Does Killzone 3 Really Need Move?

Principal programmer at Guerrilla, Tommy de Roos, headed the development for Move-Killzone lovemaking and suggests that the hardcore FPS audience is simply in a time of “transition”. He talks about the downside and upsides to using Move for Killzone 3. What do you think? Do games like KZ3 need Move?

I think it works without Move.

NecrumSlavery5502d ago

Does it? I swore the box said 'Move Required.'

Dramscus5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

You can use both the dualshock3 (sixaxis) or the move and nav controller/ds3. Move is just an option not required. It's probably the same playstation move compatible logo that LBP2 has.

The writer of this opinion piece is out to lunch. The move controls are totally sick. Like totally massively the best way to control a shooter since two analogue sticks. I kid you not. I played move with MAG and it's ridiculously touchy, nearly impossible to play in a competitive way. Killzone however has it going on, looking around, aiming, shooting, reloading, and throwing grenades with it all feel totally natural. It's difficult to go back and play other games with a controller.
It does indeed have a few training wheels but if your inaccurate with your wrist motions it still won't hit where you want.
The thing I find is it's easier to track and lead people with the move than a controller.
With a controller strafing seems to be the best way to keep a bead on a body. With the move your tracking guys with your gun. You can be strafing too, and it works well but Move is a totally different and more realistic way of playing. I became immersed in the game much more quickly. Going on a melee kill streak was way more exciting when I'm stabbing out each time for the kill. Aiming your controller rather than waggling your stick to aim just feels more gun like.

I know I'll get a bunch of disagrees. If your people that were playing it with the move and found it hard to control you just have to tweak the settings quite a bit. I like to aim two or three inches past the edges of the screen so the cursor is slowed right down then crank up the cursor sensitivity. I usually use about %60 because that feels manageable for me. I also adjust the targeting boxes to %0 so the screen moves with the aimer, and put target lock to cursor, though I'll turn it off after a while (it's just training wheels). This puts camera control completely under control of the move without the game auto deciding where you want it or trying to guess where your looking, or hitting the turn box unexpectedly because the turn box is as small as it gets your always in it. Also about the cursor lock it doesn't really help a ton, it's no more than the aim assist in black ops. If your bad at aiming youll still miss most of the time the gun just drags a bit if someone runs by. I figure after a few hours spent practicing it'll be safe to turn off.

sickbird5502d ago

Yea the Move works great with killzone 3. People just don't have the patience to learn a new control scheme. Once you get used the move its just as good if not better than the DS3. I know personally my aim is a hell of alot better with the move.

TheLastGuardian5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

Move support is a great addition to a game I was already planning on buying. I tryed it out in the beta and it handicapped me a little at first but as I got more used to it, it just felt natural. I can see myself getting really good in multiplayer If I keep practicing with Move.

Aiming the crosshairs with Move is very precise but moving the camera can be a bit tricky. I think I will use Move for my entire first playthrough of the campaign and the DS3 most of the time online. Brutal melee is definitely harder with move. You have to thrust your arm forward when you get close enough and if you miss, the camera will turn all the way around and you will most likely get killed.

It's a great new experience for me. If you've been waiting for a great core game to play with Move like I have, KZ3 is your game.

zootang5502d ago

The Move controlled players top the Killzone 3 beta leader boards.

bageara5502d ago

is that right? if so and MOVE users are at advantage its going to cause a lot off Move controllers to start flying off the shelves, myself included

sickbird5502d ago

@zootang how do you know that?

NecrumSlavery5502d ago

I should of added the "/s"

Holy heck N4G, you are harsh. NecrumSlavery is my PSN. look me up and see I am not a Sony hater. That was a joke.

KZ3 works great with the DS3, but Move is suprisingly awesome. I figured it would work, but man it works really well. I actually see myself using the Move more than the DS3. I need to get a Nav, cause using the DS3 for the left hand, tho it isn't bad, isn't as good.

AKS5502d ago

I'm still not completely used to using Move, but when it works, it really works well. I found myself struggling in certain situations, but I also at times was able to clean about a room of enemies with rapid headshots in a manner that I am certain I could not have pulled off with a controller. Move is downright nasty if you use a weapon that has at least semi-decent accuracy when shooting "from the hip." Very fast and precise.

I also thought Killzone 3 has better Move controls overall. I adjusted to KZ3's Move controls much faster over a much briefer period of time. The Move controls just feels smoother and more natural to me in KZ3.

specialguest5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

At the people who didn't detect NecrumSlavery's sarcasm.

We've been testing Killzone 3 with MOVE for months now. It works but not as well as the controller.

Some will enjoy it but will ultimately go back to the controller.

a_bro5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

"We've been testing Killzone 3 with MOVE for months now. It works but not as well as the controller."

WRONG. it works better than a controller, at least for me. i kid you not. i get more kills than deaths because of this, and that's with AIM ASSIST OFF, for those that doubt me.

People that say that its not good for online is a MYTH, and thats because they havent tried it yet, or havent played enough of it to the point were they are finally comfortable with using it.

tastelessgamer5502d ago

Haha I love how you say WE are WRONG! Haha
Ok.

Anyways, just our opinion. Nothing for you to get all pissy about.

a_bro5502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

im just posting the facts. if it works for me, it would work for anyone.

I had the move for a few months already, i began doubting its controls for core gaming. that was until i played the beta with the Move Controls.

People who are uncomfortable with Move controls must know it was exactly like the time they started playing with analog joypad controls at first (like DualShock 1), hard to control at first, then once you got used to it and balanced yourself out with it, you started to play for real. just like a bike with Training wheels, once you balanced yourself on the bike, you remove your training wheels.

Move is the same exact thing.

NicSage5502d ago

Move is the only way for me.

karl5502d ago

move is better than the dualshock3

still the dualshock has some advantage over move in some areas..

but i cant find anything that would make me choose the DS3 over mouse like accuracy...

im not going back

Need is such a strong word that really is unfairly used in anything.

Do we need to go see movies? Do we need to own a home? Do we need flat screen TVs?

Do we need Move support? Nope. But, it's an option that expands on the options that gamers have to enjoy their games. And, if we start wondering if providing more options to gamers is bad, then I feel we may be heading down the wrong path.

hamburger1235502d ago (Edited 5502d ago )

Do we really need this article?

xAlmostPro5502d ago

Course it works with dualshock.

No killzone 3 doesn't need Move, but it's a nice option and i'd say Move needs killzone 3.. it made the Move appeal to hardcore gamers.

otherZinc5502d ago

SONY & GG need to stop with the stupid s***!

Killzone 3 needs ONLINE CO-OP!

I think move is unnecessary

nycredude5502d ago

I think articles like this are more unnecessary.

ColinKapow5502d ago

Im still not too sure about it, maybe when the motion controls are a little older on the ps3 it wouldve been a better idea

Doctorofreality5502d ago

Move has a fair price tag i think, and it's cool to know it's there on Killzone3 if you want it, but realistically people who are going to be in it forthe multiplayer (in the long run atleast) aren't going to want to shootthemselves in the foot when they're trying to get comfy on their chair are they?

Competitions.
think bout it

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic463d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23463d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger454d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

1Victor1029d ago

SullysCigar1029d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1029d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491029d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381029d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1029d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1029d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381029d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1029d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761029d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1029d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1029d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1029d ago (Edited 1029d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1029d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1029d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1780d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1780d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1780d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1780d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1780d ago
Vegamyster1780d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1780d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1780d ago (Edited 1780d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

AzubuFrost1780d ago

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1780d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1779d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1780d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
