Game Length: Why The Moaning?

TSA looks at the recent complaints over videogame length.

insomnium25585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

I don't mind the moaning I just can't stand the fact how COD MW1 and 2 was much shorter as sp but it was overlooked in their cases hence the great score on mc. When reviewers nag about the sp length and deduct points from KZ3 for it it is a double standard for crying out loud.

I really don't care what games get in mc as long as there is atleast SOME consistency in the reviewing methods. But I guess that is way too much to ask.

Active Reload5585d ago

If the online is like KZ2 then the moaning is warranted in my opinion. I maxed out at General in less than 4 days.

mp12895585d ago

have you been having trouble playing the beta? cause otherwise you would know how good the multiplayer can get

Active Reload5585d ago

KZ2's multiplayer was good, what your point? No, I haven't played the beta. My point, if you missed, was referring to the length of KZ3's campaign length compared to KZ2's easily to max-out ranking system. If KZ3's ranking system is more fleshout and takes longer to obtain then I wouldn't personally complain too much about it's campaign length. But if KZ3's highest rank is as easy and as swiftly obtained as in KZ2 + the campaign being short, then I can see why people would complain.

UnSelf5585d ago

@active u clearly havent been on KZ2 in a whileeee becuz they been increased the lvl cap to 3 newer levels. til this day ive only seen 1 person that has max'd the new cap

Active Reload5585d ago

Well yeah, I haven't played KZ2 since....Apr-May of '09.

Biggest5585d ago

Soon after its release they raised the rank cap. If you reached that max in four days, you had to have played every minute of every day without any breaks and added an extra day or two in between the four days. That is highly unlikely.

Active Reload5585d ago

Stop lying dude. They didn't raise the cap that soon. But then again you're not really lying because they would've had to raise it AFTER the game was released, lol. Anyway, I know I had the game for at least a month and they didn't raise the cap in that time. They might've raised it when they released the dlc, but that was at least a couple of months after the release.

Biggest5585d ago

If you only played for a month, you missed the rank increase ( http://blog.us.playstation.... How was I lying? I said soon. Is soon too soon to be soon? I wasn't aware that a number was attached to that word. And in my opinion, two months is soon for a rank increase.

Killzone 3 isnt the first or the last game that has been getting knocked for length..

One random blog before the game released saying that some kid beat Halo ODST in 5 hours had people repeating it as the factual game length..last year Splinter Cell Conviction and Vanquish fell to the length criticisms..

With K3 it's like the reviewers really took issue with the story..

Either way..I can't see people cancelling their preorders over any of the latest criticisms...I know I won't

Evil

ShinMaster5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

Yeah? But even if people point it out, Halo and COD games don't get knocked on reviews and scores because of their short length. While other games(like this one) do.
There is a double standard in almost every game review.

Death5585d ago

One of the main benefits of using Blu-ray storage was longer games in higher definition. Shouldn't first party exclusives use this additional storage?

r1sh125585d ago

As long as the single player is good at the story telling it shouldnt matter how long or short it is.
Is about the content and quality,
COD MW1 had a short story but it was a great story.
How many games start with someone holding a golden dezzie to someones head?

I also dont understand why so many people complain about KZ3 single player, If I remember someone from guerilla said the stats for single player were shockingly low - meaning the focus was on the multiplayer.

P_Bomb5585d ago

Good article.

When I was a kid everyone loved Contra. A true classic. Cost the same as games do now, $60. But if Contra released today, it'd be slaughtered. Why? There's a Contra achievement on the 360 for beating it in 12 minutes. This is a former $60 game that can be beat in under 12 minutes. And people complain about 4-8 hours, lol.

But you know what? I don't care. I replayed that game so much. It made an impact and is even homaged in LBP's user levels to this day. There's a place for 12 minute speed runs just as much as 60hr grinds. If a game is good, it's good. I barely have enough time to finish everything I want to these days anyway.

thereapersson5585d ago

I think it is exactly what a lot of us were thinking, but just couldn't figure out how to put into words.

P_Bomb5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

Thanks.

Good games come in all different shapes and sizes imo. For an RPG, Demon's Souls is not a long campaign by any means, but I've beat it 3 times and platinumed it. Shortest campaign I've ever put over a hundred hours into, lol. Enjoyed every replay, and I'd gladly do it again.

nix5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

Heavenly Sword was short.. but it probably has the best quality which most of the titles still can't match. too bad the devs themselves complained so much even after getting 1.8 million sales (which i think is great specially when it's a new IP).

and i totally agree with insomnium2.

EDIT: @thereapersson (below): yeah dude.. i was kinda pissed how reviewers dumbed down the scores but out of of the blue comes the devs themselves and talk crap out of the blues. well... i wonder what they have to say about Enslaved now.

thereapersson5585d ago

Sony gave them everything during the PS3's early days, and 1.8 million copies of a game that was a brand new IP is pretty damn good. Many other prominent PS3 games don't even sell that much.

The karma for their asinine bitching was in the form of Enslaved's relatively poor performance and sales.

Malebaria5585d ago

Agreed. It makes me sad though; as a studio they had all the possibilities to become a top-tier studio after Heavenly Sword but they digged themselves a hole.

jneul5585d ago

^^ Don't worry maybe they will learn they shafted over their real fanbase, they could easily make heavenly sword 2 using the same engine they used for the first one and guess what they would probably profit this time around, i'll be surprised if they even manage to break even on enslaved

Alos885585d ago

Nowadays I rent short games and only buy the ones I could never complete in a rental. I just can't justify spending £40 on a 3-6 hour game unless it has multiplayer.

insomnium25585d ago

You can you know...wait a few weeks/months and buy the game new with half the price....?

UnSelf5585d ago

so i guess back when games were only 2-4 hrs long MAX back in snes, sega days u mustve rented every single game

rmw2hot5585d ago

A very high percentage of ps3 owners buying KZ3 is 4 the online multiplayer including myself the single player is a bonus is eyes. I wouldn't care if it was a hour long cause I'll be spending my time playing multiplayer until KZ4 comes out.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic547d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23547d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1547d ago (Edited 547d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger537d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1113d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1113d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1112d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491112d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381113d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1113d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1113d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381113d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1113d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761113d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM1112d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1112d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1113d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1113d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1113d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

DSOGaming writes: "While Sony does not plan to release Killzone 3 on the PC, Yahfz shared a video that gives us a glimpse at what such a PC version could look like."

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1864d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1864d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1864d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1864d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1864d ago
Vegamyster1864d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1863d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1863d ago (Edited 1863d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

AzubuFrost1864d ago

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1864d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1863d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1864d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

The RPCS3 devs are doing great work. And Kami works nicely with it too it seems.
Very neat.

Magatsuhi1863d ago

Been playing mgo on pc with mouse. It's not perfect but I can make it work.

Binarycode1863d ago

2 is the better game.

A Remake would be good. 60fps 2-4k

Omar3li1863d ago

60fps is peasant for FPS games now
