Game Over: Dead Space 2 Review

There are a couple of interesting levels or sequences throughout the game, and the production values are obviously high, but Dead Space 2 is blatantly uninspired. The first game had a real problem with feeling like it was designed by committee ("Let's make Resident Evil 4... in space... with a gravity gun and a time-slowing mechanic!"), and DS2's deliberately omitted just about everything that made the original game at all interesting or potentially frightening, and replaced it with fight scenes.

This review makes the game sound frustrating. What's his problem though will monstores spawning behind you? Partly what made the original scary.

Sarcasm5588d ago (Edited 5588d ago )

Actually it was kind of annoying to have them spawn behind and then tackle me out of nowhere.

But honestly it wasn't a big issue and didn't break the game for me. It just made me wanna kill them even more and then rage stomp em 15 more times. :)

peowpeow5588d ago

I'd understand it to be an issue during the Hardcore playthroughs :) but that's life

DigitalAnalog5588d ago (Edited 5588d ago )

As much as this game surpasses it's predecessor in gameplay mechanics, I feel there is a lot of cheap "shots" where enemies HAVE to be behind you regardless where you stand. Maybe it's because I'm playing in the hard mode, but all in all, it gets tiring when a good stategy suddenly goes awry simply because enemies "spawn" behind you as opposed to attacking you from strategic places (like vents from the first game).

Also, using the "limb" strategy may have worked if it wasn't so damn difficult to pick them up. Most of the time I end up picking bodies instead of the sharp claws I've dismembered. DS2 has everything down except it arises more issues that made DS1 so good. The game was obviously inspired by the likes of Bioshock but instead, I don't really feel like I'm in a city. Just a building with many rooms to wipe off enemies.

The review seems to be a bit harsh bit he DOES have solid points.

I actually liked the fact that some Necromorphs would come from behind, because it just always kept me on my toes.

A lot of the games that I've played with a relatively linear Single Player campaign, most of the enemies that you face are almost always from the front, and it just makes the game a little less predictable to me if they come from both front and behind at times.

I remember during my first playthrough it had got to the point where as soon as I'd see an enemy coming at me from the front, I'd kill them first and then I'd almost always whip around with my gun pointed to see if there was something was behind me...and most of the time I was able to turn around quick enough to spot them before they got a shot on me.

^Digital Analog

Yeah that's justifiable. It shows that Dead Space 2 isn't a perfect game. And actually I preferred Dead Space 1 because Issac didn't talk. Personally I feel like he's bit of a one dimensional A-hole.

itsralf5588d ago

I didn't really have a problem with enemies spawning behind me. You realize that they do that and you learn to watch your back and it isn't really an issue. It's a gameplay mechanic.

The only enemies that really pissed me off were right at the end of DS2 (I believe they were in DS1, as well) that don't die, they just keep respawning their limbs. I wasted so much ammo and died about ten times. It was just frustrating. I like a challenge, but they were just cheap deaths.

nycredude5588d ago

I agree somewhat with this review. THe game was awesome but there are parts in the second half that was frustrating if you play on a harding setting for the first time. It felt a little cheap at times. I understand they wanted to make you feel tense but it was at too cheap sometimes. Although I don't agree wiht this score. Easily 80 to 90 game.

I agree 100% with this review. I thought I was the only one who felt this way about the game. Loved the first game, hate this game.

doa7665588d ago

I agree too, it was a step back from the first one, it's shorter, and cheap

bluegreenman5588d ago

this is just crazy.. this game is NO way a 60 but to each his own opinion.. i guess..

karl5588d ago

thats right.. but everyone is forgetting that when u review a game u should try to be objective... and your own opinion should come in second place...

even when a game doesnt appeal to u... u should try to see its value and a more general worth to it...

schlanz5588d ago

THANK YOU.

I am seriously so sick of people defending shite reviews by playing the opinion card.

Naturally, its impossible to be entirely objective, but like you said, you should try to see its value and why OTHER PEOPLE would enjoy the game.

When 9/10 reviews give the game high marks, its impossible to take these loner reviews seriously that imo are probably just fishing for hits. I won't give them the satisfaction.

Killzoned5588d ago

imo i thought dead space 2 brought everything to another level, I definitely enjoyed dead space but dead space 2 is even better.
This review is a troll

nskrishna25588d ago

My only issue with DS2 is that it is ACTION horror and not survival horror.
Other than that the game is fantastic and deserves 90+ scores

schlanz5588d ago

But why take issue with the game for that? Did the developers say its a survivor horror game or is that just what people wanted/hoped for?

You have to review games for what they are, not for what you wanted them to be. In other words, Dead Space 2 should be reviewed for what it is, an action game, not for what some people wanted, a survival-horror game.

Even the first Dead Space was not survival-horror. I can't remember any time in that game where I REALLY needed to conserve ammo or even just straight-up run away from enemies. It was an action-shooter all the way, and why anyone would expect the sequel to be any different is beyond me.

nskrishna25588d ago

Thank you for replying. Yes, DS was never a survival horror title. It was always action horror. Thank you for pointing it out..:)

HellzAssassin5588d ago

The original wasn't that much of a survival horror either. In fact, DS2 has more survival horror elements in it than the original. Play the game on zealot as your first run, or do a fresh start and tell me it's not a survival horror. Well, at least until 1/2-3/4's of the way throughout the game. I love the original and played through it 9 times, and I must say that DS2 is much better on every level. Although the few "humor" parts, and the lack of true horror did bother me...

But, I do agree with you regarding it's focus more on "action" horror rather than just straight up horror. I did miss that in DS1, and some of it did come back. I LOVED chapter 10, and it brought back some memories. I did enjoy Isaac's ability to finally use his voice, but he did say "fuck" a bit too much. I have no problem with cussing (as I do it quite often myself, as I shamefully admit) but it really detracts from the true essence of horror and adds more humor to it.

ANYWAYS! I LOVED DS2, and I'm on my 5th run, starting on hardcore (halfway through so far ^^) And I disagree with this review, and would have to definitely agree with the 90+ scores, as you stated.

EA Shoots Down Dead Space 2 Remake Rumors: 'No Validity to This Story'

EA has shut down rumors that EA Motive considered a Dead Space 2 remake before shelving it due to low sales of the previous game, saying there's "no validity" to the reports.

XiNatsuDragnel776d ago

Sure.... right.... at least remake dead space 3 w/o microtransactions bs.

XiNatsuDragnel775d ago

I sometimes I wished I didn't Ngl lol

Knightofelemia776d ago

Why not remake DS2 whether shot down or not it's still my favorite game next to DS1. As much as I hate EA I would buy or would have bought DS2 day one.

MeteorPanda775d ago

No validity XD "Guys guys, we cant possible make a good game or cater to the gamers wants, stop"

Yi-Long775d ago

I don't know if sales met their expectations or not. I just know that the high review scores received my attention so I was interested in buying it, but its price stayed high (50+ bucks) for so long that I simply never bothered picking it up.

Tacoboto775d ago

Doesn't pay full price
Doesn't pay *any* price
Ponders if sales met expectations regarding an allegedly canceled sequel.

Gee...

Yi-Long775d ago

Well, for starters, I'm sure there are plenty of games I never bought which did, somehow, still, meet their sales-expectations.

Concerning Dead Space; I never played and thus cared for the original. It's in multiple genres (shooter, sci-fi, horror) I don't particularly care about so it was barely on my radar pre-launch. I was never its target-audience.

When reviews hit, and it was scoring big, it gathered my interest, so while it wasn't in my field of interest, it mrans that I wanted to give it a fair shot and at least give it a try, as I do with many games across different genres; I tend to just cherry-pick the good stuff and see if it's for me or not.

But, I do wait for sales on those games I take a risk on.

Kornholic775d ago (Edited 775d ago )

Lol, you are a huge part of the problem. If a very high-quality game is not even worth 50 bucks to you, then what is?

13 Years Later, Dead Space 2 Is Still A Perfect Video Game

Nameer from eXputer: "Dead Space 2 is a sequel that delivers such a feast that by the time you're done, you're not only full but also satisfied."

Aaroncls7795d ago

It was amazing. All 3 DS games game solid for me, but 2 was special.

hombreacabado795d ago

mariopasta795d ago

Hope they remake this one too. Just like they did with number 1. The remake of Dead Space 1 was perfection

Terry_B795d ago

I had no idea that Bad Company 2 was still running, and only now that I know, I want to jump on! 😥

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa898d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno898d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac897d ago (Edited 897d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast897d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial897d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!
