Is iOS killing handheld gaming?

GameSnark writes:"We could be close to the point where consumers like you and I refuse to pay more than £5 for a game on any handheld system meaning that the Nintendo 3DS and Sony's NGP (PSP2) will be those respective companies last handhelds. Do we really want to live in a world where immersive, deep and meaningful games only exist on home consoles because Apple bred a generation of penny-pinching gamers?"

everything seems to be killing gaming now a day ?

Optical_Matrix5560d ago

Yeah but theres a HUGE quality difference between what I was seeing in those NGP tech demo's, and full iOS games. I'd easily fork out £30 for say Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker...it's up there with most console games in terms of sheer quality.

iOS gaming is basically a gateway for non-gamers to get into gaming

Raendom5560d ago

Totally agree and you couldn't have picked a better example.

cochise3135560d ago

This is laughable, I'd glady pay to play Uncharted, Killzone, and MGS on the go. I wouldn't mind paying to take my psn where ever i go.

I certainly play games on my iPod Touch and iPad alot more than I play games on my psp or dsi. People say that these ios devices only have games thats good to play for 5 minutes to pass time. I disagree, I have played games that I played for hours some times like World of Goo, battlefield bad company, angry birds, light cycle, and a bunch more. I will be getting the 3DS and NGP though.

I do enjoy playing pokemon on the Nintendo handhelds and a few games for the Sony handhelds. Its just with the prices the ios appstore has cant be beat. I really hope sony has some games on the ngp psn appstore for a reasable price. I dont like paying $15+ for a digital download game

kenmid5560d ago

IOS is not killing gaming, Handheld pricing is killing gaming. I have just as fun paying $1 for game then paying 30 bucks for psp game.

pr0npwn3rer5560d ago

Amen to that, although I have just as fun using cydia.hackulo.us .. >_>

I used to have mine jailbroken, but after my 2nd Gen iPod Touch decided that its battery is gonna be stupid and last a few hours at max, I removed the jailbreak. And it was laggy. I'm just gonna wait for this years iPod to come out before I get another one.

You're being silly if you expect developers to spend millions developing a game just to practically give it away for $1-$5.

As Reggie from Nintendo was quoted in this article:

“I actually think one of the biggest risks today in our gaming industry are these inexpensive games that are, candidly, disposable from a consumer standpoint, ” he told Game Trailer TV. He added that such games create a “mentality for the consumer that a piece of gaming content should only be $2.”

This is exactly the mentality you're displaying.

In my opinion, both mini mobile device games and major games can coexist.

Their not spending "millions" on iOS games and developers make a much bigger profit making simplier games than handhelds

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle15d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg17d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
