Why Killzone 3 Doesn't Deserve a '7'

TSA Writes:
Here at TSA we often berate those that only pick up on a review’s final score rather than reading the text, but recently, as the reviews for Guerrilla’s Killzone 3 continue to roll in, there’s been a few low scores in amongst the mean that stand out from the crowd.

if it didnt deserve some 7's, it wouldn.t get them

fortunately its metascore is mid 80's, that means that the 7's in most cases were unjustified

SnakeMustDie5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

My problem isn't that the game got a 7. But they took a lot of point just from the story being annoying. Again, I have yet to play the game so I cannot say if the story does or does not suck.

Another ones like Edge took out points because it is a "shooter". Come on, why on earth are you going to take out points from a FPS because "it still depends heavily on the brutal impact of the shooting at its core". If that's the way they judged KZ3 then every FPS from now on must get low marks because "it still depends heavily on the brutal impact of the shooting at its core".

Most of the sites just wants to find a way to downplay the game and it shows from sites like Edge.

kancerkid5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

The author starts off by saying that reviews are other peoples' opinions and inherently subjective, and that different people like different things. Well he should have just stopped there. Not everyone is going to give the game a 10/10, nor is everyone going to give it a 1/10. Why he cares if someone gave it a 7 is beyond me.

Really, I don't see why the 'meta' score matters to him, or anyone else.

BDSE5574d ago

EDGE use the full scale from 1-10 whereas most other sites use a weighted scale 8 and above. A 7 from edge is 2 above average and is probably an 8 or 9 from everywhere else.

NoobJobz5574d ago

@ kancerkid. Exactly. He states they are their opinions but pretty much tries to say that their opinions are wrong. Stop worrying about 3 reviewers giving the game a 7. Who cares? Thats what they thought of the game. Buy the game for yourself and see how you like it. Those 3 giving it a 7, has no effect on what you will think of the game.

soundslike5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

maybe people are getting tired of the same linear bullshit that they keep shoving down our throats via games that have good things going for them.

Everyone's forgot about pacing and exploration. You don't need to be an RPG to have small amounts of exploration. DOOM, which the article mentions, was not linear in the slightest. There was one goal, but you weren't just shooting people to get there. Linear campaigns sucked back in 99, and they suck now.

blusoops5574d ago

While reviews are mainly opinions, this article is mainly about the incosistency of some reviewers.

Take joystick for example. They gave KZ3 a 7 mainly because the story sucked in their opinion and they stated that in the review.
However they also said the story sucked in halo reach and compared it to a Saturday morning cartoon but in the same sentence the reviewer said he didn't care and gave the game a 10 anyways.

That's what this article is about, more so than the scores themselves.

These scores of 7's mean nothing to me anyways. I for one thought the story in KZ2 was horrible, and still enjoyed the game thoroughly. From my understanding KZ3 is miles better in terms of presentation and story (even if cliched a lil) so I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it as well.

insomnium25574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

@kancekid

MC score matter to some because of the x360 fanboys. They started downplaying Uncharted and R&C:TOD and kept laughing about their sub 90 score which in turn meant that the game was not AAA back then. This is all their effin fault.

@blusoops above

Exactly but still the x360 fans are here blaming that we think that every Sony game must get perfect 10s across the board. That way they can sway the attention away from the real problem which you just said about the inconsistencies in reviews. This is getting so freaking old....same s*it different day...

Kleptic5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

its not that the 'opinions' are the problem...we all understand that a review is subjective entirely...its when the opinions of one title don't line up with opinions of another title...that destroy any credibility...

a perfect example someone posted on that site:

Joystiq on KZ3 – “Unfortunately, the spectacle of the graphics can’t rectify the travesty that is the game’s narrative. Killzone 2 didn’t have a story, some complained. I’d much rather have nothing than the heavy-handed, absurdly edited tale of Killzone 3. There’s a feature length film’s worth of cutscene tucked away onto the Blu-ray disc, and were it placed into theaters you would walk out in anger and ask for your $12 back. The performances are strong, but the script is miserable. The lack of characterization makes it difficult to care about the plot, and the cutscenes’ inability to convey something as simple as cause and effect makes it impossible to even try.”

7/10

Joystiq on Halo Reach – “The Campaign is easily the series’ best…. Reach, being Bungie’s last Halo game, is a setup for heavy-handed melodrama, but the plot is never that distracting. It’s not much more sophisticated than a decent Saturday morning cartoon, but it fills out the framework of an excellent game and satisfies the broader franchise story arc…. I actually zoned out for several of the cutscenes, simply because I needed a rest. The gameplay is that engaging.”

10/10

different reviewers...whatever...a good reviewer would probably have a good idea of what genre fans are expecting, and at least line up his subjective rating within the boundaries of what other titles receive...within that genre...or at least he 'should'...

they even used the phrase 'heavy-handed' as a pro for Reach, and a con for kz3...anyone can see how blatantly wrong that is...

gypsygib5574d ago

Never trust Edge reviews for PS3 games, they give any non PS3 game a better score 95% of the time.

Remember when Dead Space Extraction got a better score than Killzone 2, and Kinect Sports got an 8, Crackdown 2 got an 8, the list goes on showing them giving mediocre exclusives on other consoles better scores consistently.

Someone made a report demonstrating statistically that Edge underrates PS3 exclusives.

JBaby3435574d ago

Another well said comment by Kleptic. That combined with the stat analysis below shows the level of bias. It's one thing to not like KZ3 but to show bias from a foundational standpoint is just wrong and an injustice to the devs who designed the game and put hard work into it. Hopefully this changes and people give games a fair shake instead of biasing secondary to consoles, hype trains, and pay-offs.

HolyOrangeCows5574d ago

+Well said to SnakeMustDie

Some of Kz3's reviews have been absolutely ridiculous and full of double-standards that the likes of Halo and COD always get away with.

It is a good looking but a bad game. Too boring and nothing new. That is why it is no AAA but metacritics.

bageara5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

it has scored 10s, 9s and 8s with only a handfull of 7s? and a 7 is average. Not one reviewer has called it a bad game

Boody-Bandit5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

Modern Warfare 2 says hi @ 94 average rating.
^Which just proves how broken and meaningless reviews have become.

kewlman25574d ago

@bageare
man that is a bad game for me. if you like it go on.

But i guess sales will show what i am not alone with not liking this game.

bageara5574d ago

@Brutallyhonest
What does MW2 @ 94 prove? you have totally lost me

@kewlman
So you rate games of metacritic and sales? thats sad man your missing out on so many good games

paintsville5574d ago

I agree with Kewlman2. It's more of the same. Controler response is the biggest advancement in this release. Otherwise, it's got more color and that's about it. With all the Sony hype I expected much, much more. Instead we just got more of the same, just in color now.

kewlman25574d ago

@Bagera no i just played the beta and agree with the score.

will no buy.
GG should hire better writers and game designers.

bageara5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

Ah well at least you made your own mind up and you agree with the average 7

I played the game and agreed with the perfect 10s the game scored, of course these are just our opinions

@Brutallyhonest
Sorry i get what your saying now lol

specialguest5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

You played the Beta, and somehow you concluded that the writing sucks? The Beta showed nothing about the story/writing.

And No, sales do not mean a game is good or bad. That's one of the silliest and childish argument. There's no need to debate that. haha

NeoTribe5574d ago

Totally disagree with it not being different. Not quite sure if u put much time into playing it or even played it period. Most fps are modern military, this is a fast paced explosive sci fi space age nazi killin freak fest. How is that boring and nothing new?

edge giving a 7 is no big deal.. edge has a huge statitiscally proven bias against ps3 exclusives.. i think gamers would be more shocked if edge gave killzone a higher score..

kancerkid5574d ago

Omigod, conspiracies!

derp

anh_duong5574d ago

it's not a conspiracy it is a fact..

statistical fact

insomnium25574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

Did Kancerkid REALLY just say that.....? I'm at a loss for words...there's no hope in this world.... Same s*it different day. This is SO old....

kancerkid5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

You are making the assumption that PS3 exclusives are as good as Xbox 360 titles, thus they should all be rated approximately the same. Maybe your assumption is false.

Also, look how old the games are that encompass the cross-section of games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in that dataset. Old is old.

Try doing it with the games for the PS3 which have been released in the last year which are considered above average in quality compared to most 360 titles (in my opinion of course) which have been released in the same time period. I think the hack job at statistics might show something different.

Don't believe all numbers you see on the internet just because it proves YOUR point, because alas, that is the definition of bias.

Also, the author of those statistics does not provide much of a method of how he picked the games he was using, such as why he leaves out some games but not others.

JBaby3435574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

Great post Anh_duong. That statistical analysis is pretty telling. I don't base much on reviews but still to see that there is such as bias listed as mathematical fact is pretty unbelievable. How can people still argue about the rating systems not being broken?

@kancerkid: Did you look at the stats? Do you know how to read stats and variations? It's pretty clear. Your post is pretty senseless by the post.

Discussing numbers is useless. Discuss the friggin' comments and thoughts on the game.

Some people say 5 is average, some people say 8 is average, some people don't even know what they think. Honestly, there is no point in just staring at a number and talking about that. Ugh.

after playing about 10hrs of the MP beta...
the only concerns I have is hit detection (shotgun is just stupidly to accurate at distances) and like any other shooter, MP is so little different than the previous game.
but the later doesnt stop other games like COD or Halo from getting high scores

Ace_19755574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

I played the single player demo last night with the sound off as it was late. And the game is actually better when you don't have to listen to the story, or Rico the tosser. They really do drag this series down a few points. Ditch them all for the next game and bring in likable characters with a interesting story please. I want Rico to get a bullet in the head in every cut scene, get rid of him FFS . Everyone said they didn't like him in the previous game, so what do you do. Bring him back and have him tag along on lots of missions.

Stupid and you deserve to lose review points for your stupid inability to listen to people who wanted him gone.

Graey5574d ago

So...instead the developers should have just hired you as a consultant? Instead of...perhaps making up their mind and I don't know...possibly setting up rico's demise in this game or the next...via...a storyboard type thing.

Seriously though, no disrespect but perhaps you should wait until the ending credits and see how the game is. Maybe he does die...and even if he doesn't perhaps the developers have a bigger plan in mind for him.

Just a thought.

Darkfiber5574d ago

let x be average score
x = 5
7 > 5
∴ 7 > average

let y be low score
5 > y
7 > 5
∴ 7 ≠ low score, 7 > low score

NiKK_4195574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

yes, but 5 isn't really an average, i would say average is about 7 or 8, usually if a game is rated a 5/10 that's a bad game, review numbers aren't exactly true to the actual numbers. i see your point, but that is not how people actually review it...i wish it was though, it would make more sense

BabyTownFrolics5574d ago

the story is dragging the game down?

GG should hire new writers then, may I suggest that the next three installments of Killzone, be from the Helghast point of view and we play as a young Helghan who rises through the ranks and is conflicted by the actions of his nation-planet.

the Helghan make the series, space marines are so last gen, space nazis are the future.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic541d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23541d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1541d ago (Edited 541d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1858d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1858d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1858d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1858d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1858d ago
Vegamyster1858d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1858d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1858d ago (Edited 1858d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

MadLad1857d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1858d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
