Shogun 2: Total War Preview - CheatCC

"Total War: Shogun 2 is the last in a long line of Total War games, but it's the first to bear the Shogun name since the series' debut in 2000. Forget about Europe; it's back to feudal Japan for this strategy title. Get ready to fight against competing warlords in the Land of the Rising Sun."

This is one game that can never be done on the current consoles. You need lots of power, which my current PS3 nor 360 could handle without looking like crap.

This is a game that requires brain power, a capable system (PC) patience and strategy.

Getting this “Game of the Year” day one. Most people on this site haven’t played this series, thus don’t know what a “Real” series like “Total War” is. God of War or Halo don’t hold crap to this series.

P.S. Still waiting for Rome 2.......

Rome 2 would be the absolute best game ever....

I'm not sure if I should agree or disagree, so... bullet points time.

-It could be done on consoles, it just wouldn't look as pretty. Luckily, Total War games tend to scale well, so even a mid-tier PC ought to be able to run it fine...

-...assuming there are no bugs. Medieval II and Empire Total War were both nearly unplayable for months after launch due to the number of bugs out there.

-Brain power? Really? Sorry, but no. Don't try to take high-ground here--it's not very high up. It's also silly to declare TW a "real" series, given the rather... inconsistent nature of the series. And it's just plain stupid to imply that God of War, Halo, etc. are somehow false franchises.

-Generally speaking, anyone that tries to make some divide between "real gamers" and, you know, OTHER PEOPLE, is not a gamer at all, and does not deserve to play any games, period.

...

Anyway, on to the topic of Shogun 2... I'm looking forward to it immensely. I've been a fan of TW ever since the Shogun demo in PC gamer, and remember Shogun TW as being the best game in the series--coolest cinematics, awesome little strat-map videos, and the throne room.... It was far more immersive, detailed and fun than any of the games that came after it. I'm very glad to see Shogun 2 returning to those roots.

I only really have 2 concerns about the game:

First, that it may not be playable at release (again)... and that it may (again) be months before a patch is made. That would be awful.

The second concern would relate to the inevitable expansion(s). Sure, the Sengoku era is the most "famous" bit of Japanese martial history, but it's also a lot overdone. There are a TON of insanely interesting periods an expansion could cover. From Ashikaga to Meiji, I say. Let's see the Bakamatsu. SHINSENGUMI! Let's see Toyotomi's failed invasion of China. Hell, depending on how well they decide to incorporate gunpowder units and naval combat, it might even be possible to go all the way up to the Russo-Japanese and Sino-Japanese wars, in the begining of the Imperial era.

Just so long as they don't take the lazy way out and do a Mongol Ivasion thing. I mean goddamn.

As for Rome 2, I'd rather not. Shogun and Medieval both needed sequels because they were dated as hell. That's not the case with Rome. It would be better to go someplace NEW. How about China: Total War? Or a TW game based on the Golden Horde? Or one based on a fantasy setting, ala Age of Mythology?

You want to play Rome 2, just go and play Rome 1. It still looks very good by today's standards.

Your opinion is noted, and unlike any other opinions, is just that like mine.

But comparing a game such as any Total War game to a God of War or Halo, is laughable at best. Games like GOW have very little replay value, and game such as Halo only have relay value if you like online play, which I like. But to compare them to a deep game like any TW game is just rude at best.

I am sorry also, but Medieval 2 and Empire were quite playable at release, regardless of what you may have read. I had both at release and didn’t have any problems, not saying you didn’t. Though, being a PC gamer, I wish that released products did release for most gamers without problems, but having so many choices with hardware, quite impossible.

And as you thinking Shogun was the best in the series, most disagree and say that Rome was the best, but hey, each to their own. China for me would be a bore; Shogun takes care of the East quite well. Rome 2 is the next logical step, and it would be the biggest seller, bar none.

Either way, the Total War series is my favourite. I’m just happy that this franchise is still going.

@VX: I never made any comparison to God of War or Halo. That was you, not me. We all like analogies, right? What you said was akin to dismissing checkers as a game game because it lacks the same depth as chess.

And there's a large population of TW fans that see Shogun as the peak... typically, these are gamers who started with Shogun. Rome was the first Total War game for a lot of people, But I digress.

My true, personal opinion? I don't want a China:TW any more than a Rome 2, or Empire 2, or whatever. Total War has (apparently) exhausted all of the potential historical settings it's aware of: what we need is a Total War game that lets us create our own custom strategy maps, units and factions. A game that brings back more of the player options that have slowly been stripped out of the games with each new iteration. That would be a great next game.

Like I said before, there's no need for a Rome 2 or Medieval 3 or Empire 2, etc., because those games still look great. Making additional titles would just be silly at this point.

I honestly don't think is a large market for TW on consoles (Creative Assembly feels the same way) it's just a very different core audience. However, I do believe it is one of the strategy games(unlike SC2) that could actually work if scaled down to their respective hardware level.

Anyway, yes it's a big toss up for where the TW series should go from here, I don't think there is much of a point in remaking the other TW games...hopefully Shogun 2 is the perfect TW game that we can play for years to come. I'm really digging the MP features they are adding to this one.
