Dead Island's trailer is uninformative

The Dead Island trailer is a brilliant piece of filmmaking, but it tells us absolutely nothing about the game. Should we be more critical in our reactions to this sort of marketing?

AZRockslide5557d ago

Not only is this a well written article, but I agree with it whole-heartedly. I am amazed at how taken everyone is with what amounts to a great cinematic trailer.

Sadie21005557d ago

I loved that trailer, but I agree...it doesn't give us any indication of anything! Too early to get excited about the game.

nveenio5557d ago

This trailer wasn't intended to inform people. It was intended to get the game on everyone's radar. And it was 100% successful. Not only that, but it just so happened to be the greatest trailer I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, I've been racking my brain to find memory of another trailer that I found as captivating as this one. And that's what teaser trailers do--they get you pumped about what "could" be. Movies do it all the time, and no one cares. This article is just another person going against the flow in an effort to stand out.

despair5557d ago

I actually didn't like the trailer that much, I think the idea of the game is a bit interesting, I mean it sounds like a cross between Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead which is cool, but the trailer was really boring and tells us absolutely nothing except maybe we will get to finally kill some children zombies which are very much lacking in games.

RedDead5557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

It gives about as much info as a teaser normally guves, compare it to FF versus Xiii's first trailer.

It gave the setting, character, weapons and basic enemies.

This one also gave the setting, charactera, weapon, basic enemies.

Both gave dreary moods. Setting the tone for the games.

That's all teasers are. Doesn't change the fact that they kick ass.

Jonoc335557d ago

you're all so heartless. the trailer wasn't setting up the features of the game, it was setting up the storyline and depth of the situation.

xAlmostPro5557d ago

Actually it tells you alot.. and if you watch the trailer it gives you a link to the facebook page which tells you more.

The trailer itself shows that you'll be connected to your character, that it will be a struggle to fight off the zombies and not some free-ride journey, it also shows zero guns but only melee weapons, but its main purpose like any game is too build hype & it did followed by the facebook link.

Then from the facebook it tells us that it's an openworld zombie game based on an island resort. The game will have rpg based elements and it also has co-op..

all this info is pretty informative to me.

Journlists these days, do abit of research atleast.

So this guy is criticizingly a trailer for getting public awareness? This is why I don't read any games journalism articles, it's worse than reading comics.

Correction; comics are kinda cool, so I'll just say it's worse than reading manga

despair5557d ago

Many comics and manga are awesome so big disagree from me for that :)

RedDead5557d ago

I bet you never read a manga before right?

If you say it's worse than reading manga, you could say it's worse than reading a book or watching a movie. Or playing a video game.

I dunno were your perception that Manga sux come's from. There was a time when anyone who played videogames was called a nerd. Now look at it.

HolyOrangeCows5557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

"So this guy is criticizingly a trailer for getting public awareness?"

No he's criticizing it for not being informative about what the game is at all.

dead_eye5557d ago

What's wrong with comics. Shame you said that because your comment started off so well

It's a trailer... you know what you're in for. You get weapons and you kill zombies.

Regardless of what kind of game it is if you are into that storyline then you are the audience for this game.

xVeZx5557d ago

looks like theres going with the controversy of killing zombie children and theres going to be hacking and slashing....i remember seeing gameplay footage a long time ago at least 2008-2009 of dead island....

Lamarthedancer5557d ago

"looks like theres going with the controversy of killing zombie children"

I know there just children and it's kind of wrong for wanting them in and killable in games like GTA/SaintsRow/Fallout/Elder Scrolls/Fable but it's just a game, it would add more realism to it.

If you can target a mans head in Fallout 3 using VAT and blow it to bits why can't I do the same thing to Mayor Maccready(annoying prick)in little lamplight.

It's still murder at the end of day no matter who you do it to.

I really hope people don't make it into a big thing for this game. I mean their dead already.

despair5557d ago

damn I hope we get to kill some children zombies, severely lacking in zombie games if you ask me.

GSpartan7775557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

It's just a cinematic trailer. You know trailer is also misleading and uninformative World of Warcraft :O WOW!

Report: New Dead Rising Game in Development, Now Set In Hollywood

A new Dead Rising is in the works, and we have the first plot details on this entry, which takes Frank West back to the action.

scorpio_2049158d ago

Please make it in a theme park or something extravagant like the original mall and casino(but different). DR is all about bigger than life environments, not some realistic gritty town.

isarai158d ago

Ugh, the last one was so trash bro 😔

TheColbertinator158d ago

Hollywood blvd is already full of zombies anyway

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_188d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto187d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay187d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730187d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty188d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602188d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty188d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981188d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts187d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno188d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE187d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai188d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex187d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover187d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator187d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia187d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.
