yah, because 6-8hrs doesn't really cut it. 8 should be the very minimum, even on easy, for a shooter campaign imo. i think 10 should be the standard, though.

looking at other genres, like RPGs, i'd say Mass Effect is a great length =)

teething5566d ago (Edited 5566d ago )

Depends on the game.

Bad games FEEL long, GREAT games feel short.

ME2, ME1, Borderlands (and DLC), Fallout 3 (and DLC), AC2 and RDR were all long games that were tons of fun and thus did not feel long. For a long game to feel short it needs to have a cool open world, RPG advancement, and fun game-play. Bioshock was great, but too long for the type of game it was IMHO.

That being said, I like the idea of short games. I am pretty busy, and like the idea of picking up a game and finishing it quickly. Splinter Cell Conviction was a solid game, and it was just right in length.

Part of me would almost rather pay 1/2 the price for a game that was half as long, but was released twice as often.

joydestroy5566d ago

@teething
i completely agree!

Iroquois_Pliskin5566d ago

i dont mind short games as long as they have replayability value. Like do this really hard thing and get stealth camo for example in all Mgs games

PrimordialSoupBase5566d ago

An excellent 6 hour campaign is better than one artificially padded to 8. This really varies on a case by case basis anyway.

gamingdroid5566d ago

It used to be that 8-hour short game WAS SHORT. Now a days, we are talking about 5-hours!

ShabzS5566d ago

i seriously hope he is joking... conviction lasted for less than 6 hrs for me... short length games work only if they are jam packed with quality... one of the first games to get away with short story for me was max payne 2

lil Titan5566d ago

Splinter Cell Creator needs to shut his F@#ing face Uncle F@#ker if its anything single player games are dying to online gaming.

He asks on his blog: "Why is Fallout 3 a one hundred hour experience?" I'm starting to ask myself the same question. If a movie was that long I'd never consider watching it...

BlackTar1875566d ago

cuz fallout is awesome and i could play it for 200hrs.

Agent Smith5566d ago (Edited 5566d ago )

If you do everything in Fallout 3 with all the DLC, then yeah, 100 hours+. But straight through the main quest is only 10 hours.

mandf5566d ago

maybe if you're that good. I would tend to think like 18-20. You could be right though. I put in over 500hrs myself.

Perjoss5566d ago

You're not supposed to play games like fallout in 1 sitting. When someone enjoys the setting in a virtual world they want it to last. I played GTAIV for almost 100 hours and I didn't want the main story to end.

skyward5566d ago

yeah, fair point. But something like Killzone 3, which is more action-movie like, playable for 2/3 sittings doesn't necessarily need to last for 10+ hours... HL2 at 20 hours? Yep, cuz the story and action are so excellent/varied...

Perjoss5566d ago

it all depends on the content really. Look at Halo 1, now I don't mean to downgrade it in any way, but there are some levels in there towards the end that are -very- repetitive, IMO it would have been a much better game without them.

Uncharted 2 on the other hand, if they kept that story and varied action plus varied locations going for 30 hours+ I would never complain. After all why not? the mass effect games are 30 hour ish and they dont get dull (unless you scan too much).

skyward5566d ago

Heh, I've got 12 disagrees - that's a lot of people that would sit through a hundred hour movie... seriously though, I'm not talking about worse value games, just tighter, more focused experiences...

Perjoss5566d ago

If you think about it Band of Brothers is a 10 hour movie, I sit through that regular like. I have no idea how many hours Battlestar's four seasons plus pilot are and it doesn't 'feel' too long at all. The key I guess is moderation, don't try to take in too much at once.

I know that TV series are not the same as movies but they are a better comparison as you are not supposed to play very long games in a single play through.

If he would have said that game are to expensive to make i could have understood the statement.

Games too long ? For the gamer, certainly not.

Flashwave_UK5566d ago

yeah games are to loong for those nooby devs cough* treyarch *cough

disturbing_flame5566d ago

Treyarch can thank Infinity Ward to have designed the engine of COD 4 in 2006/2007, since that time they use their engine they can make average games that sells millions of copy.

Man, some people are just paying 70$ an update (or so called) of an engine of 2007.

Now devs want to sell 70$ games that can also e less longer... That makes sense.

DaThreats5566d ago

People complain games are too short nowadays, and he wants to make them even shorter?
What, he wants 3hr single player games?

Eamon5566d ago

Portal was part of the Orange Box.

flyingmunky5566d ago

I wouldn't doubt it. I'll bet they still want to charge 60 bucks too!

Ubisoft Worked on New Splinter Cell Game That Spiraled Into XDefiant Thanks to Live Service Goals

Ubisoft cancelled the new Splinter Cell project and shifted it into XDefiant, due to live service ambitions.

P_Bomb180d ago

“However, over time, Ubisoft lost interest in the Splinter Cell game and shifted it into something designed to compete with Call of Duty.”

Omfg.

Wonder how many times this kinda thing has happened. The games we lost.

1nsomniac178d ago

How can these people get it so wrong. People really want a new Splinter Cell. Is that because they want a game that plays like another game….. no, it’s because they want a Splinter Cell game that plays like… you guessed it, a splinter cell game. I really cannot comprehend how the people in this industry have become so utterly useless.

CrimsonWing69178d ago (Edited 178d ago )

I hate GaaS so much. Like the whole model, the purpose around why it exists, and how they literally can’t f*cking make a game without it just adds to the mess of it.

BlackCountryBob178d ago

Live service games aren’t for me, though I don’t hate on anyone who decides to try to develop one of these games. However, I really wish some developers would realise not all the games need to be live service.

While I loved the original Splinter Cell trilogy, and Double Agent was good too (everything after that less so), 20 years later it’s bad that Ubisoft hasn’t been able to produce a remake or decent sequel, but I’m even more confused that no other developer has been able to make a decent knock off / spiritual sequel to a series which was so beloved. Surely anyone who tried to Kickstarter a spiritual sequel would blow past their stretch targets in only a few days.

Software_Lover177d ago

Exactly. Just completely remake the first 3 Splinter Cell games with new (better) textures, better lighting, etc etc. Redo some of the cut scenes. Sell them as a trilogy. Make money. It's that simple.

BlackCountryBob177d ago

I can’t work out why they haven’t even done the cheap option of just porting the PS3 era HD Trilogy Collection to PS4, would surely be a licence to print money. While I’d love a proper remaster, especially to add HDR as that would really pop visually with the shadow / light detail, I would settle for being able to play on a modern system (I have a PS3 but the system itself is so sluggish, and the Sixaxis controller so poor, I would always choose a zippy modern port with a PS5 controller).

isarai177d ago

I also hate when a small but super talented studio gambles their livelyhood on a GAAA totle like remedy with firebreak and mucurysteam with spacelords, or united front with triad wars

BlackCountryBob177d ago

If it is a success then I imagine those small companies are now huge companies, but so rare it will happen. What I don’t get is artistically for the development team, once they launch a live service game and it beats the odds to become successful, those devs now are purely focused on how to get more from their players, maintain engagement and find a way to slot in brand partnerships. Have to imagine they would hope the success would mean they have more freedom in future projects, instead they become more creatively unfulfilled than ever

shinXseijuro178d ago

Last good splinter cell was conviction in 08 -09

How??? Would love to hear the pitch.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Trailer

The new trailer for the game based series has been released.

Software_Lover264d ago

.................... Man, I thought it was a game. How can Ubisoft sit on this franchise for so long????

Garethvk264d ago

I think they are hoping this Jumpstart the interest in the franchise and brings new people to the game.

victorMaje264d ago

I clicked so fast I didn’t even notice the “a netflix series” in the thumbnail.

Garethvk264d ago

Ubisoft has a movie and television division and they haveban Assassin’s Creed project and others coming to hopefully increase the audiences for their franchises.

Noskypeno264d ago

They've been working on a remake for 5 years, and no updates since they said they're working on it. This and the Tomb Raider game that had a "sort of announcement with one concept art that it's in UE5" back in 2020 are really just taking longer than it needs to. Give us concept art or something. I enjoyed when devs like Bungie would give community updates on their projects and keep the community in the loop even if it's very vague like saying "our buddy Dave here is testing out this gun on this yet to be revealed monster in this secret location that we're working on".

SimpleSlave264d ago

After all these years, we get an animated show... 🙄

shinXseijuro264d ago

So it’s like conviction but animated
