Three Xbox 360 MMOs That Never Were

The word is out that there is another Xbox 360 MMO in the works. On top of that, the word “zombie” is also in the mix and is beginning to spark the interest of the millions of Xbox 360 users.

These 360 fans though have been promised various MMOs, and no developer has delivered on that promise. This has created tons of skepticals in the community and even some gamers that just laugh to themselves and others when they hear a new one is on the way. These aren’t ridiculous thoughts though, developers have pulled on their heart strings a little too much and seem to hang the console gamers on a string just playing with them and egging them on just to end up never delivering. Here are three that are most notable in my eyes.

MMOs will never work on the 360 as long as Microsoft continues to keep Xbox Live a closed a network service.

That's why All Points Bulletin was never released for X360. The same goes for Final Fantasy XIV not being considered for 360, and the same will happen with The Secret World, which people claim is being developed for PC/360, but I believe will only see a PC release.

maniacmayhem5583d ago

It can work, having a closed network has nothing to do with it as long as MS and whatever developer works together.

The problem comes with fees and xbox live. it will make no sense for a person to pay for live and an MMO.

the best thing to do is to have a free to play type of game and charge with micro transactions.

kancerkid5582d ago

Many MMOs are now becoming successful through microtransactions, which could mean there would be less of a problem of MMOs coming to consoles, specifically 360

Mystogan5583d ago

The zombie MMO is being developed by both Microsoft and Undead labs so 99% chance that this is the next MMO to actually hit the Xbox 360.

Phantasy Star Universe
Final Fantasy Online

are the only ones so far

NoobSessions5583d ago

Monster Hunter Frontier [in Japan] too

ceed9115583d ago

On top of that I heard there will be no monthly fee and they are trying to find different way to focus on earning money.

Advertising/Microtransactions most likely.

Godmars2905583d ago

I get the feeling that we have to want and see what the game actually is and what it involves. Just something about it being XBLA sounds off.

Of course, gameplay could be like Diablo. A refined version Angel Links or the mech game Earth Zero(?) Really surprised that style hasn't been adopted for console MMOs.

Mystogan5583d ago (Edited 5583d ago )

@NoobSessions and Dee_Cazo

Thats true and i think Microsoft said they will allow microtransactions or something like that.

Here it is:

http://beefjack.com/news/mi...

So it will probably have Microtransanctions instead of Monthly fee's that would be perfect for an MMO on Xbox since we already pay for Gold.

@GodMars290

Yeah I think depending the arcade game sales which judging by the success of Dead Rising Case Zero it could be the go ahead on Microsoft's part.

@Mystogan

I think they are smart enough to shy away from game altering microtransactions but if Microsoft gives it full support they essentially just became publishers to a title that could be as big as Halo was to the original Xbox.

RockmanII75583d ago

Phantasy Star Universe is still running on Xbox Live to my knowledge, so MMO's can be done on Xbox.

Spartacus54055583d ago

Dc universe online shows that console MMOs are possible

I heard DCUO was Sonys fastest selling game 2 date. 0.0

MARKUS_MAX1MUS5583d ago

Really?! thats pretty interesting....

Persistantthug5583d ago

Just making sure there's no misconstrued info. :)

Masterchef20075582d ago (Edited 5582d ago )

No developer has deliverd that promise because they are scared off by XBOXlive. I know XBOXlive is a closed system and all but microsoft has got to give devs a little bit more freedom. This year alone the PS3 is going to have at least 2 MMO DC Online and The Agency. Plus theres a ton of rumors of free realms comming out on the PS3.

The Five Most Disappointing Video Games Of All Time

For every game that truly lives up to its potential, there are a couple that absolutely miss their mark. Be it a simple case of over hyping an unfinished product, to game systems that downright are broken, or even just a game being inexcusably horrible, some games just leave a terrible taste in people’s mouths.

I still loved Too Human for all of it's flaws.

If only Denis Dyack knew how to keep his mouth shut, the game's reception might have been very different.

Gamer6664598d ago

Agreed, Too Human was flawed, but the story was strong and the RPG elements were strong.

The control scheme was the only real lackluster part of the game... Unfortunately, you are reminded at how flawed the control scheme was in every single level and every single battle in the game...

UnHoly_One4598d ago

I have to disagree about the controls. They were different, but it worked, and made for a unique experience.

I never had a problem with the controls at all.

pixelsword4597d ago (Edited 4597d ago )

Why is it that people always want to put Lair down in a list like that, but when you see comments about it, most people who played the game enjoyed the game? The game wasn't broken, the game wasn't incomplete, the controls just had a steep learning curve, and most of that was basically keeping your controller straight after turning, and 180 turns, both were fixed after the patch.

People hated on this game merely because it was 1080p and (mostly) 60fps, and it came out early in the PS3's life-cycle; certain fanboys masquerading as journalists knew if this game bombed, people wouldn't invest in other games that were that ambitious and that's exactly what happened because after that games were cancelled (8-days) or delayed to the PS4 (last guardian).

Kleptic4597d ago (Edited 4597d ago )

^seriously dude?

I was as excited for Lair as anyone...and omg did it suck...

a story that...i'm not even going into it...the dialogue? ('why don't you try spitting some fireballs at them??' over and over and over)...

sorry man...that game was complete trash...there were plenty of early PS3 games that i feel got very unfair treatment within the media...but a conspiracy against Lair is something i could never agree with...it was just a shitty game...plain and simple...to each their own, though...

hell, i thought Haze was better than Lair...and haze was damn near unplayable...

JasonKCK4596d ago

Too Human is pretty good for an unfinished game. It also has one hell of a dedicated fanbase.

GuyThatPlaysGames4598d ago

Definitely Too Human. Also, I would add Haze and Duke Nukem.

joe904598d ago (Edited 4598d ago )

Too Human was OK i don't get everyones hate of it. I enjoyed the leveling of the armour and weapons.

APB is still played by the thousands and makes a very steady income from it.

Why no Damnation,Haze,Duke Nukem Forever or Rogue Warrior? They're the worst/over-hyped games i have ever played.

I know this is an opinion piece so it is what it is.

TheEnigma3134598d ago

I think rogue warrior needs to be on here. And why Isn't E.T. on here since we're talking about all time terrible games. That game single handily crashed the video game world.

isarai4598d ago

maybe because it's not "all time terrible games" it's "Most Disappointing Video Games Of All Time" even in commercials and the promise of ET was trash, no one was expecting greatness from that game. but yes Rogue Warrior was horrid compared to what it was meant to be, wasn't even close to it's target

Ghostdogg4596d ago

Rouge warrior was pure garbage and lol@ E.T.

iamnsuperman4598d ago (Edited 4598d ago )

For me Haze. I was interested to play it. That was until I played the demo. Picked it up in a bargain bin later on after its launch and I am glad I did........pick it out of a bargain bin and not pay full price

SuperBlur4598d ago

APB , that game went from having a 100mill dollar budget to bankruptcy so fast , it should be a record on its own

raistra4598d ago

Such a great studio lost to that game :(

KonsoruMasuta4598d ago

No Dude Nukem: Forever? That games had so much hype surrounding it and it turned out to be a steaming pile.

What APB got right, and why it initially failed

PC Gamer - The action-MMO first known as APB lives on as APB Reloaded. But if your memory serves, you’ll recall that the urban, massively-multiplayer shooter had a quick death: APB shut down just months after launching at the end of June 2010, coinciding with the dissolution of developer Realtime Worlds.
