What I learned from working at GAME

Nathan Blades: Being a student with a pressing need to pay for rent, groceries, and alcohol, I was pumped to get a job working at a GAME over the winter holidays. Initially it felt great to earn my own money - rather than it being supplied by my parents or the government - but as I worked there, what I learned changed by views on games retail slightly.

Number 4 is interesting.

Christmas and birthday present shopping by parents buying overpriced games for their kids?

The only reason I’d go near GAME would be to browse the trade-in-section looking for something different, cheap or interesting.

multiman5632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

Actually for someone in Aussie land buying from game online uk is a really cheap option, if you combine it with dvd.co, zavvi, shopto you can get some really cheap games, plus they deliver worldwide for very cheap. But from a stores in Australia point of view they are always very expensive, although so are eb and even jb is becoming expensive.

Also I find that he is taking his one little store and making it sound like worldwide sales, for instance cod, heaps of guys on my list have it on release night playing each version, so yeah it does sell as good as everyone make it sound.

Venatus-Deus5632d ago

Online is very different to in-store my friend.

There is usally a markup of around 20%. Thats why 4 was interesting, because I wonder who is actually spending £££ in store?

Quagmire5632d ago

Stranger things have happened.

Lucreto5632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

If you work in retail you do get the odd people coming around all the time. I work in retail and we lost £500 worth of mens trousers because some man used them as a urinal.

NoobSessions5632d ago

Lol'd at #3.

Not really, but thats funny.

tigertron5632d ago

I'm surprised GAME or Gamestation still exist. I mean, who wants to pay for their over priced stock?

Corrwin5632d ago

Parents, Grandparents, people who want to get credit for old games.

The 2nd hand market pretty much keeps high-street game stores in business, it's at least half of their profits.

tigertron5632d ago

To be fair, you'll probably get more on Ebay.

P1NKY5632d ago

I don't see how they are overpriced? They sell new games for roughly £35 - £40 which is the exact same as online. Plus if I trade any game on release day of a game I want I get an extra £5 off that new game aswell as the trade in value of my game.

So basically I could trade in a really old game that would usually have a trade in value of like £1 but get £6 for it instead.

Not only that, I traded in Black Ops around the end of Jan and got £34 in-store credit which basically pays for Killzone 3 that I want.

Please give me some examples of why they sell overpriced stock as their prices are usually the same as online retailers.

Nicaragua5632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

Just because you are happy to pay £35 - £40 (its actually more like £35 - £50 depending on the title) dosnt mean they are not overpriced.

Supermarkets like Asda are offering far better prices on games and so are winning business away from Game. Black Ops was £26 in Asda on launch day, EA Sports Active 2 is £40 in Asda compared to £65 on the high streets, Vanquish was £25 at launch in Asda.

Asda also discount games well before the high street. BFBC2 was £25 3 months after launch.

And yeah Asda is a massive supermarket with the power to undercut but GAME is a dedicated gaming store who shoudl be able to provide a better value service - but they dont, which is why they dont get my business anymore.

dead_eye5632d ago

You can't say game are over priced compared to asda.
Asda sell games at a big loss because it gets you in the store

Nicaragua5632d ago (Edited 5632d ago )

Thats not true. One of my friends is a purchasing manager for Asda and has confirmed that they do not sell games at a loss.

The amount of profit they make might be tiny or they might just sell it at cost price and make you buy X amount of groceries but it they are never sold at a loss.

And like i said GAME is a dedciated gaming retail store with over a decade of experience and supplier contacts. If they cant compete at what they specialise in then what is the point of their existence ?

shaun mcwayne5632d ago

game and gamestation uk are turning into trade in shops most of the stock are trade ins.

outwar60105632d ago

trade in stores with shit credit for your games and then they sell for near full price cex ftw

xAlmostPro5632d ago

you don't get shit credit if the game is new or still bought often..

The way to work out what you'll get i think(my own opinion that has seemed true) is say you go to trade in god of war 3, and they're selling it pre-owned for say £23 you'll get around £13 for it

P1NKY5632d ago

I traded in Black Ops end of Jan, which they were selling pre-owned at the time for about £37 and got £34 in-store credit. That's more than 2 months after it's release.

I don't think GameStation is overpriced, they sell at the same prices as online retailers.

Not only do you get an extra £5 on top of your trade-in if you trade in a game on another games release day but you also get an extra few £££ off if you pre-ordered it.

So in the end I could end up walking out of the shop with a £40 game which only cost me £30 just because I pre-ordered it and traded-in a really old game that was worth nothing.

outwar60105631d ago

what?????????? ive bought games and tried to exchange them a week later due to completion and they say like 12 pounds exchange or 4.30 cash after me paying the FULL retail of 40 from game. cex give like 30 cash or 25 exchange for 40 pound games which is sooo much better but you have to put up with the smell of the place and the bigfazeek like employees(albeit just happened once)

trying to pre order, my god the site is slow lol

-Foxtrot4044d ago (Edited 4044d ago )

I've got it in my basket but it keeps telling me there is an error when I hit secure checkout.

Is anyone else experiencing this

Now it's telling me my delivery address isn't there when it is.

God I hate GAMES site

TLG19914044d ago

yes exactly the same saying error with checking product stock and also keep getting rid of my address and telling me to amend it.

never mind its just worked keep trying!!!!!

lpking20054044d ago

Just done mine, ok.

Be careful of the £20 deposit which is for the Vault Club.
It adds it as a separate item in your basket.
Just remove it if you want.
They make it sound like its mandatory to have.

GAME are cheeky bastards for stuff like that!

YoMma4044d ago

Todd Howard described this edition as "the best stupid gimmick of all time". I think he was right. I imagine this edition will sell out.

Zichu4044d ago (Edited 4044d ago )

Can't preorder the X1 version because the button isn't appearing at all. Been waiting for a bit now...

EDIT: Ok, the button has just appeared. Now it's just slow so I will have to keep pushing forward to get my copy. :D

thesmiteking4044d ago

yeah, I did note that in the article, I'm not sure why...I'm sure they'll fix it up soon enough.

Zichu4044d ago

I'm hoping it works before I go to work today... Don't fancy coming back to it being sold out or something...

Zichu4044d ago (Edited 4044d ago )

Has anyone managed to actually preorder it? It's in my basket, but I am getting error's with my address. Tried updating it and adding a new one, yet it says the same thing...

EDIT: Got mine preordered!!!

showtimefolks4044d ago

i got the limited edition for fallout 3, i think i want this too. My only issue is i am not much of a collector so maybe i should just buy the game and enjoy it. And let someone who really wants to to buys it

Kingscorpion714044d ago

I wonder what game will be GOTY Fallout 4,Witcher3,Bloodborne,Batman,o r Metal Gear Solid?

Multiplatguy4044d ago

It's a good year in gaming when you have so many contenders. The Witcher 3 is blowing my away but the fanboy in me wants to say Fallout 4!

Game the only shop to sell second hand games for more than brand new.

https://twitter.com/TLG1991...

Zichu4056d ago

I don't buy from GAME, their prices are ridiculous. I just looked up Bloodborne. It's £49.99, brand new. £42.99, preowned.

I can get it off Amazon, brand new, for £36...

I prefer any other site than GAME.

spacedelete4056d ago

its 55 in store. online is 50. prices like that are the reason i've stopped buying games and just playing my backlog.

Zichu4056d ago

£55 in store O.o

That's an absolute **** take. I can't believe so many people still buy games from them. I've been in there to look around, compare prices, just general browsing. It's always packed in there and people are always buying stuff.

I can understand a lot of people are very misinformed and don't bother looking anywhere else, but you can definitely save a lot of money by shopping online or even get a few games extra for the same price they are paying throughout the year.

pompombrum4055d ago

Lol why do you think GAME keep doing deals to get exclusive editions for their stores? Only way they can get smart gamers to go into their stores.

ThichQuangDuck4056d ago

Interesting for limited editions but standard editions no reason to instant preorder

dimasok4056d ago

The Game. Ignore the hub as the games are announced.

roguedragon14056d ago

Dont even get me started on my hate for game man do they the piss, they are so bad every time I trade in there I have get them to check cex's prices so they can bump up the exchange rate. Bunch of greedy bastards.

I'm going this evening, can't wait.
Will be good to be able to get past all the empty blustering from both sides here and elsewhere (this game is going to be awesome/terrible even though I've not played it, but just because of the console I prefer) and actually get some hands on with the games
