Why Mass Effect isn’t as good as remembered

Thunderbolt: I played through the first installment in 2008, and I’ve yet to play the sequel . Before I take the plunge and play the heralded followup, I went back to the original. It’s still a great game, but not nearly as good as I remembered. Have all those years had a negative effect on the game, or was it simply my faulty memory? Here are three reasons why the game isn’t nearly as I once thought it was.

I played ME1 right before starting ME2 again, and wow did i start hating ME2. The story, side-quests, and RPG elements are better in ME1.

RedDead5562d ago

Yeah I thought ME1 was an 8/10 good. Fun quality game. ME2 though, I can't finish it. It''s too boring. Between Minig and crappy characters, also the squad didn't seem...how can I say it, like partners? They just didn't fit together or something...
Atleast Garrus was still the shi*

I thought both of them were awsome and one of the best games.

I think your one of those guys toward mid evil RPGs

Mood + story ruled in first one.
I also prefer the gameplay of the first one. It had strong mechanic with all the equipment and skills.
Second? Well, better visuals, more action, more shooter, worse game.

Mass Effect was about bunch of individuals trying to stop Sarren and uncover what's going on. Without much support every help was more than welcome.
In second you were just a puppet for Illusive Man. He told you mostly what to do, who to recruit, and the whole "only he can save the universe" was pure bullsh!t.

Actually I'm just a RPG junkie. I have ME1&2, Fable1&2, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia,
Infinite Undiscovery, Records of Agarest War, Star Ocean TLH(PS3), and more RPGs like games for my PSP,PC, and DSi.

Games are never as good as they are the first time you play them. But that doesn't mean that they are bad the second time around^^

gamingisnotacrime5562d ago

for me replaying a great game allows me to appreciate some details i might have missed on my first playthrough. Uncharted 1 never ceased to amaze me even after the 10th time i beat it :)

XANDEO5562d ago

i sorta agree, i preferd mass effect 2 loads more on my 2nd playthrough, but there was a big gap between playthroughs (bout 10 months)

Megaton5562d ago

Your memory is faulty, ME1 is awesome. Better than ME2.

ct035562d ago

Yup, finished ME1 three times, ME2 once. Both games will get another playthrough before ME3 hits. ME2 is good, ME1 is near-perfect.

pain777pas5562d ago

Are you guys serious? Story wise I too cannot deny that there are elements that are superior in ME1 than ME2. However, gameplay really does matter. Everything that you wanted to do in combat in ME1 can be done in ME2. ME2 is actually a really fun game that I enjoy playing. ME1 is tough to go back to. The gameplay is stiff. ME2s story is not as focussed as ME1. There is more of a sense of discovery and tons of backstory meeting all the races and the ongoing antagonist was in the forefront with a bad guy that you could pinpoint, had a voice, and had henchman (or woman). After PLAYING 2 I cannot go back to ME1 even on PC. The game plays really well now. ME1 is a chore and too much is left to the weapon stats and not my actual skill. ME2 is a better GAME.

I agree. I loved ME1 when it was released, but after playing through ME2 three times - hell even just after the first time - I think it would be very difficult for me to go back to ME1.
(Just in case it matters, I played the PC version of both - although my first playthrough of ME1 back when it was released was on XBox 360.)

Personally I'm among those who actually didn't feel the story, missions and dialogue were better in ME1 - I would probably rate the two games about evenly in those aspects, ME2 perhaps a bit higher, particularly in dialogue - but the gameplay in ME2 was miles ahead of the initial awkward attempt at marrying RPG and shooter mechanics in ME1.

ME2 is probably in my top three RPGs of all times (I first got hooked on the genre around a decade ago with games like BG 1+2, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1+2 etc.) - ME1 some places further down the list.

Kalowest5562d ago

Sorry I'm more of a the Story, Side-quest, and looting type of person. "However, gameplay really does matter" Just taking cover and gun enemies down, and your powers were useless in that game. ME1 was more of a challenging, and your powers meant something. ME2 felt like a chore.

Megaton5561d ago

I played ME2 before I played ME1. I like ME1 more. ME2 just streamlined the game to death.

Syaz15562d ago (Edited 5562d ago )

what are you talking about? i'm still playing me1 since 2008, and that's a remarkable achievement for a game with above average gameplay.

edit: not reffering to anyone's comments btw.

kasser5562d ago

Both are good. The only difference is that ME2 feels "more focused" than ME1 which tried to include more features but the developers could not perfect it.

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno194d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos194d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg194d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb194d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum194d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

Good games but no Phantasy Star?

merlox1089d ago

Why do people forget Phantasy Star? That is one of my favorite RPG series. Another ther good but overlooked series is ,Y's.

anast1089d ago

ES3 set things off, it's a shame they got greedy and decided to cut corners so the executives could get huge pay days.
