3DS game load times a cause for concern?

3DS Tribe look at loading times across the vast majority of the 3DS lineup - with some games needing 15 or so seconds to load a level and others with barely noticable loading times, or shorter loading times than other platform game versions.

3DSTribe writes:

"The days of the N64 were the days where cartridges were going out of style. Since the PlayStation arrived on the scene, discs were the way of the future, at least for home consoles. But discs mean loading times. And loading times are lame.

Of course, the card-based media that handhelds use have meant that loading times were never a bone of contention on the Game Boy or DS. Unfortunately, they look to potentially be one of the less swanky features of our New Favourite Thing Ever™, 3DS. It’s important to point out that we don’t yet know for sure whether loading times are likely to be an issue, not least because we don’t know how fast the 3DS cards will be able to read the data. And who knows whether or not the demo builds are representative of the efficiency of the final product?"

The larger games might take longer than your standard DS game to load but in the end it will still be faster than a disc based game more often than not.

I agree - look at how much faster PES 2011 loads on 3DS - and it can stream commentary. That's likely the difference between a disc such as the UMD (I remember the PSP PES games had very long load times) and game card. Probably still a case by case scenario (as Ridge Racer 3DS takes as long as the PSP games to load but might be loading other things since 3DS Ridge Racer has improve shaders and so on and Capcom's MT Framework engine probably imposes load times on The Mercenaries 3D.

Probably also why Sony went with game cards for PSP2 - asides from making the unit smaller and conserving battery life. That way load times will always be fast - whether games are played off a game card or internal memory.

At first I was like, No Code Veronica on the list!? But then I seen Mainline. The list checks out, but I would personally put 2 over 4.

KwietStorm_BLM101d ago

I'll take 2 over 4 also. And even without a number, I don't see how Code Veronica, my other favorite in the franchise, isn't mainline when it's the actual sequel to RE2.

Rebel_Scum101d ago

The original RE was the best. Its not on the list which makes no sense.

The remake of it was alright but should be higher on this list.

The original RE smokes VII and Village, come on.

i’m fine with people calling it “mainline,” but leaving out the original re1 entirely is wild, since it basically defines the whole series. i’d still put re2 over re4 for pure pacing and atmosphere, even though re4 is the more replayable game. also, the “mainline” label gets messy with code veronica since it feels more essential than some numbered entries. i swear half the time i’m reading these rankings i get derailed by random gambling tabs i opened earlier, including https://monopolybigballerli... and https://football-studio-dic... and https://red-baron.org/ which is a weird contrast to talking about survival horror.
