Microsoft a Quiet Storm Brewing in 2011?

The company has been silent lately on what they will be pumping out in 2011, aside from Gears of War three nothing notable has been announced. Is the company giving us the silent treatment in order to blow us away?

Unless MS pulls a rabbit out of a hat.......2011 looks pale as of now. Anything can happen but if MS has games waiting in the wings for 2011, they best be telling the gaming world it has them...and not just Kinect games either.

Abash5570d ago

"The company has been silent lately on what they will be pumping out in 2011"

Um, what? They've been hyping Gears 3 and Forza 4 for late 2011 since last year. They just dont have that many exclusives to release this year, that's why they seem pretty "silent" as the article states

ksense5570d ago

"Microsoft is a huge game company known for its blockbuster exclusives. Halo, Alan Wake, Crackdown, Forza, the list goes on and on." ....

the list goes on and on guys (hopefully he is not including kinect here).....

ComboBreaker5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

and then Microsoft finally came out and announced nothing but Kinect sh*t.

HolyOrangeCows5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

Microsoft not announcing exclusives until a few months before launch is a fallacy. You'll find that almost every major exclusive release was announced at least around 1 year before hand.

Let's look at 2010:
Halo Reach; announced E3 2009
Fable 3; Aug '09
Alan Wake; no, just no
SC: Conviction; no
Crackdown 2; June '09
Metro 2033; Oct 22, '09

Go ahead and look at previous recent years (launch years are likely exceptions), you'll find fairly similar results.

Lykon5570d ago

pop the baloon, jump to the music. disney mini golf, oh and an exclusive wii port of flap your arms and pretend your boxing version 2....

Jaces5570d ago

2011 is the year of Kinect. Gears and Forza aren't going to cut it and don't plan on seeing Crytek's exclusive released anytime this year.

Aloren5570d ago

@Combobreaker, well, 2010 was pretty good, I see no reasons why 360 owners should complain about last year, even without kinect (which, like it or not, is a major success), there was Reach, Alan Wake, Fable 3, Conviction... It's not like there was so much more on other consoles.

It's different this year though, I'm curious to see whether or not MS will come up with some surprises.

Corepred45570d ago

MS better come out with more awesome games! I just bought a new ps3 AND xbox 360 + kinect. So i'm hoping to put the 360 to good use this time.

Obama5569d ago

anyone who think MS still has a great exclusive lineup is living in Imagination Land.

Imagination...Imaginnnaaatiii oonn~~

Istanbull5569d ago

@Aloren: please never mention Fable 3 as Xbox blockbuster, that game sux!

I've never played such a bad game as Fable 3, seriously, the story is bad, the animations are bad, the graphics are BAD. Folklore, PS3 exclusive from 2007 looks better than Fable 3, toe co-op is bad, everything about the game is bad.

It has so many freaking loading times plus the environments are so little!

NickIni5569d ago

Considering how strong the PS3s 2011 lineup is looking compared to the 360s, I doubt MS would keep quiet. You don't want the consumer thinking the opposition has the upper hand.

Whilst I would love for MS to announce a shed load of exclusives for 2011, I really don't see it coming. Guess I might pick up Gears 3 if it turns out as good as it's looking now.

gaffyh5569d ago

I wouldn't expect too many more major announcements. I expected a lot last year, and all we got was a load of crappy Kinect announcements. It looks like MS' focus is clearly on Kinect, but with 2 or 3 major core titles each year.

In any case, Fable 4 probably will be announced for this year, and it will be a rushed pile of crap again. Only thing that is worth playing on 360 this year (exclusive) is Gears imo.

you can't announce what you dont have.

Kalowest5570d ago

I still have to buy the 360 exclusives from last year (Halo, Alan Wake, Crackdown, Forza).

gypsygib5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

Reach is excellent but spare yourself Crackdown 2, it was severely over-rated, the game kinda sucks.

AW was a good game but not worth 60 bucks, it is worth the 20 bucks you can get for now though.

Kalowest5569d ago

@siyrobbo: True but Forza 3 Ultimate Edition came out last years, all the DLC and some extras.

@gypsygib: True to you too, I played Reach and loved it, just have a copy. The reason I want CD&AW is because, I like CrackDown1 thats why i want CD2, and for AW it looks like a great story driven game.
Thanks for your opinions

siyrobbo5569d ago

alan wake is great, i liked the gameplay alot, story is quite convulted though. Crackdown 2 was a let down, i loved the original but the sequel didnt really build from it, and it is really repetitive, probably worth it if you can get it cheap

frostypants5569d ago

Reach is "meh". If you were bored of Halo 3, it doesn't bring much new to the table.

GameGambits5570d ago

Honestly they better have some tricks up their sleeves for this year in exclusivity for the hardcore gamers. I don't mean timed releases, or early DLC, or some stupid crap. I want a game I can't play anywhere else, on this box I paid my money for, and pay for the online service of to feel justified throughout the entire year, not just 1 title at the end of a year.

I am really excited for Gears 3 this year, but I hope we see at least 3 other exclusives that aren't Forza 4 and Kinect stuff.

Sony has their best line up since the launch of the PS3, and they will be adding NGP support. Nintendo has 3DS and at the very least a new Zelda. PC even has a lot of solid exclusives like The Witcher 2 this year.

I also wish Msoft would unveil some games at GDC, to put out in the middle of the year, and then save some for the end. Msoft constantly just tries to blow their load with 2-3 titles at the end of the year, when other big games hit and can't spread them out well enough so I could possibly support them.

-Alpha5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

They should, but don't get your hopes up.

I don't see any reason why they would wait either, unless all of these hidden games aren't ready.

They've made it abundantly clear that they are Kinect-focused and they know damn well that their core audience cares about COD and Gears and Halo, and they think that as long as they have that they are satisfying the core.

I'd like to think they are hiding some stuff but I sincerely doubt it and don't care to get my hopes up until it happens.

Masterchef20075570d ago

Shoot i can never disagree with you which is a good thing.

Anyways i think that Microsoft will concentrate on the largest audience in the gamming market which are the casuals (as proven by the WII) So expect a lot of the future titles on the 360 to be Kinect games. Plus i agree that Micrsoft believes that the core only need Gears and Halo because of the ammount those games sell on the 360. Its not like sony which has to produces a ton of games yet they dont pull off Halo numbers with them. Its a completly different buisness approach to the matter. I believe that Sony is concentrating on the core because they know that Microsoft and Nintendo are fighting over the casual market.

Kleptic5569d ago (Edited 5569d ago )

if anything its just another weird situation this generation...

Sony has never been genre focused, nor has its core audience...Their release list for 2011 illustrates that...No single title is going to be a massive run away success (save maybe uncharted 3, or even TLG, but not shooter like numbers)...mostly because there are simply so many different games to chose from that can only be played on a PS3...

Microsoft very much is genre specific, almost inadvertantly, because 'most' of their core audience is...when it gets exclusive games out side of the shooter genre, they don't perform any better than the PS3's similar exclusives (a lot of times much worse)...but a game like Gears 3 is more than enough for MS to ride out the year safely...

i guess that is my only point...MS doesn't need a big impressive list of exclusive games each year...they haven't had a year like in a long time...yet each year they are more than competitive with Sony (almost always trashing them in the US, and being very close overall globally)...

We always sit around and talk about how MS doesn't have a year full of 100% exclusive content...and yet each year the thing is doing just fine...The kinect issue is strange because it would appear at first that MS is dropping them...but even then, does it really affect them?...On a business scale it appears that 2011 is no different than 2010...or 2009 game wise...except now there is 'also' a bunch of kinect stuff coming...

A positive side of MS's strategy is that they don't crowd specific genres with a bunch of games...MS fans get arguably 'the' tps late this year, and I bet to a lot of 360 only owners...that is all they are really waiting for...Sony has never really figured that out...they just give gamers a bunch of options and let them decide...i like that approach, but also see that that is exactly why exclusive games on the PS3 never really set the world on fire...

bednet5569d ago

@Kleptic

What you're saying is correct, but I believe that in the long run, Sony has the better strategy...Shooters are good, and they'll satisfy the shooter crowd...but.

'Once a Gamer always a gamer' they say. We gamers evolve, myself, I play every genre, I've been gaming for over 20 years and my tastes changed quite a lot.

By building a library of varied genres and creating a stable of first party studios and IPs that cater to all genres, Sony is solidifying their foundation. Gamers grow over Shooters.

Microsoft seem to be more reactive, looking at their currently most played games, generalizing their customers and basically just trying to steal somebody else's market...It does what it has always been doing...it works in the short run, but they don't seem to have any long term vision.

That is my opinion, and I'm entitled to it.

Kleptic5569d ago

^ I totally agree...

I've always preferred Sony's approach to the console market over others for that exact reason...

I too play a lot of genres, but I guess I always did...I have since Doom 2 loved shooters though, but used PC for shooters all the way up until this generation...which when i figured the PS3's free online, coupled with news of killzone 2 having a 50 million dollar budget, i was finally getting shooter attention from Sony...

but yeah...we could go back and fourth all day about MS vs. Sony in terms of their goals in this industry...at this point in time specifically, at the business end, you can't really say one is doing better than the other...there is an approach that appeals to me more (which is Sony's), but its not like Sony is laughing all the way to the bank about it...

I'm just saying articles like this don't really go anywhere...MS's strategy, be it possibly near sighted, is currently working just fine...and has been for most of this generation...Any long term goals they are setting up appear to be based on going after Nintendo's casual market...while Sony is sitting back doing what they have done for 15 years...giving options...the only clear thing is that both companies are very firmly established in the industry for the remainder of this generation...at the very least...

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 5569d ago
xAlmostPro5570d ago

We know whats happening they're slowly but surely dropping the hardcore market because there's easy money in the casual market.

They're focusing on kinect, supporting the windows 7 phone and even mentioned offering more support to PC's in the future..

seriously won't be suprised if the next console or device they offer is kinect based and compatible straight into the TV or PC..

As for 2011 the only exclusives you'll be hearing about are kinect games other than gears & forza.. the 360 is heavily relying on multi-plat games to keep the hardcore audience happy on that console.. im not sure how long it will take for 360 users to get bored though :P

It's always sad when someones tries so hard then fails.

jeseth5570d ago

On a different note, I'm sure MS does have some crazy stuff planned for E3. I agree that they have been "too" quiet.

They usually always do something big at E3. I can't wait for the this year's show. Such close competition between Sony and MS has made this arguably the best gen ever.

NukaCola5569d ago

Kingdom Hearts 3? Epic fail with an unannounced game that won't go multiplat. That specific SE dev team doesn't make any game outside PS3/PSP.

NickIni5569d ago (Edited 5569d ago )

"Diablo III"
"Final Fantasy Versus XIII International Edition (exclusive to 360)"

Pure comedic genius.

If you were to take out all the multiplats and games that are unannounced/don't exist, well...wouldn't be much of a list.

wenaldy5569d ago

Seriously, I almost spurt my coffee in front of my notebook by reading ur games list.. Bro, I LOL'D SO HARD.. You're trying so bad you can taste it..

Ashby_JC5569d ago

The problem with this site here N4G is that unless the list is full of EXCLUSIVES then that long ass list of games somehow does NOT exist.

I myself own both systems and wont be buying alot of games.

BUT for the person who owns a 360 they are looking at the TONS of games that are coming out and picking and choosing what they want to buy and play.

Games like Fight Night Champion or Deus Ex are examples of games that should sell well and will be GOOD games.

MS doesnt have a long list of Exclusives. BUT there are games being released on the system that will rate high and be very good games to play.

now this year we will see them push gears 3 and forza 4 plus their motion control

and expect some exclusive DLC deals and expect a lot of advertisement for 3rd party games

it happens if you have a big year one year most probable next will be a down compare to the last

one worry i have is MS think that core market has been topped and putting all their eggs in motion control basket that won't be good for anyone

DOMination

sad thing is if someone is on the fence of which console to get than they can get a ps3 play all the exclusive and yet still get all those games from your list

whether we like it or not this gen is about exclusives because most 3rd party games can be played on any console.

SLLCKGT5569d ago

"Is the company giving us the silent treatment in order to blow us away?"

HAHA! Look at him trying to convince himself that something will happen. Give it up. MS has used you up like a cheap whore and thrown you the side for the next batch of fools who will a 360. Lesson learned. Dust yourself off and have some self respect for yourself and move on.

It`s already mid-February, how long are they planning on waiting? And even with new announcements, how many of them would actually arrive in a timely fashion?

Bigpappy5570d ago

Most of the stuff Sony is releasing now is stuff They were supposed to release last year. You might want to wait and see how many more get delayed until next year.

kaveti66165570d ago

That's not true, bigpappy.

Killzone 3 was not meant to be released last year.

Infamous 2 was not meant to be released last year.

Resistance 3 was not meant to be released last year. It was not delayed.

There are other titles that Sony isn't speaking about very openly, like TLG and Agent.

RedBullGT5570d ago

the only game that had a set release date that they pushed to 2011 was Little Big Planet 2.

ActionBastard5570d ago

Bigpappy fail is the sweetest fail of all.

LBP and Socom are the only games that were pushed back. So what about Killzone3, Infamous 2, Motorstorm: Apocalypse, Yakuza 4, MLB: The Show 11, and the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus remakes? And thats just the first part of the year.

Bigpappy5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

BS Big Pappy...

Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Twisted Metal, InFamous 2, Yakuza 4, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Motorstorm Apocolypse and The Last Guardian have always been 2011. The only exception is Little Big Planet 2.

And don't use FFXIV as an example. It's not exclusive and its not 1st party. None of the games I just mentioned will be delayed. Mark my words.

Delayed games for 2011 is better than crap shovelware Kinect games and no games at all. Wow Forza and Gears, such a big line-up for M$. NGP and PS3 is the way to go if you're a hardcore gamer. If anything, they'd probably have like 3 games at the most that are still a secret. A new Banjo Kazooie, Perfect dark game, and some secret Halo game.

Though seeing as Halo 1 remake is coming this year, we probably wouldnt see a new halo till atleast 2012.

Oh and maybe some kinect titles.

samoon5570d ago

I wonder how that new Halo remake is going to do in terms of sales.

i dont see the remake hitting those numbers :P

NukaCola5569d ago

I bet some Halo milk will get spilled out, but Banjo or Perfect Dark? I highly doubt it as Rare has gone the shovelware route. Unless it's Banjo Kinectzooee or something stupid like that.

BX815570d ago

Yeah I would actually like to see some kinect titles. I don't have one but I'm sure the people who did want some software for it. I think MS might have 2 games they haven't spoken about but then again they might not. This is the exact reason I own a PS3/360. Neither console is enough to fulfill my gaming needs.

Ashby_JC5569d ago

Yeah having both helps alot!!

I dont miss anything HUGE from either camp.

Ill be playing K3 next week. And Fight Night Champion next....Homefront....Socom 4....

...Dont really care if Gears 3 and Forza 4 is only major MS Exclusives hitting.

I cant buy them all anyways LOL...let alone have enough TIME to play them all if I did somehow manage to BUY them all.

So between both systems...there is MORE then enough games coming out...Multis and Excl.

"It never resorts to Sony’s approach of announcing most if not all of their games a year or two before release"

Not this s*** again. -_- It's been debunked so many times. We knew about Gears 3, Forza 4 and Kingdoms last year and every major game of 2010 the year before.

Alpha_Gamer5570d ago

Yeah, we knew about the entire 2010 360 lineup in 2009.

Fable 3, Reach, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Mass Effect 2 etc. We knew about them all. I never understood this whole "Microsoft keeps a tight lid on their games." talk.

samoon5570d ago

But when it comes to Sony we know years before the release. Which is a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

Quagland5569d ago

@samoon- We knew about Killzone 2, GT 5 and maybe Last Guardian years before the release.
Not for Uncharted 2/3, Socom 4, LBP 2, Motorstorm 2/3, Resistance 2/3, Ratchet: TOD/CIT/A4O, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, Modnation Racers and more. What's funny is that Sony- on average- have less time between the announcement and release of their titles than Microsoft yet this myth still persists.

MrBeatdown5570d ago (Edited 5570d ago )

"Unlike Sony, Microsofts exclusive lineups always come out with a bang and do just as well on the market."

Like Crackdown 2 and Alan Wake, right? Or Too Human?

Give me a break.

MS didn't delay Gears 3 to the fall, leaving the first half of 2011 completely empty, only to announce a bunch of games for the fall later on. They did it to bolster a weak line-up, which as of right now, consists of just two games.

strickers5570d ago

What about Huxley??This MS save stuff to the last minute is another sad myth. They may have a surprise this year but I'll bet it's a multi plat they've snaked at the last minute with vast sums of cash.
It will probably end up being a timed exclusive or some timed DLC.
MS fanboys are the saddest in existence.
They will lap it up like the good little doggies they are.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay19d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay19d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay19d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde19d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_18d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
