Can Adventure Games Make a Comeback?

When I was growing up I fell in love with the point and click adventure genre, which was booming in the 90′s. I spent hours with games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Space Quest, and Maniac Mansion. These games were challenging and often hilarious. In game solutions were often the punchlines themselves. These days however, the genre is on life support. There is hope however: the rise of touch gaming via tablets and smart phones presents a perfect medium for the return of this once vibrant genre.

Is Snatcher and Policenauts considered to be adventure games? Those games are cult classics right now, I can't find a version on ebay for less than 100 bucks.

Metal Gear Mark II is actually from Snatcher, loved it when it appeared in MGS4! :)

Well Heavy Rain just arrived and it is brilliant. Plus LA Noire seams to take the classic adventure mystery gameplay and fuse it with the Rockstar TPS Action vibe. I would love to see a new MYST, but with motion controls as well. Maybe one day. PSN/XBL is a great way to get HD classics like Monkey Island, and Dream

At the same time I want to ask the creators of this article, "what the hell do you think Telltale Games have been doing?

I missed all the great Lucasarts adventure games, shame nowadays Lucasarts is just a name that farms out everything to other developers.

iceman065623d ago

Really!?!? That's a shame because there were some great ones. Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders were two of my favorites. I can't tell you how many times I went through those games to get the various endings and scenarios.

I'm waiting for someone to say "THEY ARE ALREADY BACK CUZ OF UNCHARTED 2".

rlm415623d ago

It's not the same as these classics.. Stop trolling.

Mmmkay5623d ago

except uncharted is rather linear and plays a lot more like a shooter than a point and click game...

Darkfiber5622d ago

Hence the joke. I am well aware that Uncharted is nowhere close to being an adventure game. PS3 fanboys, unfortunately, are not.

madpuppy5622d ago

Darkfiber, HUH? If that was a joke, It was a pretty darn bad one.

that was as bad as the clowns that think that killzone copied jetpacks from Halo Reach when they were in Killzone liberation, that happened to be out way before Reach was a twinkle in Bungie's eye.

Mmmkay5622d ago

how do you know what ps3 fanboys know? go fucking troll somewhere else!

and btw. uncharted is an adventure game, as in "can adventure games make a comeback" in the title...

point and click however is something completely different.
