When work began on Final Fantasy VII over 15 years ago, director Yoshinori Kitase didn't have much to go on besides the idea that something "new" was just around the corner. "We started working on FFVII when the PS and Sega Saturn were already out, before the Nintendo 64 was a presence," he said in an interview with Famitsu magazine published this week. "There was a real buzz in the industry that the 3D era was finally here, that the heyday for CG was coming."

Final Fantasy VII 1997 exceeds 15.5 million units sold worldwide as of February 2026, reinforcing its legacy as the series best selling title.
Modern day publisher be like: "Failed to meet sales expectations. Pivoting to live service."
It's an absolute legend of a game. And I honestly really love how the remake trilogy is shaping up so far.

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most iconic video games of all time, with it helping to changed the RPG landscape when it was released in 1997.
If you already own it... There, I saved you the click on a deliberately misleading article.
I bought the game yesterday on steam for $4 because Square Enix is trying to replace it with a version that has no mod support.
Prior to yesterday, I had no idea the game had so many great mods until people started making a fuss out of it.
u get the switch 1 version of the og ff7 for free if you own 7 remake for the switch 2.
lol.
But BG2 didn't emerge in a vacuum, and in a recent chat with Slandered Gaming it emerged that—while we can thank BG2 for a lot of our favourite RPGs since—we have a whole other game to thank for BG2. That'd be Final Fantasy 7, which lit a fire under BG2 director James Ohlen to go all out with the game's structure and companions, per Trent Oster—who worked on the original Baldur's Gate and has since become CEO of Beamdog, the studio behind the BG1 and BG2 Enhanced Editions.
Baldurs Gate 1&2 were my games back in the day on PC. Icewindale and Neverwinter Nights as well
i find it funny when i read 1up's baseline. "where gamers call home" more like "where 'fanboys' call home". and i got 5 points and i am ranked "a Nooblet".
This game was made easily.
Devs contact God. He sends them a hard drive containing one of the greatest games of all time. They release gods work as there own as thoses was God wishes.
Its strange, the first time I saw this game in action at a friend's house I thought the graphics looked really lame. The backgrounds are static after all and the character models are pretty simple. I actually bought the greatest hits version cause I didn't get a playstation until after the dualshock controller was already out.
Once I actually started the game though I was blown away. I had played a lot of rpgs prior to FF7 but there was no real comparison. The soundtrack on FF7 is simply epic, I think that drew me in more than the graphics did (although after watching a few cut scenes I was pretty blown away). Of course the storyline was also stuff of legend, a pure pleasure to see unfold through the game.
I still consider FF7 to be my personal favorite rpg ever, as my avatar advertises.
I don't know how many times in the past 13+ years wonder if I will play ever again a JRPG that will be so "EPIC" so "AWESOME" so "MARVELOUS" so "MANY-OTHER-WORDS-OF-PRAI SE" like FINAL FANTASY VII & Xenogears, in the end never happen.
I sure find some games that they r truly epic at least for me like Suikoden II, Legends of Dragoon & 2-3 others it's not so many because works of art just cant happen all the time (unfortunately for us) but none came even close to make me feel like this 2 games that I truly love and I will never forget for as long I live the experience was so strong.
"If" & I say "if" there is still some1 out there fan of JRPG's that didn't play this 2 games yet then I MUST tell u this "U DONT KNOW WHAT U MISS" find them, play them & see what happen when once every a decade a true piece of Art is born.
