Why Mass Effect 2 on PS3 is the better version

One of the best games of 2010 finally hits the PlayStation 3. What makes this version so special?

Because it came out later, meaning that they had the time to improve upon it? Lol. (Not to mention Blu-ray for all the extra content.)

(Although, due to some lazy devs, this isn't always the case, but this is Bioware we're talkin about.)

gamer20105587d ago

It might be the better package for some people, but it isn't technically better.

Between the consoles, the gap narrows. Technologically it still feels like the Xbox 360 version has the edge, but occasionally lower frame-rates and mostly unnoticeable graphical compromises on PS3 are not going to have much impact on the fun you have playing this game.

Syaz15587d ago

i would say it's better in the sense that it has more value per buck. technically is quite debatable. i do hope that bioware would release some kind of redeem code for all dlc in one.

ct035587d ago

More value per buck? How so? Even if you buy all the DLC (which I have no interest in), the other versions are still cheaper.

Syaz15587d ago

it does include 3 major dlc released for me2 plus the main game for a normal price you pay for a game.

Interesting read.

In my own opinion, I prefer the Xbox 360 version, basically because of Mass Effect. Bioware being the quality developer that they are, made an ingenious edition to Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 with the interactive comic, and Im sure its great, but I would still prefer Mass Effect 1; its a great game. You can definitely enjoy Mass Effect 2 even if you didnt play Mass Effect 1 first.

In regards to the DLC, they even out really. You can get Mass Effect 2 on Xbox for a fraction of the price of the PS3 version, and buy DLC if you want to and it'll equate to about how much the PS3 version is.

Either way, Im glad PS3 owners can enjoy this amazing game finally.

[When I say Xbox 360 version, I mean PC as well]

George Sears5587d ago

Yeah I guess that's one of the cons of these ports. They tend to be more costly than when it first came out. I do understand that R&D is too blame but hopefully the prices will go down.

Would like to get it but as of now I have more important things to spend on. (Like the gym hurrah!)

smoothdude5587d ago

I don't own an Xbox 360 so I would have missed out on the first Mass Effect, but I decided to create a steam account upon seeing the christmas special of Mass Effect 1 and 2 for $15.

The games are awesome, and I am glad that everyone can now choose for themselves what version they like best!@

The DLC is certainly best enjoyed the way PS3 gamers will enjoy it- already integrated into the game so its just expands the experience from the start. Sometimes i feel tacking on DLC to play after you finish the story or most of the way through is worthless to me, its far better just filling out the main game as you go along.

However the DLC for Mass effect 2 has never worried me too much. The game by itself is just fantastic enough. Which is why i would plump for the PC version everytime. Better graphics do serve well here, you are sucked into this universe so much more readily when the game is crisp and jaggie free, when the framerates are sky high all the animation feels so smooth, the facial animation is slickest. Nothing visually jarrs you loose from the suspension of disbelief.

Plus i enjoy the control setup. The mouse feels extremely natural, the interface blatantly suited to a keyboard and pointer. Being able to spin the camera, turn and aim at the speed of light instantly makes you fall in love with this game.

You guys can admit though that ME2 has better combat that ME1 right? I tried to play on the PC and it just seems clumbsy. ME2 is intuitive in its controls for both console and PC. Setting up your squad is A BREEZE now. Everything that I wanted to do in the first game I can do without any problems. Plus the classes have been revamped and are genuinely different. Love the Vanguard and Sentinel in ME2. Yes get ME1 for the story it is great. The combat is not so great in hindsight. So beware if you haven't played the original. That is the only negative to that game though I miss the complete Citadel with Coras den and all that. Not that it matters at all because of Illium and Omega but with all that disc space they could have included it in the PS3 game just to expore and see if their are fish near the Presidium.

CrazyJ5587d ago

I think the controls for ME1 were superior on the PC vs the 360 at least as far as driving the Mako goes. I bought the 360 version first and actually stopped playing because the Mako driving was so bad. Actually I think aside from getting use to aiming (by pressing a button) on the mouse the PC controls were superior for ME2 also. Although I never played the console version I did enjoy being able to hot key all your powers. Scanning planets was also way faster.

Awesome, totally buying the PS3 version. Coming with all the DLC sealed the deal.

Quagmire5587d ago (Edited 5587d ago )

Its quite sad, really. There' almost no point in buying games day 1 anymore, when given in 6 months to a year, the game will be bundled with all its paid DLC in a cheaper package, titled GOTY/Ultimate/Enahnced/Complet e Edition .

Would_You_Kindly5587d ago (Edited 5587d ago )

It can definitely be annoying, though in fairness, 6 months is quite a wait; often I'd be too impatient to wait that long depending on the generally small amount of money that would be saved in doing so. I don't own a 360 or gaming rig powerful enough to play ME2, so I had to wait for the port. Got it now, and I've already beaten the game once, and am still loving it to death on my second play through. ^_^

At least now-a-days with games, people are often given the option to purchase new content and upgrades that come out later, even if they bought the original game at release and it does still kinda suck to have to pay that extra money. What I hate is the blatant double dipping bullshit that happens, most notably in the movie industry. Here's the blu-ray release of your favorite new film you've been waiting months to see again! But by the holiday season, you can bet we'll have a 'special edition!' of the same movie released with all new footage and awesome extras (many of which most likely could have already been included in the original release!), and an exorbitant new price tag! Because you know, if you want that cool new shit, you're going to have to pay for all of the other stuff you already have again, too! xP Blah.

Edit - And I know there's always renting... but still. xD

BryanBegins5587d ago

I think it depends if the game has an online component. If the game does, buying it day 1 is still worth it cause you'll find more people online, not get destroyed by people who played the game for 1 year, etc.

But for games like Mass Effect, I can definitely wait 6 months to 1 year. Hey, I did that for both games. Result? I got them both for $20 (each) one year after the release.

On-topic: I would call the ps3 the superior version if it was a little bit cheaper. But as of now, you can get Mass Effect 2 + DLC on Xbox360 for actually less than the full retail price of the ps3 version. That, and the fact that you would be missing Mass Effect 1 (an inferior game but still) make me think that the Xbox 360 is still the way to go if you own both consoles.

femshep5587d ago

no played both side by side 360's was better but at least they can work out kinks for ME3 for all to enjoy =D

gamer20105587d ago

You are completely correct. I don't know why you are getting disagrees. I've played both too and the 360 version runs just a little bit smoother and has a little more consistency in its textures. A great game either way.

MGRogue20175587d ago (Edited 5587d ago )

Yeah... But ps3 version has alot more jaggies than 360 version though.. Especially on the character creation screen, you can see 'em around shepherd's head, really bad =/

I noticed it on the demo .. I think it'll probably be the same in full game.

Why bioware didn't use MLAA...? they used crappy quincunx AA instead.. blurs out textures, not good.

anast530d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine530d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast530d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman530d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast529d ago

2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan778d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave777d ago (Edited 777d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
