Are handheld games overpriced?

It is obvious that the handheld market is big with Nintendo launching its 3DS in a few months time and Sony confirming their next PSP to be launched at the end of the year...

Theyre not overpriced. People are just use to paying 90 cents for a useless game that lasts 5 minutes.

One wrong doesnt make the other right .

Overall yeah handheld games are a bit expensive ... and it shows for games that are exactly like their home consoles counterparts ... only inferior with being mobile as the only advantage (like the yearly pes .. fifa , madden , nfs)

Yep, I know everyone's anti piracy here but I do actually just play my handheld games illegally.

And no am not doing any damage to the developers pockets because if I didn't pirate them I wouldn't pay for them at all regardless.

Reason is simple, DS games aren't like console games there's the odd one that's possibly worth the 30 pound price tag. But most of them are worse then the games I get on my Iphone 4 for 99 pence. And not about to pay 30x that for something inferior to what I get for 30x less.

That being said, the 3DS and NGP are really looking to give me a semi console level experience, more so the NGP. So if I feel am getting my moneys worth when I buy NGP and 3DS games I will be happy to pay for them.

I buy all my console games because I know I get my moneys worth, but I don't buy my DS games because I know there for the most part completely overpriced.

Crisis Core alone pretty much destroys every single DS game out there for my taste!

DNAbro5593d ago

Crisis Core is great but, THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU IS THE BEST GAME EVER!

Vherostar5593d ago

I agree it depends on the qulity of the game some developers know this and release there games clearly as budget games for a lower market price. Its the crap like cooking mama thats priced at full whack thats rip off city. But people are idiots for paying for it.. Saying that, this is why piracy is rampant on handhelds.. I don't know a single DS owner now who only plays legit games they all have r4/edge/etc cards. DS sells so well as the games are free!!!

ds games? yes. Too bad there is no "classics" or "platinum" kind of labels for this handheld.
psp games? yes, but there are a huge piles of games now available for less than 10$, so it's not such a big deal for the psp.

Masterchef20075593d ago

Whether a game is worth the price or not depends on what the game contains. If you pay 40€ for a handheld game that only offers a couple of hours of gameplay then its a rip. But if it offers 8-10 hours of gameplay then it is worth it. Many handheld games try and justify their price by including a multitude of minigames.

You have 50 years of gaming to draw from if you're on a budget you can play 30 of those at no cost on the same device you're reading this on

ikr?
Emulators exist for a reason.

VenomUK137d ago

Leave aside the issue of brand new games, if you can afford an Xbox or PlayStation you can get the accompanying subscription service. SO MANY GAMES! Before PS Plus with games included launched if you wanted a 'new' game you had to buy it, either new or by going the second hand shop (in the UK this was GAME or CEX). It was a one-at-a-time experience and it cost money. Now people are spoilt for choice. There's not enough lifetimes for you to play even the best games included with these subscription services!

wait for sales
buy things 2nd hand.

its rly not that complicated.
pc has piracy and emulation of retro games.
then theres jailbreaking etc etc.

the more accurate question should be "how do u do it legally".

Profchaos136d ago

Tbh you don't even need a PC to emulate I can comfortably emulate up to PS1 and N64 just on my TVs native OS I actually played mother 3 like this recently with a SNES NSO pad

Never buy a game at full retail price, and don't be afraid to check out free-to-play games.

DivineHand125137d ago

If you want to be the biggest budget gamer and have a decent phone for example a Samsung Galaxy s21 or higher class phone, you can do emulation. Samsung Galaxy s23 or higher can even do switch emulation, and some PC emulation.

If you have a modern laptop, you can just about emulate everything.

If you are not comfortable with emulation, then buy a PS5 and play older titles when they go on sale.

0hMyGandhi136d ago

Steam's summer sales, GOG has frequent massive sales, too. Epic gives a free game all the time. Damn, I was going to mention Redbox for modern console titles, but they went out of business like a year ago. But seriously, there are a ton of options for gaming on a budget. The golden rule is: never buy a game at full price. You really, really don't have anymore if you are just a little patient.
