going to sound bitter, at least use another brand of tablet to make your argument. tablet/laptop = hotdog/hamburger

Pixelated_Army5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

(look it I got 11 disagrees. lmao)

@Tempist

Macbook air crushes all these little netbooks but we're talking tablets here.

Dude it's so much more than just the hardware(!) it's the software, it's music/movie/podcast/tv/games/e -books/ Apps /Airplay/AppleTV with it's seemless video/audio streaming.

And that's the main reason why all other tablets fail to challenge the iPad in any significant way. It's the software stupid!

"Steve Jobs figured out what Bill Gates didn't: tablet computers aren't about the computer; they're about the combination of software totally designed around your fingertip and an internet book store, on-demand TV network, music/movie store, and so on, rolled into one ready-to-go-the-moment-you-swi tch-it-on package."

The iPad's secret sauce: it's the software, stupid!
http://apcmag.com/the-ipads...

And CNN is gushing over the new iPad. :D Happy Apple fanboy here on a new tech high. lulz

specialguest5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

Yet still no full web support(flash), and no real USB support. A lot of my favorite sites still use flash. The iPad would have been the idea tablet had they incorporated these features.

B-b-b-but Da HTML5!? What HTML5?? By the time the majority of the net converts to HTML5, the headlines will read iPad5 debutes.

Redman225537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

Just a heads up on predictions for iPad 2 sales. It's said that Apple will sell 50 million iPads in 2011. Oh sh*t!

@specialguest

Is Adobe's mobile flash still the same old battery draining monster that I remember? Well then, you have your answer. Don't blame Apple for something that's obviously Adobe's fault.

Moentjers5537d ago

so when do you guys buy a new PC or a new graphics card ?

the day you unbox it, it's... old !

I lol'ed at that, so true. Internet explorer is the only one holding back on HTML5 right now, there are video tags, VIDEO TAGS!

HolyOrangeCows5537d ago

This is why I don't buy Apple products. They purposely plan to make their own technology obsolete in a few months, so that you'll buy something new.

lame.

Annual releases are made to keep the item relevant and in the news. If you have an iPad, there's no need for a newer one. Those who don't have one, though, and weren't sold on the first one, might be sold on an iPad 2.

EYEamNUMBER15537d ago

except that a BIG majority of people that will get the ipad 2 are people that are upgrading from an ipad 1

its always like that and that is honestly why i find this completely stupid and retarded

i can't tell you how many retards always upgrade apple products annually

Christopher5537d ago

Hey, it's their money, let them do what they want with it. I've spent money on stuff that others would find a waste, I'm sure everyone else here has done the same.

Gray-Fox5537d ago

@EYEamNUMBER1

I'm an iPad 1 owner. I doubt I'll ever upgrade to a future release of an iPad... my current device does everything I need it to do and some faster specs aren't going to make me buy another.

Christopher5537d ago

If anyone is actually interested in comparing the latest tablets, here's a good image with them side by side.

as compared to what? other tablets? ur kidding right?

thewhoopimen5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

@disagrees? Why the disagrees? build me a boxen from pricewatch.com, make it into a 4mm 1.3lb form factor with 9.7" capacitative touch screen using an IPS LCD Display with 32 or 64gb SSD and price it out along the same lines. You guys seem to forget miniaturization is a very difficult feat to achieve...you think all the competitors were just twiddling their thumbs and doodling on Google Sketchup for a year? Why aren't there $200 tablets out there already? Ya thunk?

Tempist5537d ago

Lulz,

Apple users just got F'd in the A once again! More so to any dummy who just bough one / got one for Christmas.

Then again, who was bothering to waste their money in the first place?

HarryBarry5537d ago

Apple have sold 1,000,000 iPhones.

falviousuk5537d ago

100,000,000 to be more precise, not a million

Tempist5537d ago

You all do know Nokia still manages to control at least 40% of the cellular market right? They sell approximately 100 Million phones every quarter.

Gohadouken5537d ago

and ? What's your point anyway ?

How long has nokia been around in the mobile market , and how the hell they , along others lost the rest of it ?

You do realise in your mockery that Apple still manage to take shares from mobile centric companies with it's first few tries ?

Christopher5537d ago

***You all do know Nokia still manages to control at least 40% of the cellular market right? They sell approximately 100 Million phones every quarter.***

Apple really doesn't care if they're #1 or not, they have way more than enough numbers to support a continued growth of app/media sales, which is where they make the most of their money.

Moentjers5537d ago

Nokia only sells well in the cheap segment. they completely lost the high-end market.

hahaha

grow up dude.. every company does this

Muletroid5537d ago

every company releases the same product with a few upgrades in a period of a few months to a year?

BulletToothtony5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

yep they sure do..

TVs
Cars
Monitors
Video Cards
Watches
Computers
Mp3 players
Printers
Surround sound systems
Microwaves
Anything related to electronics pretty much

@Kon

how am i a fanboy for saying that companies refresh their products every year?

In reality apple haters are the ones with the problem. I'm pointing out a fact, you're calling me names without anything else to say.. hmmm

EYEamNUMBER15537d ago

"In reality apple haters are the ones with the problem"

apple haters don't go out and spend hundreds of dollars every year on the EXACT same thing they already own

Gohadouken5537d ago (Edited 5537d ago )

Then why do apples haters even care ?

isnt that the same line usually fed in the whole dlc vs no dlc debate , or free psn vs paid xbl , call of duty vs xxx fps ?

How come it magically wouldnt work here ?

Baka-akaB5537d ago

It means that those that care can basically get the same thing cheaper with the first gen .

Myst5537d ago

Exactly what I was thinking.

tablav5537d ago

part of my work involves editing videos and clients insist I use Final Cut Pro for some projects. Becuase of that, I have to own a Macbook Pro. Because of this, I've come to love it am now a bit of an Apple freak.

But I still can't justify spending an extortionate amount of money on what is essentially a big iPod touch. About the only think the iPad is good for is being able to more easily read web pages/books etc, but for less money you can buy a cheap laptop.

I'd like to own an Ipad and I do hope that this makes the 1st gen come down in price, because these are too expensive, even by Apple standards.

Gohadouken5537d ago

I've always wanted one and come pleased so far from interracting with it .

My main focus and need for it are comics and manga scans , along with a few minor chores i perform while moving around . I dont feel comfortable reading those on a laptop and already use them on a big desktop screen anyway at home .

If laptop are a nono , why not go tablet they usually said ?

Tablet pcs were crap forcefully trying to be inferior pcs with a painful ergonomy at outrageous prices .

So yeah of course i welcome ios and android based tablets instead , and will most likely pick an ipad 1 now that its price will drop .

Moentjers5537d ago

hey look over there, it's a new motherboard. that sucks. they should at least wait 2years to add something new !

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay2d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn22d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn21d 22h ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown2d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay2d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay2d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac1d 17h ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger2d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster30002d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde2d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde1d 21h ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
