I"m stoked. Awesome to see Guerilla reach such heights of optimization. They truly are professionals.

The Meerkat5504d ago

Yeah, but does it do Parallax Scrolling?

^^ No it doesn't. ;)

Dude, you too? I thought I was the only one.

Shepherd 2145503d ago (Edited 5503d ago )

The title of this article is misleading and people are reading this wrong.

Killzone 3 doesnt have 3x more polygons used in the models, environments, etc. Everyone is thinking about it in the context of "Helghast soldier used to be made of 20,000, now he is made 60,000 polygons", but this isnt the case.

The studio means that they are generating more polygons at once(probably from the increase in draw-distance), meaning the game will probably have alot more going on at once.

Im sure KZ3 improved its raw graphics over KZ2, but not 3x like everyone thinks that this article is implying.

IcarusOne5503d ago

I won't be impressed until it balances my checkbook.

Sevir045504d ago

and people say KZ2's graphics couldnt be topped. to have 3x more polygons than the beast KZ2 is is a feat in itself.

with refinement an better optimizations UC3 will be just as big a jump as UC2 was over UC:DF

PS3 exclusives simply cant be challenged

zootang5504d ago

I think people like to keep themselves relevant so they discard facts. Which (discarding facts) leads them to still be relevant in their own circles.

Roozium5504d ago

If we're talking about console games only, then maybe.

If we're talking about every platform available right now, PS3 exclusives has been outdone three years ago.

jack_burt0n5504d ago

@Roozium

You give fanboys a bad name, you wish there was any developer refining an engine on PC as guerilla does on the ps3.

Crytek have spent the last 3 years getting crysis working on 360 lol.

I love pc gaming but give credit where its due.

LightofDarkness5504d ago

@Burton

They can't, and PC Gamers know that. They can try to optimize for popular hardware and optimize for Nvidia and ATI pipelines, but there's such a variety of hardware out there that it's impossible to pick one, optimize exclusively for that and risk excluding a large market.

But why are people disagreeing with Roozium? He's not wrong, Crysis does look better than anything else, and it was released nearly 4 years ago. People tend to forget that around here and it gets pretty annoying when the fanboys all remove their hearing aids and glasses and so they can enjoy pretend-time without distractions.

Sevir045504d ago

I'm talking about console gaming! Crysis on pc is beast and nothing trumps it. but again. i dont bring pc in a console topic because that isnt relevant to me. i dont game on a pc i game on consoles. and the facts state ps3 exclusive cant be challenged. And you are right the ps3 has been surpassed in tech 3 years ago, but 3 years later, the ps3 is still managing to put out games that Can theoretically challenge some of the best the pc has to offer with things only hi end pcs are capable of doing. deffered rendering, MLAA and to some extent CSAA. not bad for processor released 3 years ago with limited ram!

IcarusOne5504d ago

"and people say KZ2's graphics couldnt be topped"

I'm pretty sure the only people saying this were Sony fanboys... Most of us know that everything gets topped eventually.

Doletskaya5504d ago

So what does amount of polygons say about KZ3's gameplay? Absolutely nothing. Seriously, WTF is with this generation's gamers and their obsessions with these numbers about graphics?

A game can have like billions of billions of polygons, and I still wouldn't give a sh!t about it unless it has innovative and fun gameplay.

conswella5503d ago (Edited 5503d ago )

"- Killzone 3 has a draw distance three times greater than Killzone 2
- It also generates three times the polygons of its predecessor"

The title of this misleading article lead me to believe there would be 3x amount of polygons in character, prop, and environment models.

Fallout 3 and similar games let you adjust the draw distance. In doing so, it increases the polygons being rendered in the distance. WooHoo.

But God of War 3 is still a contender.

Look at this off-screen image taken with a digital camera.

The picture has been stretched/zoomed more than 3x yet the detail level holds up.

clrlite5504d ago (Edited 5504d ago )

God of War 3 is stunning and it looks even better on a good TV. I had been playing with RGB set to limited and it was still amazing. Now RGB Full is on and it's even more beautiful.
Stig said they were just learning how to do stuff on the PS3 when it was shipped.

From the vids I've seen so far KZ3 looks just as impressive and like a lot of fun. I will wait until I see the game in action on my TV before I compare it to GOW3.

DoomeDx5504d ago

Well, ive been in the killzone 3 beta(still play botzone every now and then), and its quite hard to find a low-reso texture..

KZ2 was full of them, KZ3 has NONE of them

5503d ago
LORD-PHOENIX5503d ago

nicolas

you sir get bubbles

WHY DO SOO MANY OF US FORGET THAT GOW3 IS THE BEST LOOKING PS3 GAME RIGHT NOW?

Shane Kim5503d ago

Gotta agree. GoW3 was simply beautiful.

Kleptic5503d ago

Wesley...

according to the tech videos on GT; Killzone 2 streamed in uncompressed texture data from the BD...but the system could be iffy for certain types of textures...mostly because of the use of quincunx AA in killzone 2...

so for example...the game had nearly untouchable ground texture detail...and many players didn't realize it until you actually stared at the ground for a while for whatever reason...but some wall textures or things wrapped around geometry could be pretty blurry...

GG claims killzone 3 removed that...the implementation of the newer MLAA process for the Cell allows the discrepancy to be much less overall...and further development of the texture streaming tech, with more procedural texturing as well...those 3 things are probably the biggest area of improvement for killzone 3 visually...

I haven't seen enough of killzone 3 in motion to know what kind of difference it makes (that was on purpose, still waiting for the 22nd)...as the game still appears to have a motion blur system still in place...but from screen captures, it does appear notably clearer...

krouse935503d ago

I did the math and I think this means that Guerrilla Games could theoretically take the Killzone 2 game and run it at 1920 by 1080p in the Killzone 3 engine!

suckerpunch5503d ago

everyone kinda expect KZ 3 to look slightly better than KZ 2......but wow !...GG just outdone themselves by a huge margin, bravo bravo GG.

3X polygons.....simply sweet !

conswella5503d ago

i would like to point out that

"- Killzone 3 has a draw distance three times greater than Killzone 2
- It also generates three times the polygons of its predecessor"

Guess where the extra polygons are going?

SuperM5503d ago

When an object gets further away from the screen the engine will render less polygons. 3x the drawdistance does not equal 3x more polygons. I see thats the point you are trying to make but you are wrong.

LiquifiedArt5503d ago

I have a crysis and beat it multiple times on maxed out settings 1920x1200 and i can tell you that Crysis does not look as good as some of your people are saying.

The one thing that crysis lacks is Animation. Which is what every high-end ps3 exclusive has and excels in spades against ANY competition. There is nothing else comparable.

That is part of the visual "realism" of the environment. Crysis does look "life-life" because that is their art direction, but Killzone 2 was right up there in visual appeal.

I judge it on how my eyes feel when I play them and KZ2, grahpically, was very very good.

nycredude5503d ago

Yeah I totally agree with you. These pc fanboys are freaking delusional about Crysis. I play it on my laptop maxed out and while it looks great it is seriously not as good as everyone makes it out to be. if you look for them there are low res textures and try outputting it on a big screen tv it gets even less impressive.

Kleptic5503d ago

never bring that up in here....

discussions on a games visual prowess HAS to be about max resolution, max AA, and how great the screen grab looks...

discussions that go into finer details about motion capture, animation, how dynamic and realistic the lighting is, and the overall visual impact the game creates...you know...while in motion...are quickly ignored...

Don't even think about discussing AI or any subtle details like that...that is even worse, and is immediately dismissed...

Crysis was, and for the rest of this generation will be, the best screen shot creator available...the fact that when you see it in motion, and what happens when you watch enemies running around...or how dated the lighting is (the night/day cycles are great, but the sourcing is spotty when its not the sun...indoor sections for example)...or how quickly 5 random enemies will pin you down from a mile away because you stepped on a stick...and its clearly been outdone...

again...don't talk about that stuff...if they don't see where other titles have outclassed crysis in visual areas other than static grabs...they never will...

Joni-Ice5503d ago (Edited 5503d ago )

True story......I sold my car for his game. Ive been unemployed for a while now and money is low. So I sold my car. It sat for two years because it needed repair so since money was low and I missed a few games already because of it my car had to go. I got the $129.00 Helghast edition and a bus pass.

xstation795503d ago

You sold your car for this game? I'm sorry to hear that you are having money problems. I hope killzone is everything you want it to be and more.

Other reasons too but you get the point.

Not hard to believe with the quality of graphics in the recent trailers.

Best looking game on PS3? (until Uncharted 3 comes out?)

trounbyfire5504d ago

I thought KZ2 looked better than UC2
Uc2 was colorful and very pretty art style but graphics wise KZ2 was way better. I still see that damn bottle at the beginning of UC2 it has zero textures and blocky I just stare at it

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5504d ago

Yea UC2 has some nice visuals but KZ2 just barely trumps it.

fishd5504d ago

With all due respect...

Kratos shat on all of them from top of the Mount Olympus!

HeavenlySnipes5504d ago

You people are forgetting that the best looking game on the PS3 is GOW3

karl5504d ago

it truly is.... dont know why soo many miss that.

GOW3 was the best looking ps3 game..

i think K3 is going to surpass that.."overall"
but gow3 will keep the prize as best character models to me

DaTruth5504d ago (Edited 5504d ago )

Popped in GOW3 3 weeks ago after a few months having not played it and I was blown away all over again! It was like seeing it again for the first time!

After a GOW3 playthrough, I popped in UC2; wasn't that blown away!

GOW3 graphics are just insane and the MLAA is brilliant! I also feel KZ2 is a better game graphically than Uncharted 2! But KZ2 graphics is more on a technical level, while UC2 is just a better looking game!

Sevir045504d ago

Thats all arguable, that fact is PS3 games set the console benchmarks and are ONLY challenged and rivaled by other PS3 centric engines!

specialguest5504d ago

I thought UC2 was prettier to the eyes, but KZ2 with it's atmospheric effects and lighting on a techincal standpoint, was more impressive.

Holeran5504d ago

Seen them all and after playing KZ3 beta I can honestly say that it beats all the exclusives so far in my opinion. Looking at the Resistance 3 game play video today I can also say that my jaw dropped a little after having played both of the other Resistance games , I think they are trying to actually put pressure on the other exclusive developers now.

turgore5504d ago

god of war 3 looked really good but the artstyle is so last gen... it looked very similar to god of war 2 from the HD collection.

suckerpunch5503d ago

wait and see.....so far uncharted art direction is still same old shit. Killzone has a very unique gritty visual style, uncharted is very indiana jonesish.

Also....resistance art style is getting more and more boring.....it seemed like insomiac loves orange so much.

skyward5504d ago

3 times? Makes you wonder what they were doing on Killzone 2... always found the field of vision on KZ2 too narrow. Hope they've sorted that rather than adding bells and whistles

suckerpunch5503d ago

there's limitations.....if not in hardware then in talents, fundings and TIME ! GG now is a more mature and experienced ps3 developer than they were during KZ 2 development, considering it is pain in the ass to program for ps3 especially for 1st time developer. KZ 2 is the best looking console game whe it's released

trounbyfire5504d ago

OH boy i wonder what Ps3 exclusive will look like in a few years. KZ3 has the best graphics period not even UC3 will top it

see other comment to know why

RevXM5503d ago

In a few years there will be Ps4.
But ps3 games wont get uglier obviously.

Killzone 3 looks like porn and we didnt really need this jargon statement to realize that.
Though I love tech jargon, so bring some more. :>

3rd Horizon Is Expected To Be A Long Ways Off, Majority Of Guerrilla Is Working On Hunters Gathering

The third mainline Horizon is expected to be a long ways off, as a majority of Guerrilla Games is working on Hunters Gathering.

twistedvoxel.com
-Foxtrot19d ago

What a waste of their time, it would be a lot different if it was a small team of theirs helping an external studio or something but to have this be one of the teams main games is just overall sad to hear.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we need Horizon 3 right now as I don't think there's much they could really do to make it stand out from Horizon II but I wanted to see a new IP from them to give the Horizon franchise some breathing space so when we did get Horizon 3 it would feel more fresh. Horizon II was a good game but you could tell when playing that it was just a sequel which felt like the main appeal was just being a more super refined version with a lot of quality of life improvements compared to the first game, even then it felt it was struggling at times to really stand out, maybe it was because it was a PS4/PS5 cross play title and didn't get to take advantage of the PS5 new tech who knows.

If this game flops, it's just going to give people more of an excuse online to hate on the franchise even more and might end up hurting the anticipation for Horizon 3. They were better off doing a new IP or a reboot of Killzone

JEECE18d ago

Exactly. Sony seems to be getting things exactly wrong with Horizon. It's the type of IP that needs to disappear for a few years and then come back with a third game that really feels like an evolution from 2, rather than just an iterative sequel, like 2 was from 1. It isn't the type of franchise that is going to support a ton of spinoffs.

Sircolby4518d ago (Edited 18d ago )

After watching that trailer...the chances of it flopping are pretty high. That trailer did not look good. Disappointing because I actually enjoy the Horizon series, but Hunters Gathering looks like it will miss the mark.

Eonjay17d ago

For the love of God... don't believe this. This whole story is engagement farming and is based on a one word tweet without context. The obsession with every whim of Jason Scherer is stupid.

Profchaos17d ago

The way Sony is trying to Disneyfy horizon is already hurting any interest I have in the franchise

I'm just hired of the whole thing now honestly it feels oversaturated even though we only have two mainline games

We have two live service games, a VR game a movie coming and remasters of the first game

I'm over it

Honestly, I can't say I mind this. Forbidden West was a good game but it didn't exactly leave me desperate for it's successor.

neutralgamer199218d ago

Horizon 3 will most likely be a launch window title for PS6

isarai_lee18d ago

Well I loved the first game, and while i acknowledge how much of a step up the second game, was it's insane! I absolutely did not like the second game from a gameplay standpoint. It seemed woefully unbalanced and a shocking amount of glitches that I'm surprised review sites did not report on.

But this series is a rare case of "just because it sells gangbusters, doesn't mean it's popular" like yes the mainline series sells a ton, but you wouldn't know looking at how it has failed to enter pop culture like God of War has. So trying to sell things by throwing it's name around just isn't going to work, the flop that was the lego game was proof enough of that, and this may be exhibit B for the same case.

I hope im wrong, i mean who doesn't want more fun games, but i just don't see it, and i hope their next game is a new IP cause otherwise it's gotta be so good it cleanses my pallet of the bad taste forbidden west left in my mouth

MayorPauline18d ago

Indeed. I glitched in between obstructions on more than one occasion. I also remember gliding for an extended period of time and the game abruptly blacked out for a few seconds. I thought it crashed but it came back on. That was on the PS4 version of the game.

isarai_lee17d ago

More than a few occasions i was getting trapped inside geometry and would have to fast travel or die to eacape, also had like 4 campfires i could not use because it would spawn me in the ground. Also has an issue where the longer my play session the worse the framerate would get till it was no bs like 3fps and i would have to restart the application which kinda sucks when you're in the middle of a loooong fight mid mission. I actually stopped playing for a few weeks until that specific problem got patched. This was all on the ps5 version for me

raWfodog17d ago

I had an excellent experience with Forbidden West because I didn’t play it until the complete edition released a year and half after the original release date. I’ve learned a long time that it’s best to wait until these big games are patched up because they almost always have bugs and glitches when they first release.

DivineHand12517d ago

I am confused. What was wrong with the Horizon 2 gameplay?

The focus of the game was to use the appropriate weapons to detatch craftable parts before killing the machine. This added a lot of challenge to the fights. They also revamped the melee system to allow alloy to do combos and special abilities were added that applied buffs.

Can you provide examples?

isarai_lee17d ago

Maybe they rebalanced it after the fact but playing through it at launch and the few months that followed, if you werent using corrosion/acid in the late game, you were getting your a$$ handed to you ESPECIALLY with the final boss fight. Literally had to load a previous save because i didn't have any major corrosion weapons for the final fight, and it wasn't an isolated incident as lots of people were online having the same experience. Also ran into more than a few enemies that just seemed to have crazy overpowered attacks for literally every situation like the Babboons and the shellsnappers, ESPECIALLY the shellsnappers that just spam the leap attack then burrow into the ground constantly giving little to no opportunity to target weak points.

The mellee ststem was fine except a few melee pit challenges, those got real stupid near the end getting one shot before i could even move after the timer.

-Foxtrot17d ago

I think the best way of looking at it is Sony seems to want to force the success as quick as possible rather than letting it happen naturally over a longer period of time.

God of War has been nurtured for a long time and even when the series started to get stale and over done (there was far too many games coming out) they paused long enough to softboot it with the 2018 God of War that lifted it straight back to the top.

Horizon hasn't been on that journey and even if you compare it to Killzone, a franchise where even by the release of Shadow Fall started to feel a little stale, has had more content (not just games) thrown out in 9 years since the first release compared to what Killzone had in the same period, Shadow Fall being the last game released in its 9th year.

JEECE16d ago

It's weird to think about, but the gap between God of War: Ascension and the 2018 Reboot was basically the same as the gap between the first two Horizon games (five years). I guess the fact that most people (including me) stopped at GOW 3 made it seem longer.

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Yeah there's a weird phenomenon where sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place not because they are amazing and phenomenal successes in every aspect sometimes something needs to be just good enough

Horizon to me feels like the franchise especially 2that's just good enough in most regards Nd it came early in the ps5s life but you don't see a cult following like you do mass effect or the last of us most people are like ok cool that was fun enough and leave it at that

I actually think we will see a massive drop off for 3 because people will feel like it's crossed the bridge to being to much

JEECE16d ago

"sometimes things sell because they are in the right time and place"

In a way it feels like that is true for Horizon (particularly the second one), but the series is also notorious for launching near major competition. The first one launched right before BOTW (different platform, but it still resulted in a ton of comparisons), and the second one launched at almost the same time as Elden Ring.

PlayStation Studios Could Embrace Decima Engine As Guerrilla Expands Developer Support

Some of Sony's first-party PlayStation Studios may be developing their future titles using Guerrilla Games' Decima engine.

twistedvoxel.com
RaidenBlack410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

Might be for studios which were using older engines or UE4 like Bend Studio.
Sony's big 5 studios' engines are all unique to some degree and I want it stay that way for future new games.
Remakes can be done using Decima if required like Bloodborne or Uncharted 1.
Imagine From Software embracing Decima for future titles.
But then again Until Dawn Remake was done using UE5, when the original was made using Decima.

VersusDMC410d ago

Maybe ease of use is what made it a better choice. And it was already tested by a another studio with kojima productions having shipped death stranding on Decima.

Eonjay409d ago

I wonder if this is for studios beyond SIE and KP. Decima has also proven itself of platforms beyond PS5 so I wonder how comfortable they would be with allowing non first party use it wherever?

Minute Man 721410d ago

They should use the Ready at Dawn engine

DarXyde410d ago

That engine is mighty impressive, even by today's standards. The cloth simulation and gun animations are absolutely chef's kiss.

But I think it's one of those very intensive engines that will choke the hell out of the hardware and you're looking at a short and linear but very detailed experience. More or less what you get from a UE5 game that really forces the hardware (e.g., Hell blade II).

For that reason, Naughty Dog's engine is probably more practical: still extremely detailed (albeit less so) but allows for a more wide-linear experience and you're still left in awe.

But if we're going open world, absolutely Decima.

porkChop409d ago

They don't own that engine, and Ready at Dawn doesn't even exist anymore.

anast410d ago

They already have embraced it along with some other engines.

jjb1981410d ago

I'm a huge Killzone 2 fan. It's my favorite shooter of all time and I wish they'd revive the IP. I know a remake of KZ2 would do very well. My original PSN friends I met were on KZ2 and and we formed a clan. I've been itching to get that 3 star badge. Only made it to 2-star.

Eonjay409d ago

Fun fact Decima IS the evolved version of the Killzone engine.

OlderGamer17409d ago

Noppe, its build from the ground up....

CrimsonIdol409d ago

A Killzone 2 remake where the controls are actually responsive could be cool.

mike32UK409d ago

The character has weight, it was a design choice which many people happened to like. You're probably too used to the floaty controls of COD

CrimsonIdol408d ago (Edited 408d ago )

yeah I remember that argument too. Then how that argument went away when they fixed it for the sequel. having massive input delay before anything happens due to technical issues isn't an artistic choice. It's good copium though

RaiderNation409d ago

Rather than a KZ2 remake, I'd rather see them do a KZ reboot! If they're going to do a remake, I'd rather see a PS5 remake of KZ Mercenary! Hands down one of the best Vita games and the 2nd best Killzone game in the series (after KZ2).
