Does Easy Mode Make You Less a Gamer?

It’s not just the players who trivialize the efforts of anyone who dares to choose Easy Mode — game developers share plenty of the blame. The name itself has some pretty negative connotations to start with. It’s almost as if we’re being told, “Listen, this is as low as we can go. If you can’t make it through with all these handicaps we’re throwing you, then you should probably just go live in a cave and play games with sticks and rocks, because you probably shouldn’t be handling electronics. You could hurt yourself.”

easy mode is the only way to play games, if you don't want challenge (achivos, trophies)

rezzah5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

playing games on hard mode doesn't make you any more of a gamer than those who choose easy mode.

Its just how big your passion for gaming is what makes you a "bigger" gamer than others.

NewMonday5556d ago

I usually play easy mode just to experience the story, games with good gameplay I play on normal,.

but a special game like Vanquish I played on hard after finishing normal mode, this game is pure arcade, the only trophy I missed was the one for the severely punishing challenge mode

grailly5556d ago

For me games are more about the experience than about the challenge, so I nearly never play on difficult mode. I still do play on normal mode though, because I imagine that that's the mode the developers had in mind when making the game.

crzyjackbauer5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

on easy modes you cant enjoy the game you just run through them

if you play any cod in veteran they are way more fun, you learn to use weapons like in COD2 i loved the kark98 over any other weapon
i cleared COD4 in veteran and its a beast
but i had a blast i nearly broke my controller out of rage

you cant really enjoy games on easy as you do in hard modes

they just dont make the games like they use to
back in the 8-bit times games were hard as hell
but didint that make them more fun?
would mario be fun if you always had infinite star power? hello no you would just be pressing the right button on the d pad, thats what games are these days just shooting through stuff

WildArmed5556d ago

haha, exactly it doesn't matter what mode, just how ya feel about gaming.

I play all my RTS games on easy lol
I play my Action games to the last diffculty.
I play my TPS to the hardest difficulty
I DON'T play any racing games above easy ;)

So yeah, difficulty that you play a game has nothing to do w/ your 'gamer' status.

It's important to give gamers an option
Not all gamers can handle the same difficulty in different types of genres.

KotC5556d ago

Yes and no.

If you choose easy first time out your probably just a noob. If you play on easy after playing on normal or hard to unlock things makes you a gamer. So IMO playing on easy first time out just means you're new to gaming or have little experience, or you just suck.

Games are supposed to be fun. If the game is too hard for you, there's no shame in going down a difficulty level or two. There's no sense in sitting there punishing yourself and not having any fun, just to be "challenged" or say you beat the game on Normal or above. Harder difficulty levels are there for the masochists who enjoy that kind of gaming. I personally think it's more work than play though. Especially trophy/achievement grinding. Friends of mine literally get to a screaming point playing hardcore/grinding and to me that doesn't look fun at all.

UnSelf5556d ago

ppl who generally play on easy mode tend to miss out on what a game can actually be.

i play every single game on hard and i find the experience much more engrossing:

-AI is much more responsive

-Your critical thinking process is enhance

-and its much much more rewarding

MidnytRain5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

I guess we could just acknowledge the elephant in the room by asking the essential question. Does being bad at video games make you less of a gamer? Does beasting through every challenge make you more of a gamer? If two people were put in front of me (each representing one the above types of players) and I was asked to pick one, I would probably say that the latter was the "real" gamer.

badz1495556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

I just play on "hard" if there's trophy for it and I feel it's worth it!

but this impression about "hard" being 'actually' hard and immerse gameplay BS really need to be 'corrected'! I think many would agree that some games are not even hard on "hard" like BFBC, inFAMOUS, Batman AA, MoH, JC2 etc. and this is coming from an average gamer. some games...scratch that, MANY games on "hard" are usually just using cheap shots like grenade spam in CoD W@W, and having enemies being too 'perfect' where they are capable of taking like 10 bullets before they finally die and can land headshots on you while running using freaking AK-47 - from like half a mile away!! or having enemies with insane health meters and then take away like half your health with just 1 hit! these are many times frustrating than challenging and it brings frustration, not fun! that's why I rather stay playing on "normal" where most games stay normal and I can have fun!

GamerEdie5556d ago

That's kinda the point of the article.

PS-_-GAMER5556d ago

Lol Try Playin MegaMan 10 on Easy

RedDead5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

Meh, quit whining about it. Easy mode is Easy for anyone who can handle a controller. Some people who aren't gamers just cant get the grasps of a joypad. It takes them a while, Easy is for starters. So you don't die quick and have a chance to react. However if you want to play the full experiance of the game it needs to be challeging even if only a bit. Whats the fun of walking through a level on easy for any of us? Do you like the idea of your 3d avatar walking? Really anyone on this site... Does anyone normally play on easy?

gravemaker5556d ago

i always play on easy, because i dont want to lose any nerves for stupid games

SuperLupe5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

I play on easy too for most of my games for the simple reason that I dont have the time to play the same level 10 times.

Doesnt make me less a gamer though.

edit: and I dont care at all about trophies/achievements.

Downtown boogey5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

It IS a good point! It's not sensible to be angry at something that you payed to entertain you. BUT games simply aren't meant to be ploughed thru the easiest, either. Finding the balance is important and usually it's apparent which mode of difficulty is the "intended" one by the developer (well, the middle one). That's the one I pick and finish at first and then I might go for the challenge.

Playing most games on the easiest mode usually ruins the game's design and pacing completely. The idea is simply lost.

CrazyOrange5556d ago

I tend to select normal to hard difficulty.

If I like the game very much, I chose above normal.

If I don’t like it much, normal would be enough.

I think playing game on easy is very shameful and cheap for a gamer!!

Games is all about challenges, if there is no challenge, it feel like playing a children games.

StarCSR5556d ago

Depends on what game... I play some games on easy (shooters for example) and some on normal. And I've been gaming for like 20 years now :)

NYC_Gamer5556d ago

nope, because everyone isn't on the same skill level.

thebudgetgamer5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

i like to play the first run of any game on easy then go back in for the challenge.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_195d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto195d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay195d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730195d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman190d ago (Edited 190d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty195d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602195d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty195d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981195d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts195d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno195d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE195d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai195d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex195d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover195d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator195d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia195d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

EA Shoots Down Dead Space 2 Remake Rumors: 'No Validity to This Story'

EA has shut down rumors that EA Motive considered a Dead Space 2 remake before shelving it due to low sales of the previous game, saying there's "no validity" to the reports.

XiNatsuDragnel765d ago

Sure.... right.... at least remake dead space 3 w/o microtransactions bs.

XiNatsuDragnel764d ago

I sometimes I wished I didn't Ngl lol

Knightofelemia765d ago

Why not remake DS2 whether shot down or not it's still my favorite game next to DS1. As much as I hate EA I would buy or would have bought DS2 day one.

MeteorPanda764d ago

No validity XD "Guys guys, we cant possible make a good game or cater to the gamers wants, stop"

Yi-Long764d ago

I don't know if sales met their expectations or not. I just know that the high review scores received my attention so I was interested in buying it, but its price stayed high (50+ bucks) for so long that I simply never bothered picking it up.

Tacoboto764d ago

Doesn't pay full price
Doesn't pay *any* price
Ponders if sales met expectations regarding an allegedly canceled sequel.

Gee...

Yi-Long764d ago

Well, for starters, I'm sure there are plenty of games I never bought which did, somehow, still, meet their sales-expectations.

Concerning Dead Space; I never played and thus cared for the original. It's in multiple genres (shooter, sci-fi, horror) I don't particularly care about so it was barely on my radar pre-launch. I was never its target-audience.

When reviews hit, and it was scoring big, it gathered my interest, so while it wasn't in my field of interest, it mrans that I wanted to give it a fair shot and at least give it a try, as I do with many games across different genres; I tend to just cherry-pick the good stuff and see if it's for me or not.

But, I do wait for sales on those games I take a risk on.

Kornholic764d ago (Edited 764d ago )

Lol, you are a huge part of the problem. If a very high-quality game is not even worth 50 bucks to you, then what is?
