Xbox Live is Wallet Rape

Shaquile Hansford pontificates on the scam that is Xbox Live...

"It’s not like this is news to most of us with a basic education, but Microsoft and its online console service is about as intelligent a buy as a fat burning belt. Sorry, chubby, but if you want to see your lower body without the help of a mirror, you’re going to have to stop drinking fried oreo milkshakes and beating it to reruns of Attack of the Show. Anyway, back to the Xbox and its joke of an online service..."

Of course it just takes your money. Why the hell would you have to pay to play online?

PS3, Wii, and PC do it for free.

MintBerryCrunch5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

Jugador

no, not free...there is just one less step that you have to go through with those 3 in order to be connected...we all pay our ISPs for a connection

rockleex5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

@MintBerry:

So why do you have to pay ONCE MORE to play games online on the 360?

I would understand if features like Cross Game Chat required Gold, but something like online play should be free.

Gold is supposed to be the extra that you choose to pay for, not the standard that you MUST pay for.

EDIT: I knew what you meant. But everybody knows you have to pay ISP's for a connection.

DORMIN5564d ago

Did the author just realize this or something?

People have been paying for xbox live for almost ten years now. I can't imagine someone thats been paying since the beginning. Average the price lowers-hikes thats easily more than $500 that could have easily when towards buying games.

MintBerryCrunch5564d ago

uhh i didnt say anything about Live, i was just telling him that we arent playing for free when we are on PSN, PC or Wii...we still pay ISPs

as far as Live goes, im not a MS exec nor one of the 30 million who are just fine paying for the service...so MS must be doing something right to have the majority of its console owners pay to play online

Biggest5564d ago

Yeah. It's called "You can NOT play online unless you pay us too!" It's hard to say no when you have to pay or only play half of the game.

HolyOrangeCows5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

"Facepalm/giggle"?
http://t2.gstatic.com/image...

I stopped buying xbox LIVE gold in 2008. Best gaming related decision I've ever made. I see no reason to pay for Xbox LIVE just to play online, have Xchat, and a bunch of features I'll never use (some of them at least not on a console; many of them requiring MORE subscriptions, restricted to only when I have a gold account). More money for games and loose women.

Oh, and for the people who always say crap like "LOL $50/$60/whatever-I-pay-on-ebay is pocket-change"...
http://www.youtube.com/watc... (Warning you now: language)

"the only people that bitch about it are the people who, A) don't even have a 360, and B) don't pay it anyway"
You keep telling yourself that.

ComboBreaker5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

"...so MS must be doing something right to have the majority of its console owners pay to play online..."

Dude, if you want to defend Microsoft, you gotta come up with a list of beneifts over the free services.

You can't just say:

"hey, Microsoft must be doing something right if all these peoples are paying"

because someone could easily counter that with

"hey, the tobacco companies must be doing something right, cause all these peoples are paying the tobacco companies to give them cancer."

Cuase that still doesn't explain why Xbox Live is worth it and why it's better than the alternative free services.

It only shows that 360 gamers are stupid. So are you really sure you want to say that 360 gamers are stupid?

MintBerryCrunch5564d ago

JEEBUS the fanboyism on this site...you actually think i was defending Live....i would NEVER pay for live...did you miss the part where i said i dont own a 360...if you think that 30 million gamers are stupid, thats a statement you brought on yourself...if a business plan like that has managed to work out...then the guy at MS whose kicking back in his office must be laughing all the way to the bank

and whats with the tobacco analogy? "paying them to get cancer" well shit, that would make billions of people on this planet stupid...you coming to the conclusion that im calling someone stupid is STUPID...your tobacco analogy proves it..you call 360 Live subscribers stupid, well like i said, then you just called out every smoker on the planet

ComboBreaker5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

Apology accepted.

MintBerryCrunch5564d ago

so you think your interpretation of my comment is the end all for all the readers on this site?

kind of weird that you keep stating it as though it is fact that i think 360 owners are stupid...which wasnt my intent

but keep on pushing the subject...idk why you do...i guess you need the gratification of knowing that you won something

jimbone795564d ago

The thing that I don't get is, the only people that bitch about it are the people who, A) don't even have a 360, and B) don't pay it anyway. I have Live and I enjoy the service, but I do understand how it's a major turn off for a lot of people. I didn't own the original Xbox and laughed at people for paying extra to play a game online last gen. I tried it out when the 360 dropped, mostly because I had a good job and could now afford it, and I like it now that I know what is provided. I have a PS3 and I still pay for live because I LIKE IT. Again I do understand why people don’t like the idea of it, but if you’re not paying for it you have no room to bitch. It's worth the money to me. What I don't understand why people feel the need to log into your computer and bitch and bitch and bitch about it when you don't HAVE to pay for it. Rarely do I see someone who has a 360 and pays for Live complain about it. If you are not shelling out money for it you have no reason to complain. Do you really think your bitching and crying is going to change the minds of the millions who are happy with the service?

Optical_Matrix5564d ago

Some of us are lucky enough to have had a friend supply them an Xbox and a years subscription to Live over the christmas break. I sure as hell won't be renewing my subscription when the year is up. I honestly CANNOT see what justifies the price tag. Should be free. If not free, no way should it be £30.

lukewind5564d ago

Wow what a misinformed and truly crap article. Why do Sony fanboys constantly write this crap? How childish do you have to be? PSN is free because it barely gets updated and has 1/3 the features of XBL. If you don't wnat any of the features of XBL then dont pay for it. But you get what you pay for with PSN.

Any one of you that believes this article is missing quite a few brain cells.

metsgaming5564d ago

it didnt only point at ps3 it pointed at the wii and the pc. All of which are free and have always been and the writer is asking why are people paying for it?

lukewind5564d ago

People pay because they like using it. The online console space is much different in terms of infrastructure then the PC. The cost of running the service behind XBL is much greater because it requires a team of people behind the service, while in the PC world it is done more on an individual basis. Sony loses money on PSN, and I commend them for making it free, but that doesnt mean payoing for something you love is stupid! Criticizing it is the stupid part.

XBL is 16 cents a day. If you are that poor why the hell do you have an Xbox in the first place...feed your kids.

The whole price crap is just another gripe fanboys try and use. PSN is perfectly fine, but it does lack some feature that a lot of people use on XBL, party chat being one of them. Unless who own a 360 you have no idea how big party chat has become over XBL. Add in the fact that you don't have to mess with a Bluetooth headset and XBL is just more approachable and easier to use for most people. This crap is all just bitter 16 year olds. Grow the hell up.

rockleex5564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

PS3 barely gets updated? Why is it that 360 trolls (not 360 fans in general) always claim the PS3 has constant updates like its a bad thing then?

1/3 the features? What about stuff like Web Browsers? PS Home, a virtual online hub for games to hang out? Support for the most variety of video, audio, and picture formats? Bluray?

Oh wait, Cross Game Chat = 2/3 of the features that PS3 doesn't have. O_o

Biggest5564d ago

PSN barely gets updated. . . More than once a week.

flipm7255564d ago (Edited 5564d ago )

PSN barely gets updated? Get your facts straight they update every Tuesday.

Edit: oh ok sorry I read it wrong. But don't go calling me a moron you don't know a thing about me.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio6d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing6d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit6d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing6d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay8d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn29d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn28d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown8d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay8d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay8d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac8d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger8d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster30008d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde8d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde8d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_7d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
