Killzone 3 Review - Digital Trends

What really makes Killzone 3 worth the lofty game of the year mentions is the multiplayer that comes with it. Both the multiplayer and the campaign are solid offerings on their own, and together they make for an exceptional package. Throw in the fact that the game is amazing to look at and provides a suitably epic feel at times, and Killzone 3 is a must own for FPS fans on the PS3.

I'm loving the single player campaign right now. Later on, after I'm done with SP, I'll hop onto the great multiplayer, but I'm not gonna be on that too much. I'm kinda burnt out on Multiplayer, to be honest, and that goes for every game. But for anyone on the fence for Killzone 3, or thinking of buying a PS3 just for KZ3, there's no need to hesitate--The game is worth the purchase, and if you've yet to buy yourself a PS3, it's worth that purchase too. The immersion of the grittiness of the warfare is just immense and incredible. It feels like the TRUE WAFARE SIMULATOR. lol (GT pun)

PSN: blumatt
XBL: Blu Matt

Disagrees would be more welcome with an explanation as to why you disagreed. Just because I enjoy my PS3 isn't a good excuse. lol :)

@ SuicideShaun Yeah, there are some inconsistencies with the pacing, but it's still definitely better than CoD single player. lol CoD is all over-the-top action from beginning to end with ridiculous storylines and events, so I definitely liked Killzone 3 better than any CoD game.

SuicideShaun5564d ago

I disliked the campaign. I think they need to work out their stories better. They are too jumbled around in killzone.

OC_MurphysLaw5564d ago

@blumatt, totally disagree on the story being better than any CoD game. This story is so generic its not even funny, and the lack of originality of the Helghast really kills the SP for me. I mean come on, these space nazi's are so over the top that it is uttlerly ridiculous. I mean they copied the uniforms and the history of Germany on a whole..ok fine, but did they need to copy the salute too? And when was the last time you ever saw a leader of a country / planet / population giving direct orders to all the troops? (kill the ISA!) So over the top... Maybe that is what you like, but for me its been a turn off on the SP side.

And lets not forget about the curious self healing mechs. I mean I get that you have the self healing damage as a foot soilder... its a mechanic we see common in most shooters these days. Take damage, hide in cover....get better. But, I have never seen that mechanic used for a vehicle sequence. I jumped into the first mech sequence and was in a fairly hairy fire fight and taking a beating. Cracks in my windshield were all over and sparks were coming out too. It was a nice effect telling me I was in danger of being destroyed. So I got catious and didnt advance for a bit trying think of a better route. Any guess as to what happens when you stop and hide in your damaged mech? Yep you guessed it...magically repairing glass and disappearing sparks. Within 30 secs of resting my mech was back to new...no cracks in the windshields anymore, no sparks. Completely ruined the mech moments for me as I now know I can just hide and "heal" in my mech to finish a fight.

Now all this doesn't mean the game is bad...its still good but this game doesn't even scratch GOTY contention for me. It will be right there for best graphics no doubt as it is top of the food chain there. But everything else about this game is good, not great.

iistuii5564d ago

In just over five and a half hours, and I'm pretty crap on the PS3 controller due to it being a lot more touchy than the 360 one. Its just an average shooter and without the graphics it wouldn't have even got a 7. iistuii, PSN tag, check out my trophies, not a fanboy, just saying its pretty average, disappointed is what I felt at the end of the game.

Thoreau5563d ago

go and play cod then. from reading your post, it seems that you have read other peoples post and reviews, thus formulating a lame theory for the game, i highly doubt you played kz3.

BattleAxe5563d ago

I went to Metacritic to check out where this game is sitting. Right now Metacritic has the Meta Score set at 84, but when I added up all the scores and divided them, I got 85.6 which would obviously get bumped up to 86. Looks like Metacritic is up to their old crap again.

clrlite5563d ago

I try not to mention the M word anymore. From now on it's gamerankings.com. Meta has one review on there as a 67, but the game actually got a B from that site.

Nice to see another good review score for KZ3 though. This game is huge and is going to continue to rise in popularity. As long as they don't start pumping them out every yaer, I will continue to support the franchise.

beavis4play5563d ago

blumatt - i'm with you buddy -i really liked the game. the only thing i didn't care for was the spaceship stuff at the end - it didn't seem like it belonged in KZ game - hey! do you think that was stahl getting out of the pod at the end?......or could it be visari???

Dlacy13g - it's a game - not real life. you can take ANY FPS and pick it apart the way you're doing here. also, why do you accept self-healing foot soldiers but not mechs? that's not consistent thought. like i said - these are GAMES. as far as your ripping the story - i couldn't disagree more. i liked it. me and at least a dozen others on the site have been sending PMs back and forth discussing cutscenes from end of KZ2 and beginning of KZ3 because we're thinking it could be visari getting out of the pod at the end. and you didn't like the part right before stahl kills orlock where he tells him again " you are SO predictable"??? i thought it was great how they used the 6 months before/after stuff in the cutscenes. i liked the back and forth arguements of stahl and orlock. you weren't curioius at visaris daughters disgust at her "father" greeting her? you aren't wondering who got out of the pod at the end?...... and these are just examples. i don't think you paid much attention to the cutscenes at all.
also, no- you must not know ANY history to think nazi germany is a copy of helghan. that's laughable. for example, the rise of the nazis in the 1930's was due to economic conditions in germany and what had happened to that country right after WWI. economics and a previous war are not factors in the helghast aggression at all......and this is just 1 example. i can give more if you want. i guess my advice to you is not to play any more of the KZ games - you obviously seem to only want to try and find fault.
by the way - i'd love to know what FPS story you like or what FPS you like - because if you look at those games with the magnifying glass you use on KZ3, then you'll find a whole lot of faults in those games too........like i said at the start - THEY'RE GAMES - not real life.

iistuii - how many times are you going to post your "i beat the game in 5 hours" comment? i've lost track how many times i've seen it. and as i've said before in response - it took me 10 hours the first time through on "trooper". i'm currently playing on elite.
these "i beat the game in 4-6 hour" posts seem to be something that has really taken off in the last couple of years. it happens with the release of every big game and i'm kind of tired reading them. it's like a few people seem to think if they say it; then, the game is only that long - and that's just not true.
and btw - i've read you love BS. yet that game has last-gen graphics, repetitive gameplay, juvenile dialogue (along with terrible voice-overs) and a non-existent storyline - the game couldn't be any cheesier.......yet you have posted you love that game. you've got very strange tastes in games.

OC_MurphysLaw5563d ago

@beavis4play I totally agree its a game, and as I said in the end of my comment I think its a good game, just not GOTY like so many others would have you believe.

As for the History lesson... Check your own facts. Guerilla already went on record stating that they modeled a bit of the Helghan after the Nazi's. If you can't see that then you yourself are being a bit naive.

A bit of Helghan history as I know it to be:

"Following the First Extrasolar War, the Helghan Corporation was dismantled and all of its assets seized by the UCN. Vekta, once a planetary holding of the now-defunct Helghan Corporation, was turned over to direct ISA rule, and colonists from Earth were brought in to supplement Vekta's corporate-affiliated population. However, tensions soon rose between the Earth minority and Helghan corporate majority, resulting in Helghan resistance fighters targeting and killing many Earth-loyal citizens in terrorist attacks. This forced the ISA governor to enact more and more economic sanctions and military punishments on the Helghan-affiliated colonists in retribution for the Helghan persecution of Earth-loyal colonists. In the face of brutal draconian laws and punishments, the Helghan loyalists eventually stopped their persecution of Earth-loyal colonists.

By 2220, all Helghan corporate colonists had chosen voluntary relocation to planet Helghan, where years of hardship awaited them. The Helghan settlements recreated the former Helghan Authority to rule over all affairs on Helghan, but this rule was often inefficient and corrupt. Their Helghan colonists' human bodies were also mutated by the harsh environment of Helghan, resulting in most of the first generation dying only a short while after they arrived in the system. However, by 2305, future generations had evolved an increased biological resistance to the harsh atmospheric conditions, some even discarding the common breathing masks that many colonists still relied upon.

In 2330, Helghan was hit by a major economic depression, allowing Scolar Visari to rise to power. In 2347 Visari staged a successful coup against the ruling Helghan Administration, which declared him the "Autarch". He created the more sophisticated Helghast ideology based on Helghan superiority. He re-established hostilities with the ISA in his bid to retake Vekta and exact revenge on the UCN, and this conflict is now known as the Second Extrasolar War.

During the War, the Helghast tried to invade Vekta but the invasion failed. The ISA then launched a retaliatory invasion against Helghan and assaulted the planet by establishing a beachhead at Phyrrus in bid to conquer the capital city, detain Scolar Visari, and bring a swift end to the war. During the first hours of D-Day for the second wave, the Helghast forces set up a defensive perimeter consisting of Arc Pillars. After the Arc Pillars destroyed Avenger Convoy, which was en route to Visari Palace to capture the Autarch, the ISA decided it was best not to move forward as such an action would only result in more losses."

Now just replace Helghan with Nazi Germany, change the setting to Europe and insert Allies and Hitler as appropriate. Sound vaguely familiar? Kinda like umm... I don't know... Nazi Germany's rise to power and the subsequent WWII

iistuii5563d ago (Edited 5563d ago )

I did finish it in that time and that's with dying a lot. If I didn't keep dying I could have done it in under 5 hours. Now is that acceptable for a top notch game ? . games are getting shorter and shorter, mediocre and yet the price is still the same. I prefer MP on BBC2 , so for me personally I only got it for SP, so 5 hours isn't much for my money. I'm not having a go at just K3, ALL games are getting shorter and it's out of order. As for BS, yeah I do enjoy it for being a bit different, I doubt you've played it and I'm not the only one who prefers it, a lot of reviewers actually prefer it and it out scored K3 on a lot of sites, people like different games, that's life, we don't all have to defend Sony exclusives.

beavis4play5563d ago

iistuii- fact is - you're the only one saying that. fact is - GG/ and other sites have already debunked the reviewer who said they played through in 4.5 hrs.

i'm not wanting to call you a liar......and i won't. but, i don't see how you could possibly do it in 5 hours. of the 20 or so people who i've now been discussing the game with through PMs, the quickest time i've heard is 7 and a half hrs. and that seems quick - but believeable (he said he played on recruit). everyone else falls in the 8 - 10 and a half mark on trooper.

but like i said - even if you have 100 people making your claim and at least 2+ million buy the game? your playthrough isn't representative of the experience.
- i found it to be a top game......great look, production values, gameplay, MP......lots of fun..... and a playtime of at least 8 hours for 99.999999% of the players.

btw - reviews/metacritic should be the LAST thing anyone uses to decide what games are good or not. it's impossible for reviews to be given without some sort of bias for or against the game being reviewed. and metacritic is a joke. the guy who runs it decides what sites will and won't be used for the average.

well, i'm sure i'll be talking to you again when you come out with the "i beat the game in 5 hours" comment for UC3 or resistance3.

Ultraplayerxp5563d ago (Edited 5563d ago )

^^
I think its probable. I finished KZ3 on veteran in under 7 hrs. I could probably shave off a few hours if I played on a lower difficulty and skipped the cutscenes. As for quality, KZ3 is a whole mess of awesome. GG just needs to work on how they pace their games and how they do their cutscenes cause there were inconsistencies at some spots.

*SPOILER*

By the way, you still doing those discussions about the ending of KZ3? I would have loved to have been a part of that. IMO, I think it was Stahl that was inside the pod. The helghast on the ground were definitely looking for his pod. They showed no surprise when the pod door opened, in fact it seemed like they expected to see whoever it was on the other side. Plus they were wearing Stahl Arms uniforms so just put 2 and 2 together and I can confidently say it was Stahl inside.

@ Thoreau. It should be, man. I've played both the Single Player and Multiplayer in KZ3. Add me on PSN, and check my trophies. lol If you don't believe me. I bought it at WalMart the day it came out.

Edit: I'll add you on PSN for some KZ3 MP.

I loved the story in that its a war story featured in space so it shouldn't be taken like something serious. the ending wassssss....the ending.

DanSolo5564d ago

I really got into the beta, and was owning with Move... but for some reason I just can't seem to get Move feeling the same since I got the game. lol it's a bit annoying!

Killzone3___5564d ago

i was really good at the beta , but after buying it i couldn't play it good ....

they changed the move gameplay a little , i know it but i don't know how to say it , didn't play it on the multiplayer yet....

i really really hate when they put something in the campaign and remove it in the multiplayer , why did they remove the slide !!!!! when you run and press L2... why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DanSolo5564d ago

I had the feeling the Move gameplay had changed... but I thought maybe it was just me not having the settings right... although I'm pretty sure I have....

It just feels... wrong now! lol

Also it seems like player health has been increased as well, as I'm having to put twice as many bullets in people to kill them as I had to in the beta!

Killzone3___5564d ago

yea , they don't die , the ammo finish really fast ..... killzone 2 damage was good for me....

they make ps move better in the full game , you just have to get used to it :)....

claterz5564d ago

The multiplayer is getting a bit annoying, it feels way too fast paced. I was hoping for something more similar to BFBC2 especially after all the talk about this being a tactical shooter, I hate to say it but it feels more like CoD..
Also the infiltrator class and sniper class seem to make the multiplayer really unbalanced. No one (apart from me it seems) is using medic or engineer which are more likely to help the team than some sniper worried about his KDR. They need to add more features to the medic and engineer classes so that people actually have a good reason to choose them, going invisible and disguising yourself as an enemy player is much more appealing to most people than being able to revive team mates and repair machines.
Other than the multiplayer I'm very impressed, currently on my second play-through on elite.

achira5563d ago

you should play the bigger maps and in squads. then its far more strategic ! nothing comes close to this game !

claterz5563d ago

I actually had a game last night on concourse with a few friends, it was my first time on that map but we managed to win by working together. I still think they need to make the medic and engineer class a little more appealing though, or at least give 'em some decent guns to use.

Killzone3___5564d ago

which map in the multiplayer have jets ?.. i can't find one , anyone tell me ? ..
i don't like what they did, they only put the exo and the jets on one map ......

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic542d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23542d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1542d ago (Edited 542d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger533d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1109d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1109d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1108d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491108d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381109d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1109d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1109d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381109d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1109d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761108d ago

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1108d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1109d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1109d ago (Edited 1109d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1108d ago

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1859d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1859d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1859d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1859d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1859d ago
Vegamyster1859d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1859d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1859d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1859d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1859d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
