Is Bulletstorm really a hardcore shooter?

Critical Gamer writes: Whenever an article uses a question as a title, it’s fair to assume that the author has an answer in mind, which they wish to spend some time (perhaps too long) explaining and justifying. Said answer is usually negative where possible. It’s human nature; for example, if you ask a friend ‘What does she think she looks like?’, the continuation of that thought will not be ‘Because I think she looks great‘. Indeed, my answer to the question at the top of the page is ‘no’. Whether you agree or disagree with me, I’m well aware that nothing I say is likely to change your mind. So why am I writing this? Good question. Consider it an act of catharsis if you like.

First of all, we need to establish what I mean by ‘hardcore shooter’. I don’t mean a shooter that sticks hard and fast to the core of what a typical FPS (or any shooter at all) does. Those elements are all present and correct in Bulletstorm; there are guns to shoot with, things to be shot, and a system in place to reward you for shooting those things with the weapons provided. It’s fair to say that describes the skeleton that holds together any game that can be described as a ‘shooter’, right? So no, that’s not what I mean.

Marmite of the gaming world, this title (in that it's derived from yeast extract).

Snezana5571d ago

I think they meant to make it more hardcore through all the skill shots, and although they were tons of fun, you didn't have to train yourself to use them effectively in order to win. I would've loved Bulletstorm to take a bit more advantage of the skill shots, and actually make the player have to become skilled to pass through the world. Right now it was fairly easy, and I didn't really have to think about the approach or the skill shots I used, or the way I tackled bosses.

Still, I enjoyed Bulletstorm a lot :) A little short, but it gave me a very fun day of gaming!

Raptura5571d ago

Not really. It's the same thing over and over.

@Calm Down Sunshine

I think there is. I'm just about to polish of my second playthrough.
The gameplay is fair;y rewarding when you get the hang of it. I played it on hard and it was fine gamplay wise. But I plugged in a gamepad ( on PC ) and played it through on easy and the weapon charge attacks and ammo are much cheaper so you can have a lot more fun with it.

@ Thread title...

There are no hardcore games. There are only gamers, and deluded fools who tell themselves their cookie cutter preference of games are somehow more elite by labelling them hardcore.

"When you meet Waggleton P. Tallylicker... well that is the moment you realize this is an awesome game. "

This.

There is so much variety in combat situations and 'set piece' battles.

Waggleton is a beefcake.

wicked5571d ago

Yes, I enjoyed it, made a pleasant change.

DemonStration5571d ago

It's okay. I can't imagine anyone paying $60 for it is going to feel like they got their money's worth though. Too short and unpolished.

BLACKBOIJONES5571d ago

Bulletstorm sucks...It was fun when i first played it but after a while it gets boring doing the same shit over and over again.

And all that Toilet Humor jokes is dry.

Bulletstorm is gay, the gaming media is gay, and everyone who likes this game is fucking gay!!! I love the way when you kick someone all of a sudden they go in slo mo but everyone else is still going at regular speed. <rolls eyes>. Please for the sake of everything that is holy in the gaming world, do not support this piece of crap on a CD

Duty Calls - Epic Games' Forgotten Call of Duty Parody

Back in 2011, Epic Games and People Can Fly launched a Call of Duty parody - Duty Calls - that has been lost to the annals of history.

"Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm" sounds more like a massive case of the sh**s. 😂

I saw the parody mention, and half expected the ability to drop a deuce on your opponent... I left disappointed.

Bulletstorm - A Cult Classic Worthy of Revival?

Bulletstorm will soon receive a VR remake, but is it worth revisiting? Take a look back at the original 2011 release.

IMissJimRyan1088d ago

Absolutely. I remember when the game came out on ps360, I thought: "wow, another shooter" and in the 7th gen that wasn't an unfair reaction.

But when the game was re-release on ps4 I took my time an played it (it was on playstation plus at the time) because, ironically, I missed a shooter in that console. And boy, what a fun game! They made a game to be played and not to be watched. It was a fresh air in the genre that deserved better.

So yes. Maybe it find its audience this time.

SullysCigar1087d ago

It's an awesome game. The only exception (for my taste) is the script writing, which is OTT, but I guess that's what they were going for. It does at least match the OTT action and gore. I thought it was great overall and actually being in this game is going to be bonkers!

IMissJimRyan1087d ago

Yeah, I agree that storywise it's not an Oscar nominee, but it's like a porn movie in game format.

Abnor_Mal1087d ago (Edited 1087d ago )

Agree with the over the top script, and felt at the time that was the only thing that people were hyped about, the language and not game play.

But in vr this game is going to be great. It has everything that would make a great vr game. Lots of bombastic action, gunplay, blood, and that leash.

Looking at the gameplay now it seems that the game was ahead of it’s time and was perfect for vr before vr wasn’t even off the ground.

Venoxn4g1087d ago

I loved the game back in the day and will love in VR even more!

Yui_Suzumiya1087d ago (Edited 1087d ago )

I got it on PS3 at launch and am still waiting for the long rumored sequel to finally be announced. Currently have it on Switch and wish a physical version of that would be released. Absolutely love it.

FinalFantasyFanatic1087d ago

I actually feel like this game gets revived all the time, not that I hate the game, I actually quite like it, it's just constantly available, unfortunately I'm not a fan of VR so I'll be skipping this version.

Bloodborne is a game I still restart and play every few months. I would welcome just a re release in 60fps with a visual upgrade. It's a perfect game. If I was king for a day I would include the randomizer mods because then it would be a kind of rogue like and I could play it forever.

danglyparts1122d ago

Sure, ill take a sequel to all of these.
