Ready Up: Killzone 3 review

Killzone 2 was one of a few titles which maintained my unsteady relationship with my Playstation 3. From the moment I observed the demo of Killzone 3 at last year’s Eurogamer Expo ( I couldn’t actually get near enough to play it), it became one of my top anticipations for 2011 releases. So did it deliver to my expectations?

I've just beaten the campaign and i don't see what all the hate it about.

It's action packed and gets so intense that you'll sit in awe staring at your ps3 suprised at the power it's bringing to your tv scren.

It's got Full Move Support and Extra support for the Navigation controller, 3D Support, a great Campaign and is a warzone online.

This game deserves no less then 9.5/10 if mw2 & black ops get anything above 6

spunnups5554d ago

I'm currently playing the part of the campaign where you have to defend the stronghold. The action is intense and the gun gameplay has to be the tightest and most immersive i've played in an FPS to date. My only gripe is the voice acting in the story, it's terrible.

Once I finish story mode on Hard I'll be fully addicted to the Multiplayer, most specifically Warzone. With the Retro Packs being added, does that make the map count 10?

killcycle5553d ago

I don't personally think the voice acting is terrible at all, I just think Uncharted's voice acting is SOO good it makes this appear that way.

Have you played UT2? It's crazy

redsquad5553d ago

I had issues with a couple of the Helghast war council members' voices, but it was mainly that they sounded too young for the character design. I thought everyone else did very well, especially the actors behind Jammer & Sev. The Helghast grunts were particularly good too; very menacing.

-Alpha5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

IMO the SP was inferior to K2.

Killzone 2 was much more polished (less bugs), the graphics I thought were also better. I have never seen great lighting in K3 like I have in K2, especially in the Corinth River level

It's evident K3 was rushed in this regard and that with their focus on 3D they weren't able to polish the game as much.

It was also much easier and I didn't feel it had the uniqueness of K2. I beat it on Elite last night with ease.

No epic boss fights like in K2 either, nothing in K3 comes close to the intensity of fighting Radec.

I also thought the characters and story was ironically weaker considering K2's lack of story. With all that was promised about Helghan culture and focusing on storytelling I felt it was a disappointment.

In terms of Multiplayer, while the core gameplay is fun, they took out a LOT of features that generally made K2 so unique.

I'd still give it about an 8/10 for SP, but compared to K2 I didn't enjoy it as much, which IMO was a 9/10

wissam5554d ago

Its seems you are not a big fan of the game. but I will keep what you said in my mind. cause I am yet to pick up this game.

MariaHelFutura5554d ago

I can`t even take this comment seriously.

despair5554d ago

I find the graphics are noticeably better, not immense but there. Maybe its as KZ2 was the benchmark and nothing looked quite like it that the impact of 3 is dampened.

Haven't played too much as I don't have the game(played my cousin's copy) so I don't have an opinion on the story, but I saw parts and played a bit and I think it looks better.

-Alpha5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

I am a fan of the game, I just thought Killzone 2's SP was better and I enjoy the MP, just think that they took a lot out that they shouldn't have and that they approached the situation about spawning wrongly. I enjoy Operations more.

@Maria

Just an opinion. No need to attempt to undermine it just because you disagree with it. I actually can't take your comment seriously either.

MariaHelFutura5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

I respect your opinion Alpha. I just can`t take it seriously, right now. So. I can`t take that you cant take me seriously, seriously.

:)

and really who cares? Seriously.

Whatever. Let`s argue about the next game coming out. Arguing about KZ3 is soooooo last week.

beavis4play5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

alpha - what bugs? i didn't notice any problems. i will agree on the graphics as far as the color - i'd rather have the subdued look of KZ2 - but the jungle level in KZ3 and the stahl weapons facility as well as the level with the green stuff were beautiful. i also loved the look of the helghan soldiers and officers (in the cutscenes).
i didn't get the feeling that the game was rushed AT ALL.]
it was easier - true. i guess you missed GG saying it would be easier because they found that many people didn't finish KZ2 because of the difficulty. i threw my controller more than once trying to get radec! LOL i'm currently playing on elite.....if you beat that with "ease" then i don't know what games are going to challenge you. i don't think elite is impossible; but, it's NOT easy. i will say i wish there were more fights with multiple heavies.

you HAVE to be kidding about the story. KZ2 was more of a bridge game and it's story wasn't nearly as detailed as KZ3. and you aren't intrigued by who it was that got off that escape pod at the end?
my one gripe was the spaceship stuff at the end - i didn't think that fit in to the KZ world.
i really don't like the score system in reviews - but if i was to score the game - i'd give it 9.4 - i really enjoyed it.
anyway - i just wanted to throw some thoughts out there.

dead_eye5554d ago

Story wise and character wise I thought it was better and same with graphics. I agree with it been easier and it defo missed a fight like Radec.

NaiNaiNai5554d ago

you know whats sad.

When the SDF questions Alpha.

LMFAO! XD

You guys really need to know who you are talking to. This guy is in no way downplaying the game, I know the way he speaks.

klapkip5554d ago

Also finished KZ2. Why not mention the positive side on KZ3. Have you played stealth in the jungle and looking at the snow level? Use a jetpack? Playing with the WASP?
Have you played in 3D, I do....amazing.

Its a brilliant piece of game, period.
What killcycle says about other games like mw2 and blackops deserve more. Game deserves a big 9,5

P_Bomb5554d ago (Edited 5554d ago )

@Alpha

I disagree with some points.

I find KZ3 more polished, the polish extending to such things as controls (deadzone), AI partner healing and environmental variety. Not just shades of rust. You mention the lighting in Corinth, but on the other I found the smoke and particle effects more pronounced in KZ3 (snow in Stahl, fog/smoke to end Kaznan).

Point two about the 3D you have no empirical evidence to support your claim.

I'm half way through Elite now and have had some problems with one hit deaths and cave flanks in Stahl Arms with jetpack guys and grenade flushes. Maybe you're an FPS uber-pro, but that doesn't mean it's too easy for everyone else.

MAWLR > Radec imo. Radec part was only hard because of the constantly respawning troops before him. He himself wasn't that epic. He goes invisible, you run, he spawns on your heels, turn 'n' shoot, repeat. Not something you showcase to friends as epic. MAWLR is as it's multi-tiered and cinematic like Kronos in GOW3.

Narville had no personality in KZ2, Rico was one dimensional. Both charachters were improved in KZ3 with their own conflict and Rico leading his own Rat Pack. Sev showed more nuance, Stahl was great as a prick.

What features did KZ3 remove from multiplayer that made it unique? Bold claims, no examples. Custom games are getting a patch. All I miss otherwise are the detailed stat menus (W/L ratio and not just K/D). The controls, perks, weapons, respawn times, jetpacks/mechs, even the 2 remixed KZ2 maps I find to be improvements. No ridiculous boost-only trophies either.

To each his own I guess. *shrugs*

killcycle5553d ago

I disagree, I think the game on Elite was MUCH harder then 2.

MAJ0R5554d ago

you have to understand that KZ3 isn't as big as COD games and doesn't have as much hype, no matter how much better it may be COD games will get 9s and 10s until craptivision destroys it just like guitar hero

Rageanitus5554d ago

Its because its a PS3 exclusive and the media loves the xbox... just look at GT5.... it has SO much more than Forza in terms of content yet they nit pick every bad aspect of the game making it seem worse than the competiton when it really isnt lol.

Just look at halo it got such high ratings and imo it is as medicore a game can get.

trancefreak5554d ago

Right now I'm playing on elite. The thing I noticed is Rico will take a step back but help. Also the isa soldiers help bunker down with you tacticilly. Pretty insane on elite though. I really like how you need strategy + some good aiming/shooting ownge.

trainsinrdr5554d ago

i just played the demo and the graphics are the same as kz2 and the jetpacks are rubbish why cant they put something like leo da vinci's flying machine in it now that would be fun

VenomProject5554d ago

Or maybe, just maybe, GG could throw in dinosaurs for Killzone 4! We could ride them and launch rockets from their backs!

trainsinrdr5554d ago

OMG OMG OMG just awesome o and they have to be special incendiary electric rockets o and the dinosaurs have to be made of steel and have laser eyes xD

spunnups5554d ago

I think the graphics are a noticeable upgrade, especially how they hold up even through all this chaos. The draw distance is impressive as well.

ArchangelMike5554d ago

I have no idea what all the hate is about when it comes to KZ3, it is an awesome game.PERIOD. Play it with the sharpshooter, and you'll feel like you've enlisted with the UCA.

Best all round FPS experience Yet!

I dont think a 7 means he hated it.

Report: Sony Is Turning Its Back on Porting PlayStation Games to PC

Sony is said to be pulling back on releasing PlayStation games on PC, and this starts with Ghost of Yotei and Saros.

Elda69d ago

If true then the PC elitists will no longer be saying..."I'll wait to play it on PC where it'll play best" I'm guessing the money Sony spends porting & profiting from PC isn't worth it. Making PS first party solely exclusive again to their consoles will make their consoles more relevant to buy especially if their output of first party titles are good.

Outside_ofthe_Box69d ago

A certain spamtastic account will not be pleased if this is true.

This is another basic logic scenario. We've seen both extremes playing out right now. Would you rather be in Xbox's or Nintendo's position right now? Sony already had a working formula, stick to it.

fr0sty69d ago

Sony released games on PC to try to make a few extra bucks... Valve (and possibly MS, if the new Xbox ever sees the light of day) attempted to use this to allow you to play PlayStation games on other consoles, so instead of making Sony a few extra bucks, it's now costing them good money... so this only makes sense.

CrashMania69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

All those players who claim they were happy to wait an eternity for every game, will now suddenly be saying all those games are/will be crap and they were never interested.

Elda69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

Of course they will...lol. It looks like they'll never get to play PS exclusive games or they'll give in & buy a PS.

Believe it or not, some people will just never play Playstation games if the don't come to PC. They're completely fine with that.

InUrFoxHole69d ago

Sounds like you're letting a small section of gamers fuel your fanboy war. Good luck with that 👏

-Foxtrot68d ago

They are already doing this on some of the subreddits. Now they either never cared for their games or calling Sony selfish. However no one bats an eyelid at Nintendo sticking to console exclusive since forever

much like every MS released game when they eventually come to PS5 and somehow are magically good (Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones, Avowed, etc)

More like people were realizing what wasn't worth it was buying a PS5 to play games that eventually came to another platform. The constant excuses the entire gen to try to lessen the butt hurt y'all were feeling. Let's be for real here ladies and gents y'all were bothered by the fact most of these games were making their way to PC and judging by the replies y'all STILL butthurt. Trying to make it sound like waiting 6 months to a year was the worst thing when most people don't care cause why should they? Who's in a rush to play mostly SP games when they know they can play it on the platform they prefer? How exactly does it hurt y'all personally? Besides getting your pride hurt cause SONY making you look childish for being so loyal to a brand?

If they're pulling support it's because they know that long term they can't convince people to buy a PS if they can get their games on PC. It's that simple. You really think having an extra platform to gain more profit from somehow hurts them financially? Nah, it's cause they can't convince people to throw another 600-700 bucks at new hardware when their current console gen has barely been taken full advantage of. All the conveniences of a console are on PC now, and you aren't locked into a cycle where the hardware you buy becomes obsolete every 6 years. And the new hardware you buy receives games that are built off software made for the gen before.

Of course people rather buy these games on PC if they already own a PC, makes no sense at all to invest in a console if this continues. And it will infact continue if dev cycles keep taking most of the gen to complete development.

Dexterio69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

@Inverno
"All the conveniences of a console are on PC now."
Including piracy, hackers and cheaters? hmmm...

"Of course people rather buy these games on PC"
Yeah, digital only lol. People buy physicals on consoles, which you rarely have on PC.

You PC guys are really something. Being snobs for no reason at all lol.

derek69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

@Inverno, that was long tearful rant, you feel better now? Lol. Nobody cares about the pc gaming community the orphans of the gaming industry. Even Nvidia has abandoned you, lol. Now go play "pizza making express" on your $10,000 rig, nobody cares pc gamer.

Elda69d ago

It's working for PS seeing their console has been selling fabulously lately. If this is" true" it's evident Sony has decided porting their games to PC is just not worth it.

ravens5269d ago

🤣. Just get a PS if you dont have one. 🤣

Neonridr68d ago

I agree, I have a gaming PC along with a Pro and a Switch 2. I like choosing where I want to play my games. No I won't cry if I HAVE to play a title on my PlayStation. But it's nice having the option to play on my PC if I should choose.

That doesn't make me elitist or a fool in any way. My backlog of games is a country mile long. So if I can't get to a game at launch, getting it at PC down the road for a discount would be a nice option from time to time.

I'm super glad Sony's going back to what they used to do for 30 yrs, porting games to pee zee was a huge mistake just for a couple of millions extra at most and it only tarnished the brand/platform. Bunch of ungrateful ''pee zee elitists'' anyway, always demanding and whining as if Sony is owes them a port. You want a Big Mac? then go to McDonalds and get one, don't expect Taco Bell to sell you one. Common sense, that's how everything works in this world.

Music to my ears. So glad Sony are getting back to their roots with PlayStation. Scaling back on live service garbage and bringing back exclusives that made PlayStation what it is today.

This feels like a bad move by Sony. The economy isn’t strong enough for most people to justify owning both a PC and a PlayStation. I’ve gotten used to playing on PC with a controller anyway. It’s a bit disappointing, but I’m not going back to consoles unless the economy improves significantly.

Michiel198968d ago

I'll wait to play it on PC where it'll play best, just a bit later on an emulator with higher res textures higher fps better controls and for free

z2g68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

It’s bc they don’t sell well. The cost to port vs revenue generated isn’t worth it. This kinda just shows that it’s specifically PlayStation people that love PlayStation exclusives - not necessarily gamers as a whole. That makes sense. Buy into what brands you like. PC has a whole universe of games that aren’t on console. Much bigger market. It doesn’t necessarily mean those interests are interchangeable.

I have a ps5 and play those games on it. But why are you thanking god? What relief does this give you for people getting an old game a year or so later?

RauLeCreuset69d ago

"What relief does this give you for people getting an old game a year or so later?"

There's legitimate reason to find relief in the idea that PS is refocusing on its ecosystem and not jeopardizing it by doubling down on a strategy that could put it in a similar position as the current state of Xbox.

If true, it also relieves us of another "Sony too" deflection people have been arguing as a form of cope for years after years of people arguing that Xbox would surpass PS and Nintendo because those two weren't emulating the strategy of the only one of the big three that has never won a single console generation.

That's the cycle. Xbox has reinvented the wheel and done something the soon to be obsolete PS can't replicate, until it blows up in their faces. Then, it's "Sony too."

SimpleDad69d ago

Because that stupid decision kills consoles.
Everything is an Xbox, and now nothing is an Xbox.

People downloading torrents to play spiderman on their steam deck, and we all knew it.

I'm definitely not buying a Steam Machine for $2k over in scalper land just to play a settings game every time I turn it on.

HellspawnPR198168d ago

@SimpleDad not if done correctly. It killed Xbox because putting games day 1 on GamePass is cannibilizing their sales.

Amplitude68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Thank God people that have gaming PCs now get to play infinitely inferior versions of two good games per year exclusive to the hyper locked down non-upgradable overpriced subscription-addicted Sony gaming PC.
Still got my PS5, but only for AstroBot, Wolverine, and whatever the next Ratchet game is gonna be. This console cycle has been absolute garbage. Forcing consumers to buy a piece of tech this lame in 2026 after they've shut down all their good studios is brutal. RIP Bluepoint.

maelstromb68d ago

Agreed. This has been an absolute lame-duck Sony console generation. Very few worthwhile titles for overpriced hardware. I'll continue to enjoy the plethora of endless game titles available through Steam and other platforms while Sony-only fans remain stuck in their ecosystem waiting for the next big title to drop once every 2 years. Have fun with that.

Well, we have the data in front of us, don't we. Not to mention how extensive Sony's data's got to be.

They've tried.

Huge revenue wasn't generated (don't get me wrong - they did make billions, but you get it), Steam got a cut, Xbox got a cut, PS5 is trailing ~2 million units behind PS4.

The paycheck for, but also potential harm to the remaining years of PS5 and the release of PS6, just wasn't it.

It's absolutely logical if true.

And people shouldn't forget Sony'd simply return to the strategy they've been following for 4/5 of Playstation's history.

69d ago Replies(4)
wesnytsfs68d ago

Good luck with that, Sony wa losing money on their AAA exclusives since their ecosystem was not generating enough to revenue to cover their costs. Just another stupid move almsot as dumb as their live service push.

dveio68d ago

You think Sony made losses with God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of, Horizon or Spiderman?

Huh.

wesnytsfs68d ago

@dveio, I hope those games made money they were good games. Horizon Forbidden West cost $212 million, while The Last of Us Part II cost $220 million, excluding marketing. Much rather see more platforms instead of them raising prices to cover the game since its lmited to one specific console.

Reaper22_69d ago

I call BS. Too much money to lose.

MDTunkown69d ago

Goal of exclusives is to sell the console and not the game

Reaper22_69d ago

Lol.. that makes no sense. That logic puts all publishers and developers out of business. The majority of people buy games on the system they prefer. Exclusives are only a tiny fraction of games sold. Selling 15 million games beats selling 2 million consoles.Consoles stagnate but games dont. How is sony trying to sell their console by putting God of War on PC? The overall goal is to make money and the games keep the money coming. The majority of the time consoles are sold for a loss. And If it is making money its not that much. Especially in the first few years after release. All the enjoyment is coming from experiencing the game.

wesnytsfs68d ago

Consoles do not make money until late in their lives games make the money.

ThePacemaker69d ago

All this BS as you say contributes just 1.5% to PlayStation’s total revenue

Reaper22_68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Actually its closer to 4%. Playstation has grossed over 1.5 billion on steam to date. So its not BS. At the end of the day, its not about what you want. They are going to do what they need to in order to increase profits. Did they ask you for permission before they shut down Bluepoint studios? No.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro68d ago

What do you expect releasing a game 2 years late??

BlaqMagiq169d ago (Edited 69d ago )

We get it. You hate PS is no longer putting their exclusives on PC while your favorite platform is giving theirs away to PC and other platforms.

Reaper22_68d ago

Thats ignorant. First of all nothing has been confirmed. I really dont care where sony put their games because I own a ps5 and a pc. So theres no hate. And for the record, I dont have a favorite platform but I do have a preference. There is a difference.

BlaqMagiq168d ago

Everything you said is BS. If you didn't care where they put their games you would've never made this comment. And you've made it clear you CLEARLY have a favorite platform. Just because you own a ps5 and pc doesn't negate that.

Reaper22_68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Can you confirm that they are no longer putting their games on PC? If you cant then your whole argument is just nonsense. I dont care where they put their games. Part of the reason is i dont like all their games. Just like it dont like all games.on other platforms. I called BS on this report because its not based on facts to back it up. Maybe you care a little too much about it which imo is a waste of time. LIke I said before its not about you want. They dont need our permission to do anything. So if they do stop putting games.on PC it wont be because that what playstation fanboys want. It will be for business reasons. Thats why I said its BS. Why would they turn down opportunities to make money. For the record, games are developed on dev kits which are basically PC anyway. They only have to gain.

3rd Horizon Is Expected To Be A Long Ways Off, Majority Of Guerrilla Is Working On Hunters Gathering

The third mainline Horizon is expected to be a long ways off, as a majority of Guerrilla Games is working on Hunters Gathering.

twistedvoxel.com
-Foxtrot94d ago

What a waste of their time, it would be a lot different if it was a small team of theirs helping an external studio or something but to have this be one of the teams main games is just overall sad to hear.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we need Horizon 3 right now as I don't think there's much they could really do to make it stand out from Horizon II but I wanted to see a new IP from them to give the Horizon franchise some breathing space so when we did get Horizon 3 it would feel more fresh. Horizon II was a good game but you could tell when playing that it was just a sequel which felt like the main appeal was just being a more super refined version with a lot of quality of life improvements compared to the first game, even then it felt it was struggling at times to really stand out, maybe it was because it was a PS4/PS5 cross play title and didn't get to take advantage of the PS5 new tech who knows.

If this game flops, it's just going to give people more of an excuse online to hate on the franchise even more and might end up hurting the anticipation for Horizon 3. They were better off doing a new IP or a reboot of Killzone

JEECE92d ago

Exactly. Sony seems to be getting things exactly wrong with Horizon. It's the type of IP that needs to disappear for a few years and then come back with a third game that really feels like an evolution from 2, rather than just an iterative sequel, like 2 was from 1. It isn't the type of franchise that is going to support a ton of spinoffs.

Sircolby4592d ago (Edited 92d ago )

After watching that trailer...the chances of it flopping are pretty high. That trailer did not look good. Disappointing because I actually enjoy the Horizon series, but Hunters Gathering looks like it will miss the mark.

Eonjay92d ago

For the love of God... don't believe this. This whole story is engagement farming and is based on a one word tweet without context. The obsession with every whim of Jason Scherer is stupid.

Profchaos92d ago

The way Sony is trying to Disneyfy horizon is already hurting any interest I have in the franchise

I'm just hired of the whole thing now honestly it feels oversaturated even though we only have two mainline games

We have two live service games, a VR game a movie coming and remasters of the first game

I'm over it

Honestly, I can't say I mind this. Forbidden West was a good game but it didn't exactly leave me desperate for it's successor.

neutralgamer199292d ago

Horizon 3 will most likely be a launch window title for PS6

isarai_lee92d ago

Well I loved the first game, and while i acknowledge how much of a step up the second game, was it's insane! I absolutely did not like the second game from a gameplay standpoint. It seemed woefully unbalanced and a shocking amount of glitches that I'm surprised review sites did not report on.

But this series is a rare case of "just because it sells gangbusters, doesn't mean it's popular" like yes the mainline series sells a ton, but you wouldn't know looking at how it has failed to enter pop culture like God of War has. So trying to sell things by throwing it's name around just isn't going to work, the flop that was the lego game was proof enough of that, and this may be exhibit B for the same case.

I hope im wrong, i mean who doesn't want more fun games, but i just don't see it, and i hope their next game is a new IP cause otherwise it's gotta be so good it cleanses my pallet of the bad taste forbidden west left in my mouth

MayorPauline92d ago

Indeed. I glitched in between obstructions on more than one occasion. I also remember gliding for an extended period of time and the game abruptly blacked out for a few seconds. I thought it crashed but it came back on. That was on the PS4 version of the game.

isarai_lee92d ago

More than a few occasions i was getting trapped inside geometry and would have to fast travel or die to eacape, also had like 4 campfires i could not use because it would spawn me in the ground. Also has an issue where the longer my play session the worse the framerate would get till it was no bs like 3fps and i would have to restart the application which kinda sucks when you're in the middle of a loooong fight mid mission. I actually stopped playing for a few weeks until that specific problem got patched. This was all on the ps5 version for me

raWfodog92d ago

I had an excellent experience with Forbidden West because I didn’t play it until the complete edition released a year and half after the original release date. I’ve learned a long time that it’s best to wait until these big games are patched up because they almost always have bugs and glitches when they first release.

DivineHand12592d ago

I am confused. What was wrong with the Horizon 2 gameplay?

The focus of the game was to use the appropriate weapons to detatch craftable parts before killing the machine. This added a lot of challenge to the fights. They also revamped the melee system to allow alloy to do combos and special abilities were added that applied buffs.

Can you provide examples?

Maybe they rebalanced it after the fact but playing through it at launch and the few months that followed, if you werent using corrosion/acid in the late game, you were getting your a$$ handed to you ESPECIALLY with the final boss fight. Literally had to load a previous save because i didn't have any major corrosion weapons for the final fight, and it wasn't an isolated incident as lots of people were online having the same experience. Also ran into more than a few enemies that just seemed to have crazy overpowered attacks for literally every situation like the Babboons and the shellsnappers, ESPECIALLY the shellsnappers that just spam the leap attack then burrow into the ground constantly giving little to no opportunity to target weak points.

The mellee ststem was fine except a few melee pit challenges, those got real stupid near the end getting one shot before i could even move after the timer.

I think the best way of looking at it is Sony seems to want to force the success as quick as possible rather than letting it happen naturally over a longer period of time.

God of War has been nurtured for a long time and even when the series started to get stale and over done (there was far too many games coming out) they paused long enough to softboot it with the 2018 God of War that lifted it straight back to the top.

Horizon hasn't been on that journey and even if you compare it to Killzone, a franchise where even by the release of Shadow Fall started to feel a little stale, has had more content (not just games) thrown out in 9 years since the first release compared to what Killzone had in the same period, Shadow Fall being the last game released in its 9th year.

It's weird to think about, but the gap between God of War: Ascension and the 2018 Reboot was basically the same as the gap between the first two Horizon games (five years). I guess the fact that most people (including me) stopped at GOW 3 made it seem longer.

Yeah there's a weird phenomenon where sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place not because they are amazing and phenomenal successes in every aspect sometimes something needs to be just good enough

Horizon to me feels like the franchise especially 2that's just good enough in most regards Nd it came early in the ps5s life but you don't see a cult following like you do mass effect or the last of us most people are like ok cool that was fun enough and leave it at that

I actually think we will see a massive drop off for 3 because people will feel like it's crossed the bridge to being to much

"sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place"

In a way it feels like that is true for Horizon (particularly the second one), but the series is also notorious for launching near major competition. The first one launched right before BOTW (different platform, but it still resulted in a ton of comparisons), and the second one launched at almost the same time as Elden Ring.

PlayStation Studios Could Embrace Decima Engine As Guerrilla Expands Developer Support

Some of Sony's first-party PlayStation Studios may be developing their future titles using Guerrilla Games' Decima engine.

Might be for studios which were using older engines or UE4 like Bend Studio.
Sony's big 5 studios' engines are all unique to some degree and I want it stay that way for future new games.
Remakes can be done using Decima if required like Bloodborne or Uncharted 1.
Imagine From Software embracing Decima for future titles.
But then again Until Dawn Remake was done using UE5, when the original was made using Decima.

VersusDMC484d ago

Maybe ease of use is what made it a better choice. And it was already tested by a another studio with kojima productions having shipped death stranding on Decima.

Eonjay484d ago

I wonder if this is for studios beyond SIE and KP. Decima has also proven itself of platforms beyond PS5 so I wonder how comfortable they would be with allowing non first party use it wherever?

Minute Man 721484d ago

They should use the Ready at Dawn engine

DarXyde484d ago

That engine is mighty impressive, even by today's standards. The cloth simulation and gun animations are absolutely chef's kiss.

But I think it's one of those very intensive engines that will choke the hell out of the hardware and you're looking at a short and linear but very detailed experience. More or less what you get from a UE5 game that really forces the hardware (e.g., Hell blade II).

For that reason, Naughty Dog's engine is probably more practical: still extremely detailed (albeit less so) but allows for a more wide-linear experience and you're still left in awe.

But if we're going open world, absolutely Decima.

porkChop484d ago

They don't own that engine, and Ready at Dawn doesn't even exist anymore.

anast484d ago

They already have embraced it along with some other engines.

They need to put that Decima engine to work for Killzone 5 or a remake of Killzone 2.

anast484d ago

This would be a cool gift to the fans.

jjb1981484d ago

I'm a huge Killzone 2 fan. It's my favorite shooter of all time and I wish they'd revive the IP. I know a remake of KZ2 would do very well. My original PSN friends I met were on KZ2 and and we formed a clan. I've been itching to get that 3 star badge. Only made it to 2-star.

Eonjay484d ago

Fun fact Decima IS the evolved version of the Killzone engine.

OlderGamer17484d ago

Noppe, its build from the ground up....

CrimsonIdol484d ago

A Killzone 2 remake where the controls are actually responsive could be cool.

mike32UK484d ago

The character has weight, it was a design choice which many people happened to like. You're probably too used to the floaty controls of COD

CrimsonIdol483d ago (Edited 483d ago )

yeah I remember that argument too. Then how that argument went away when they fixed it for the sequel. having massive input delay before anything happens due to technical issues isn't an artistic choice. It's good copium though

RaiderNation484d ago

Rather than a KZ2 remake, I'd rather see them do a KZ reboot! If they're going to do a remake, I'd rather see a PS5 remake of KZ Mercenary! Hands down one of the best Vita games and the 2nd best Killzone game in the series (after KZ2).
