How Multiplayer is Causing Single Player to Suffer

Remember the old gaming days when online gaming was non existent? From the start of gaming up to the release of the Sega Dreamcast, there was no online. This meant that for the hardcore gamers, single player was all you had. Flash forward to 2011, and there are few games with no multiplayer, and many with lacking single player modes. I am not saying online should be done away with by any means, but I stand proud by saying many games, especially many of the FPS games like Call of Duty, should learn from Uncharted, Dead Space, and Assassin’s Creed.

Well the saying is come for the SP, stay for the MP. I played the hell out of Uncharted 2's MP and Co-Op, but I think I still enjoyed the SP more and replaying the different difficulties, getting all the ingame awards, money, unlocking the DONUT DRAKE FTW, and collecting those treasures put me at about 30hours in the SP alone.

Games like COD are sheep bait and those people 9 times out of ten, only come for the multiplayer. Most of the time they never touch the story, and whats even sadder is many COD freaks even skip cool treats like Zombies for laggy online head to head matches.

I have only known of one person I hangout with that plays COD who knew Zork was in the game. That is how one tracked they are for the damn Multiplayer.

Blame gamers for being excited for sales numbers, rather than game titles. Blame gamers for being excited over high ratings, rather than game quality. Hope you guys enjoyed playing the same stagnant game over and over again, since all other games are getting canned due to this.

Everyones bitching this gen has caused the world of gaming as we know it right now. Idiots pretended anything under 8 hours isn't worth 60.00 (the same idiots that see a sheep-blockbuster movie for roughly $20.00+ )tickets/food/parking etc... ) Even at $5/an hour or so, games are a steal for value, PLUS you can resell them?????

Gamers want these things to be infinite entertainment for 60.00... and will rate a game lower for having now multiplayer, unless its above and beyond what anyone really does.

SP dev's really suffer with all this, and oh well. Less SP games for more COD map packs for some.

+bubs. Couldn't agree more.

"Idiots pretended anything under 8 hours isn't worth 60.00"

Usually it isn't. Here's the way I see it: if it's under 8 hours while having no mp or co-op and every aspect about it isn't amazing (story, gameplay, lack of bugs, etc), then it's not worth the 65 bucks. If it only excels in say gameplay and graphics, then it's only a 40 dollar game in my eyes. In addition to great graphics and gameplay, it must have either A: A very good story or B: A beautiful art style. By the way, these are purchasing rules for games without mp or co-op.

Now if a game comes out that only has like 2 or 3 good elements (and has a story under 8hrs)but they aren't amazing but DOES have co-op or mp, then it's worth 65

A few examples:
God of War 3 - worth the 65 bucks
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune: Worth the 65 bucks
Vanquish - not worth the 65 bucks
Resident Evil 5 - worth the 65 bucks

That's the way I personally see it.

I have a rule when it comes to multiplayer, always play the single player first.

TBM5621d ago

you know multiplayer doesnt really bother me because i still end up playing more single player then multi. when i do play multiplayer games i generally just play with close friends, and family.

Want SP? get an offline RPG theres plenty there but I miss offline split screen for 4 player. Sure it wasn't the best having a quarter of your TV but my god you could have more fun as only 1 console and tv was needed to have a great time rather than 4 tv, 4 consoles and 4 internet connections not to mention the cost of 4 games to. This is why games like Timesplitters were kings of the ps2 and whats wrong with this generation. BRING BACK SPLIT SCREEN!

Snack_Raccoon5621d ago

Totally, all me and my friend want is good old split screen co-op back.

Killzone 3 is doing this. I like it.

jwk945621d ago

Uncharted 2 had the best of both worlds, hopefully uncharted 3 will keep this and still improve on both aspects.
But does Killzone 3 have guest online? I'm really angry that a lot of ps3 titles don't have guest or dual sign in capabilities with a good portion of their multiplayer titles.

Fallout NV anyone???

Single player PFS/RPG game that you can pour 300+ hours into it and still be finding new things to do.

There are plenty of good SP games out there, it's just that the MP games are getting better at catering to the MP crowd they are aimed at, thus these MP games would have less emphasis on the SP because the majority of the target audience isn't interested in it.

dead space 2 disagrees with this article.

solidsnake2225621d ago

Not true at all. More than once in the article Dead Space 2 was commended for balancing the two modes perfectly. It was even in the N4G description that you must not have read.

Kon5621d ago (Edited 5621d ago )

Yes, but we got some games that SP was more important than the multiplayer part(Dead Space) I'm feeling that devs are focusing even more on the MP aspects of games. I don't like this. It is ok for some games, like BFBC to be MP focused, tbh the game didn't even need a Single Player. But for some games Multiplayer is just unnecessary. Unfortunately Multiplayer is ruining SP. I will be very disappointed if games like Mass Effect 3 have MP.

SonyRep5621d ago

devs concentrate too much on multiplayer why do they do that? single player is a great adition

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing69d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9269d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit69d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing69d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9269d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
