Dragon Age II isn’t really an RPG

Examiner: Having now played through the Dragon Age II demo three times (once as each class) I can safely say it is very different from the original. Dragon Age II is a fast-paced hack-n-slash which represents another step towards the "action RPG."

its just another hack&slash game now...

Xander7565567d ago

Oh I agree! I wish they still made turn-based RPGs. It's a good game and definitely worth a buy...but is it really still a role-playing game?

NYC_Gamer5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

its not rpg/the sequel to the beloved dragon age i wanted.... was so hyped for this game until played the demo.

evrfighter5567d ago

ya after reading the article. I've come to agree. DA2 is definitely a hack n slash.

teething5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

Is DA2 a 'Role Playing Game?'

It is indeed a GAME - CHECK

In this game you do play a ROLE - CHECK

The only thing that has changed from DAO is priorities. Faster combat, faster pacing, more cinematic, less dialogue. No one is to blame for these changes but the fans: Bioware keeps telemetry, and you guys should not have skipped so much dialogue on your 3-7th playthroughs, cause Bioware "fixed it" based on your gameplay.

@ above - is DA2 a hack and slash game? No more than DAO... as you can turn auto hit on just like in DAO. It is off by default in the demo.

RedDead5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

That's the impression the demo gave me too

jriquelme_paraguay5567d ago

dont know why.. but the demo was sooo boring to me.. dissapointed

Xfanboy5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

you said it! If Mass Effect 3 turned into a hack and slash I'll be pissed!!

TronEOL5567d ago

Not in the slightest.

Take a look at God of War/Devil May Cry and then back to Dragon Age 2. You'll see a mighty difference. Or maybe I just missed the part of God of War/Devil May Cry where I could edit every single stat of my character, or advance my skills and control a party of characters WHILE selecting how my story progresses.

Yeah, okay. A better explanation to this would be you just don't know what an RPG is. Same goes for the 5 people that agree with you.

despair5567d ago

I have to agree, it played like a bad hack and slash crossed with Dynasty Warriors(with equally bad graphics), no one wants that.

Damn does anybody like the DA2 demo.

Esena5567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

To those who didn't like the DA2 demo... have you played it on the PC? Because it plays very much like DA:O on the PC.

Edit: And yes.. the PS3 Demo was very very very boring.

WildArmed5567d ago

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.
And people need to realize what a RPG is.
DA2 is definitely a RPG, i don't know what kind of genres people are making up.
But what else can you call DA2?
People are waaay too narrow-minded in their definition of RPG games.

By that logic, Zelda:OoT wasn't an RPG game, just a H&S.

On PC, it very much feels like an RPG/DA:O sequel.
While I have not played the console demo, so I cannot comment on the changes they made porting the game to consoles

hassi945567d ago (Edited 5567d ago )

I've played it on my PC and Xbox. Only real difference is graphics (which on this game are very minuscule, though DX11 and very high settings don't work properly in the demo), and the fact that PC auto-attacks when you click on someone, but on Xbox (and I assume, PS3 too) you have to tap the attack button repeatedly.

Oops, I read down and apparently there's an option to auto attack in the console version too. Well then there's hardly any difference. Should be a great game.

InfiniteJustice5567d ago

You're completely right, of course DA2 is an RPG. I have no idea where people are getting the idea that the game is hack and slash. So you press X to attack? You can do a combo of 4 attacks by mashing X? It must be a hack and slash, then... Ffs..

mephish5567d ago

you can TURN AUTO ATTACK on in the game.. so that you hit A/X once and your character will continue to attack like in Orgins,,,, not a hack N slash, unless you want it to be.

also have read that you can turn on the damage numbers that float above the heads.... bioware dropped the ball on this demo by turing the AUTO ATTACK off.

teething5567d ago

stop with all of your logic. Logic does not make for a good bitch article. ;)

The problem with any sequel that tries to improve is that you have some people who love the changes, and some who hate them and want nothing to change.

I love the DA2 changes. No numbers over the heads... who cares, the damage is calculated silently. No auto-hit... turn it on. No race customization... deal with it because you have full dialogue.

Based on the reviewers definition of an RPG... there goes fallout, and oblivion.

I guess this is what you call Action RPG. lol

Dragon Age Lead Says Including World State Reactivity Felt Like It Was "Irrelevant Or Not Enough"

Dragon Age 2 set the precedent that the series would always carry our choices over, but was it worth it?

If the choices won't matter, why bother? Bioware works so hard at giving meaningful choices but rarely if ever carrying out the impact of such choices to the end.

EA Made Dragon Age and Mass Effect DLC Free On PC By Retiring The BioWare Points System

Immersed Gamer writes: "In order to replace the oppressive BioWare Points system, EA is making a large portion of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC catalogs free for PC users.

For those of you blissfully unaware, EA and BioWare employed a payment system called BioWare Points on PC to pay for DLCs for titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. While PC gamers have been struggling with BioWare point’s unfair conversion rates and extremely scarce and cost-detrimental sales.

Console players have been allowed to purchase content in pieces through the appropriate Sony and Microsoft shops. For real money, and not BioWare monopoly bucks. In turn, console players missed out on some DLC content, such as Mass Effect 2 pre-order bonuses that have been repackaged into a DLC pack."

Great response to Ubisoft and their disgusting behavior. Ubisoft decide to take away DLC from people who paid for it, while EA give it for free to everyone when they realize their system sucks. Who would have thought that EA of all companies would be showing Ubisoft how it should be done (even if this is EA fixing their own mistakes as well).

Mobis-New-Nest1411d ago

What goes around comes around and I promise you, Ubisoft will see their actions blow back on them when their diminishing sales numbers and stock taking a hit downward. That's the only way a company learns when they decide to be reactive instead of proactive.

All BioWare Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "There was a time that BioWare games were the biggest deal in gaming. The Canadian developer’s legacy of all-time classics is well known. Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, and Baldur’s Gate are some of the biggest names in gaming.

While BioWare’s quality has fallen off lately, there’s no denying the quality of titles in their portfolio. That’s why we’re going to dive in and rank every BioWare game from worst to best. By every, I do mean every BioWare game, even the ones you completely forgot about!"

autobotdan1570d ago

Wow to think at one point in their history they made a Sonic the Hedgehog game..crazy

chicken_in_the_corn1570d ago

Anthem is crazy underrated. I really enjoyed it. ME1 is Bioware's best imo

I actually put quite a bit of hours into Anthem but i dont think its underrated. It was a huge mess, server issues, gameplay issues, crashes, no endgame loop, too few different enemies, uninteresting gear. too few dungeons.

It for sure had potential and if they could have managed to keep the same gameplay of the classes but without the rest of the issues, this game could have been huge, but in the state in which it launched it was such a letdown. They partly fixed some of the issues, but it took too long. A grinding game like this needs to hook players from day 1.
