Why 3D isn't "helpful" for DiRT 3

Stereoscopic 3D has been touted as the next big thing for racing games – indeed Sony claims 3D gives gamers a "competitive edge". But for one upcoming racing game the tech does more harm than good – and can even make you feel sick.

The game is DiRT 3, the rally racer from Codemasters, which supports stereoscopic 3D only in a basic way on PC - and not at all on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Chief game designer Paul Coleman explained to Eurogamer why.

More options to play your games the better. I don't have a 3D TV myself, but I am not going to be butthurt over it like some people.

I'm just holding out until the 3d projectors come a little further down in price. Not ready to part with my 92" screen quite yet.

I think what's really going to be telling in the comments section is how many are actually going to read the article as opposed to simply yelling "Yeah! 3D no goods!"

To save you that embarrassment, let me sum up for you. Dirt's developer has nothing against 3D and even goes on to say they're looking into it's uses. He comments that 3D wasn't right for their game as opposed to a game like Motorstorm. This isn't a 3D bashing piece. If you want to bash 3D, there's plenty of articles out there that you'll feel right at home with. This isn't one of them.

Myself, I think 3D is an evolution in gaming - if done right. The ability to judge depth and have particles flying out of the screen at you adds another level of immersion to games and if you're one of the few that get's motion sick from 3D, hang in there. Research says it's an issue with your brain seeing movement but not feeling it that gives the headaches and nausea. If you get used to it, like other forms of motion sickness, it'll pass. I've known people in the past that get motion sickness simply playing first person shooters, but it will go away in time if the doctors are to be believed. That's not a reason to hate on 3D anymore than it is to condemn all boats because you get sea sick.

I think 3D is going to be a helluva ride. Although it's use in movies are often regulated to cheap "It's coming right outta the screen! Ooooh!" gimmicky effects, movies like Avatar show the power of 3d when handled with respect to your audience. In videogames, 3D is a natural next step as far as I'm concerned.

Last evening I played Stardust HD & Pacific Rift in 3D. Absolutely AMAZING. Hope more games will follow.

Have you seen played dirt 2 on the PC in 3D? Water and mud flying in your face when you drive over puddles. Seeing dirt kicking in your face as driving on a dusty trail. If anything 3D will more of a reason to buy this game.

Lol. 3D isn't helpful at all. Nothing comes towards you in the first place if you drive like you should. Unless you crash...

In-depth Review: DiRT 3 Complete Edition - Electronic Theatre

I was going to go with something like this when I put my setup together a couple months ago but I prefer the illumination, razor sharp detail and vibrancy of back lit displays vs projectors. I have a top of the line 1080p projector in my basement theater and it doesn't compare to my Samsung D8000 LED's. My projector is slightly faster for gaming but not for dynamic lighting, vibrancy, illumination and fine details.

I do love how the projector completely eliminates the bezels but mine are barely 1/2" wide (main reason I went with the models I did, smallest bezel on the market) and you don't even notice them using the cockpit view. Usually the supports for the windshield run directly over my bezels.

The immersion level of either setup is just unreal and blows everyone I have shown it too in person. If only consoles support this technology. No more camping corners in shooters.
