Piracy May Have Saved the PS3

"The title says it all, unless the name of your company is Capcom, Electronic Arts or one of the other major publishers. However if the name of your company is Sony, you’re not exactly hating pirates as much as it might appear on the surface. Piracy hurts two things. First it hurts the publishers who lose out on sales."

i agree about it moving consoles in the US, but is it that rampant?

vgn245574d ago

Try moving enough consoles in North America (more than just the US) to finally kill the Xbox 360 off. I think they're letting it happen for a while and then once they have enough consoles sold. BAM! snap all the crooks with new firmware.

AndrewRyan5573d ago

If we look at the PS2 and Xbox, we can clearly see the PS2 was dominant in the US. Even now if Sony took the lead I don't think Microsoft would give in.

Biggest5573d ago (Edited 5573d ago )

Why are people still pretending that the PS3 sales were slow to begin with? It is still the third fastest selling console of all time. It sold faster than the 360 well before the thought of piracy was there. The PS3 saved itself. Piracy is not to be congratulated. We don't live on The Grand Line and none of us are Monkey D. Luffy.

Istanbull5573d ago (Edited 5573d ago )

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL its 2011 and STILL we get "PS3 needs saving/doomed" articles

FYI about how fast PS3 and 360 sold during same time period:

360 in 4 years worldwide: 38.5 million
PS3 in 4 years NA+Japan/3.5 years in EU: 47.9 million

Yeah, so much for PS3 needs saving

Redman225573d ago

(copy + paste from other thread)

Why stealing games is good for the PS3. Yeah...

If you don't believe the author just go ask the PC community... they'll tell you just how much they benefited from pirating games.

Idiots.

LOGICWINS5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

@GunShotEddy- Its not. Most people won't go through the trouble of buying a Blu-Ray writer and blank Blu-ray discs to copy games. The cost/benefit just isn't there. And then after all that trouble...you can't take advantage of your games online capabilities.

You save yourself less time and money if you just wait a couple months for games to drop $20.

@BeaRye- Well I know people who use BR discs because their hard drive space is limited.

BeaRye5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

@LOGICWINS - Who is buying BR discs? You just install the game on your HDD or you plug up an external HDD.

lmao. 10 minutes to hack and all the games on HDD. It's rampant for those with brains. Those who think hackers are buying BR discs are just ignorant.

@Loner - I don't think the guy above read it. Like you pointed out, they already know how to "spoof PSN to 3.56"

Loner5574d ago

You can play the games off a hard drive. And the PSN block has been bypassed(again) , they havent banned anybody yet for jailbreak consoles

BeaRye5574d ago

@LOGICWINS - What? You know people who use BR discs because their HDD is limited? Why not buy a new HDD? No one is stupidest to burn BR discs, which is far more expensive, instead of buying an HDD.

PostApocalyptic5574d ago

This writer seems like he's just woke up from a year long sleep. Where was he when the PS3 was selling big time after the first price drop? Did he conclude that it was piracy then?

Sorry, but rampant sales is just something he pulls out of his a** just to make a connection between the hacks and sales.

The PS3 would have been selling regardless. Not everyone is a thief.

BeaRye5574d ago

A year ago was the 4.31 hack, so maybe he did, lol!

PostApocalyptic5573d ago

BeaRye,

A year ago, the stories weren't as big as today since it wasn't related to the root key. They had run into limits regarding the removal of Linux and updates that followed. So, proportionally, the hardware sales and software sales reflect that the majority of people still paid for their software with in conjunction with your assumed rampant PS3 sales back in 2009. Today, we might see a small spike, but only those that choose to risk bricking their PS3 since the firmware and PSN is moving target and will continue to be. Those that live for hacking will continue too. But most people have lives outside of code.

Christopher5574d ago

This is in no way good for Sony. Profits from software greatly outweigh those from hardware.

@ Action Bastard

I'm too getting tired of these "Saving" articles.

JusenkyoGuide5574d ago

what kind of trash article is this? the ps3 is killing the competition right now.

Tommykrem5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

Sony isn't that interested in selling consoles. They're interested in selling games. They hardly make any money from console sale, PS3 has typically been sold at a loss.
Sony loses on it, publishers loses, and people who pay for console loses. That's piracy how it shouldn't be.

Jdoki5574d ago

True, the profit margin on software is higher than the hardware... But surely it follows that the more consoles you have out there, the more games you're likely to sell.

Tommykrem5574d ago

Yes, but if people buy hacked consoles they're likely to buy cracked games for it. That's why Sony doesn't want people to buy PS3 if they only intend to use Linux (yeah, I know) and not buy Blu-Rays or games.

krazeecain5573d ago

@Tommykrem: The idea here is that Sony waits a while to move its consoles, then releases a patch to kill the piracy. So the pirates are forced to buy the games.

...It probably won't work that way though...

GoldPS35574d ago

No it's the great exclusives

BeaRye5574d ago

Yup. Like the GTA series, DMC series, Final Fantasy series... uhm "rut row".

MajestieBeast5574d ago

Ye lets not mention LBP,God of war,killzone,Uncharted,motorst orm,twisted metal,resistance,infamous

Cause those have nothing on the 3 you mentioned lol go troll somewhere else.

Silly gameAr5574d ago

Are you serious? That joke is so 06. Other people have moved on. Where have you been for the last 5 years?

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8523d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele23d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk23d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10123d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit23d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg22d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10122d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14923d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle36d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit36d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog36d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog36d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad36d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_36d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage36d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda36d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
