GamePro: Killzone 3 Review

It doesn't ever rise above the level of a good popcorn movie. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that -- people shamelessly enjoy movies that fall into this category all the time -- but then again, there's really nothing memorable about it either.

Ninver5498d ago

Not the best of scores but hey, judging from the open beta i've played so far? either the people reviewing KZ3 are casual gamers or they just don't appreciate a masterpiece.

UNCyrus5498d ago

I stopped reading after Tae (the reviewer) called SOCOM an FPS.

SasanovaS19875498d ago

"As is often the case with games reviewed before release, I didn't get to fully test out the multiplayer before writing my review. I did take into consideration the fact that it exists and that it adds value to the overall package when deciding on my score -- it didn't exactly move the needle, but it helped. There were review sessions set up for members of the press, but the sessions I sat in on weren't fully populated, so it didn't feel fair to use that experience for the purposes of reviewing the online modes."

move along people, nothing to see here. guy never played the game

ActionBastard5498d ago

I hate half-assed reviews from half-assed reviewers. If you're not going to fully give MP in ANY game a go, don't review it. Period.

arika5498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

a lot of reviewers seem pretty scared of this game for some reason, that they want to downplay the strength of this game which is the multiplayer aspect and focus on all fps's weakness which is their story! i am getting more hype up for this game than ever, i feel like buying ten copies of killzone 3 just to piss off this so called reviewers.

thereapersson5498d ago

Those two posts are why anyone who takes this review seriously should be shot in the face.

That reviewer should be discredited from ever writing a game review again.

BattleAxe5498d ago

I would be courious to see how Game Pro reviewed Halo Reach, and if they made multiplayer a larger part of the review. My guess is that they spent alot more time playing that game because of the hype surrounding Halo.

Game Pro = Unprofessional

Pixelated_Army5498d ago

these people aren't gamers just a bunch of dorks working a 9 to 5.

lame

Anon19745498d ago

"As is often the case with games reviewed before release, I didn't get to fully test out the multiplayer before writing my review."

Jesus Christ. With a game like this that is about the multiplayer more so then it's about the first person campaign - how on earth could any self respecting reviewer offer up a review of a title without trying one of the most important aspects of the game. Delay your review if you can't review the multiplayer at the moment! How hard is that? Or get enough staff to test the game.

And what about the co-op? Bet you didn't even attempt it. You might as well have only played the first 15 minutes of this game and written your review based on that. What a ridiculous "review". It's like reviewing a play based on only the first act.

The solution is to release your review after release, or spend some time with the beta (it's been out several days).

That said, I really enjoy the beta. I have to say, though, that they need dedicated Move servers. Move users are no competition against dual-shockers.

saint_john_paul_ii5498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

"That said, I really enjoy the beta. I have to say, though, that they need dedicated Move servers. Move users are no competition against dual-shockers."

its quite the opposite. people who have move are on par with Dualshock Users or surpassing them while playing together in the Beta.

My experience with Move is amazing. I suck at FPS with Dualshock, but with Move, i get more kills than Deaths, no aim assist or anything. it really is a mouse like peripheral.

Orange5498d ago

well, then clearly i just suck using the Move, but I'm glad to hear others are using it with success. I'll use Move with the SP campaign - it works well - I just personally can't react nearly as quickly. My K/D ratio went way up when I switched back to DS.

plumber155497d ago

No competition your joking right i used the move the who time in that beta and i was at the top of the leader board several times while playing . All you have to do is practice , I practiced a lot with modern domination . And how do you know who is a move player or not ? Oh and modern domination is the best bang for your buck if you want a game for the move or even a DS3 either way great fun in that game .

Implying Killzone 3 is a masterpiece

come on

Eeeeeeeeevery PS3 exclusive is a masterpiece right?

Why beat around the bush here, KZ3 is just a pretty FPS, nothing more.

starcrafter5498d ago

>Implying KZ3 isn't a masterpiece
The MP is really amazing, you have to play it for yourself. Operations and warzone are fantastic - warzone was one of the best things to happen to FPS games in recent years. Favourite FPS game by far.

ChristianGamer5498d ago

Ok the MP is amazing, great but that does not make the entire game a masterpiece does it?
Have you played the game as a whole? No? Then maybe you should keep the masterpiece nonsense on hold until you actually play the game.
Quit the conspiracy theories people, if a game is not perfect, it won't get scored that way

HeavenlySnipes5498d ago

the MP is fantastic and really, really accessible for newer gamers this time around. I doubt the SP is as shit as reviewers make it because games like MW2 got 0s everywhere and what do you know, the best points in the review are on the MP. MW2 had a shitty story yet it gets a free pass, as I doubt you have played the open beta, you wouldn't know just how amazing KZ3 is.

Insanelyman5498d ago

All you guys need to shut up and stop it. None of you have played the game at all so stop calling it a masterpiece. And yes I have played the open beta and yes its very impressive. But seriously guys just stop it already there have been A LOT I mean A LOT reviews saying the story is bad. And you know what maybe there right for once but lets wait and see when the game comes to judge ourselfs. Also not every PS3 exclusive is perfect ya know!!!

Why do people get bent out of shape over a score?

Consider a couple of things. Multiplayer is separate from single player and many reviews judge a game solely by the single player experience.

Following this logic, if many reviewers are calling the single player so-so and short, your going to have many reviews that weight the game overall more harshly. NOTE: this is not my opinion as I haven't played anything but the beta.

The multiplayer seems to be the meat and potatoes of Killzone 3. If the game was reviewed based on the merits of the multiplayer, perhaps the score would be higher for many websites. Regardless, there seems to be a lot to love in Killzone 3 and I have it pre-ordered through Home :-)

a_bro5498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

"Why do people get bent out of shape over a score?"

reason behind this:

COD gets a free pass with the crap single Player campaigns the franchise gets with its average 5-hour playtime, meanwhile KZ3 gets S**ted on for it, while they pass on the multiplayer which is one of the main aspects of the game.

its not right and this crap has to stop. I am by no means saying that I have played the single player, no game is perfect. But based at what i played from the Multiplayer, it plays way better than the stupid yearly COD crap that we get from activision. but when hyped games like COD get a free pass and Killzone gets raped by the review scores, it pisses everyone off.

palaeomerus5498d ago

" Why do people WHO HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED THE GAME EXCEPT FOR THE MP BETA get bent out of shape over a score? "

Fixed.

dragunrising5498d ago

@ palaeomerus

Agreed. The game isn't out and no one has played the single player game. For now, we only have reviewers respected and less so, to give us their OPINIONS.

Not everyone is going to like every aspect or even most aspects of any game. I for one appreciate the K3 multiplayer beta and it convinced me to buy the game. I bought Move for Killzone 3 and it plays better than any game that currently supports it.

XactGamer5498d ago

Dirty Beaver you played the open beta and the reviewers have played the full game. Guess which one is in a better position to review the game? How can you say it's a "masterpiece" when you havn't played the whole game?

So the game hasn't scored as high as you wished, get the f**k over it.

HeavenlySnipes5498d ago

The game came out already and reviewers have played online with the many people that have preordered the game/s

No one has played the game in its entirety, reviwers can't use the beta for a full MP review so they only review the SP. So yeah, they don't really have any real position to review only half the damn game.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5498d ago

It means 5/5 with fully MP tested.

TBM5498d ago

Meh that's his opinion it wont affect my decision to spend my hard earned money on a game I know im going to love and enjoy.

My opinion matters more than his or anyone elses.

shooterexpert5498d ago

Kz3 beta is horrible. :/ it lacks something.

It looks pretty but man it plays like crap.

SoSLy5498d ago

I bet you havent even played it yet..

poopsack5498d ago

^reviewers are reviewing the SP to much.
Pretty sad if you think about this:
If KZ3 was Online Only, it would have better scores

DoomeDx5498d ago

MAG was good, but not THAT good.
IMO the reviews for MAG were decent.

(Yeah, feel free to disagree.)

Orange5498d ago

or how about Warhawk...which was brilliant, by the way.

gorebago5498d ago

i referred to how it was online only.

yeah i forgot about warhawk - that game was really fun

the way i look at modern fps is that the single player is a mere glorified tutorial for the mp which is what most people spend their time playing. at least for now.

Orange5498d ago

"the single player is a mere glorified tutorial for the mp"

I think that's a true statement, actually.

SasanovaS19875498d ago

king055498d ago

Is anyone else alarmed at the fact that they are treating this game like it's campaign based? He admitted he didn't properly test out the multiplayer.

Ninver5498d ago

It's double standards and they aren't even trying to hide it. Reputable "journalism" is dead.

gorebago5498d ago

well it is gamepro. that mag hasn't been relevant since pogs were popular.

Mr Tretton5498d ago

lol, pogs and stealing Gamepros from the library. I just had a flashback.

GiggMan5498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

You're right. What's next, reviewers are going to start just reviewing the single player for sports games, racing games, etc?

labaronx5498d ago

if it's only review part of it

tobysims5498d ago

So now Killzone is a multi player franchise?!?Killzone 2 built a reputation of having horrid multi player. multi player was to blame for it falling short of other FPS by many gamers.

Figboy5498d ago

tobysims,
to me, that comment just tells me that you've never played Killzone MP.

The multi-player in the original, PlayStation 2 Killzone was one of the BEST things about that game.

Killzone 2 multi-player feels really good, and, being a primarily single player gamer, I was pleasantly surprised at how addicting KZ2 MP was. The overwhelming consensus regarding Killzone 2 is that the single player was good, but the MP was REALLY GOOD. I loved the KZ2 SP, but to each his own.

I've only played the Killzone 3 Beta, but so far, it feels like an improvement over Killzone 2's MP.

This is a clear bit of applying Double Standards to their reviews.

Call of Duty has a HORRID single player campaign, and yet it gets passes for that, because the MP is so good.

Killzone 2 (and from the looks of it, 3), has a quality story and single player campaign (better than CoD), AND it has awesome MP, and yet reviews are focusing primarily on the SP, when disregarding it in other titles.

If that is not hypocrisy and double standards, then WHAT IS IT?

People wouldn't complain about reviews so much if they DARED to apply the same standards to all of their reviews.

Apparently, if you were Bioshock and 360 exclusive back in 2007, it didn't matter if you were a 10 hour, SP only game.

But if you were Uncharted: Drake's Fortune in 2007, it was a HUGE DEAL that you were a 10 hour, SP only game.

The replay value was just as strong in Uncharted as it was in Bioshock (fun games can ALWAYS be replayed over and over and over again; my 6 playthroughs of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune attests to that).

All most of us want is some CONSISTENCY. The gaming media has continuously failed at giving us that consistency when reviewing games. Just look at the hole that Edge has dug themselves into in terms of their credibility. According to them, EVERY SINGLE PlayStation 3 exclusive barring LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted are 6/10, 7/10 games. Not even the most hater of the haters would say that 99% of the PS3's library is crap. That's as stupid as saying that 99% of the Xbox 360's library is crap, or, according to Edge, 9/10 games (which is what they've scored MOST Xbox 360 exclusives barring a few).

I haven't read GamePro since high school (that would be the early 90's for me). I don't plan on giving them any more than a passing glance these days.

for god sakes, gaming journalism nowadays is a joke. Its as though the PS3 is Obama and all these gaming sites are fox news... how can you logically give black ops perfect scores but not even give kz3 atleast a 9?

Biggest5498d ago

Well, let's be fair to Black Ops. It has things that Killzone 3 only dreams (nightmares) of having. The completely broken online alone sets Black Ops apart from most shooters.

funkycoldmedina5498d ago

@Biggest, thanks for the chuckle. lol :P +1

AnonUser55555498d ago

Lol @ the continued efforts by the anti CoD trolls who cant seem to accept the fact that they are the minority.

Guess kz3 isnt gods gift to gamers after all?

El_Colombiano5498d ago

lol at the CoD trolls who think the game takes any skill at all online.

TKCMuzzer5498d ago

Or the COD fanatics who can't admit it's the same game they made four years ago, is to easy, adds nothing to the genre and oh yeah IT DOESN'T WORK.

GarandShooter5498d ago

Exactly how are the CoD fans the majority? With approximately 100 million 360s and PS3s combined sales, CoD would need to sell over 50 million copies on consoles alone to be in the majority, not even taking into account PC gamers. Fans of any game are in the minority.

HappyGoLucky755498d ago

The game is rather similar, you're right. And guess what? Still better than everything else on the market.

AnonUser55555498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

TKC:

a) If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I still have more fun playing CoD games than any other FPS that comes out. I fully realize they aren't changing much year to year, and I'm ok with that because I like the product

b) "IT DOESN'T WORK." Spoken like a true person who's not played the game. The game works just fine son. Wonder how I've managed to log 3 days worth of gaming into something that doesn't work? If a game lobby closes, it's because the Host quit. No big deal. Setup into another game within 5 seconds. Life is hard.

Garand:
"Majority" refers to the fact that more console gamers (I have no desire to get in a console vs. pc debate) play CoD than just about every other FPS out there, ESPECIALLY on the ps3. Halo might have more for the 360 folk. But when you analyze sales year after year, the popularity of the CoD games is not really up for debate. IF you can't at least understand THAT much, you're not worth engaging in an argument with.

_____

I'm pretty much a ps3 only gamer. I have a wii that's been gathering dust for a while now, but otherwise only play the ps3. And even so, the ridiculous PS3 bias on N4G is really getting on my nerves.

Not every ps3 exclusive is a slam dunk. We don't have to all love kz3 just because it's on ps3. but now it's more of an issue that you damn fanboys have been going ON and ON for weeks about how much better kz3 will be than black ops, and now your pride can't handle the possibility that kz3 is rather mediocre.

ZombieNinjaPanda5498d ago

@igKurz8

I'm sure you've heard this analogy before, but the way I see it. Call of Duty is the McDonalds of gaming. It's shitty and everyone thinks it's good, but in reality, it's simply shitty.

AnonUser55555498d ago

Gotta love the vocal minority who thinks their opinion is more important than everyone else's.

@ ZombieNinjaPanda

"I'm sure you've heard this analogy before, but the way I see it. Call of Duty is the McDonalds of gaming. It's shitty and everyone thinks it's good, but in reality, it's simply shitty."

Right because everyone's opinion is TOTALLY WRONG and ZombieNinjaPanda and his hand-picked, chosen disciples are the sole valid arbiters of reality who get to determine what's right. Killzone 3 was robbed of it's automatic PS3 exclusive 90%+ score by teh conspiracy and M$ moneyhat$. OMG!!1!

You know what's shitty dude? Your lame shitty argument is what's shitty.

Here's an idea. At least PLAY THE GAME before you build your castle walls of old dried bull shit to protect you from opinions you don't like. At least Gamepro did THAT MUCH before they published anything. THEN when you are properly informed of what playing through KillZone 3's campaign is actually like, you can disagree with Gamepro and ACTUALLY HAVE IT MEAN SOMETHING.

palaeomerus5498d ago (Edited 5498d ago )

" for god sakes, gaming journalism nowadays is a joke"

So is gaming fandom though, Helghast Drake. LOL! I'm sure you're not a very objective source of criticism with a user name like that. I might as well ask Mario-Samus-Link if the low scoring reviews of Mario Sports Mix are fair.

What's the biggest joke is those guys who think they are such great critics themselves, that they can successfully discredit any review they see, that has a score lower than they wanted to hear, or mentions a complaint about the game, all based ENTIRELY on a multiplayer beta that a lot of people could barely connect to.

Yeah, it's a regular freakin' joke-a-rama up in here. You obviously have SO MUCH to teach GamePro about reviewing games that they played and you didn't.LOL.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic458d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1775d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1775d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1775d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1775d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1775d ago
Vegamyster1775d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1775d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1775d ago (Edited 1775d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

MadLad1774d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1775d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
