It’s hard to ignore the sales battle between Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which are neck-and-neck in retail performance despite the gap in hardware performance. While debating the merits of each platform is all in good fun, developers are sweating over the rising cost of game development, and are even scared about the next round of consoles. Yet a brand new handheld from Sony has the capability to help both PS3 and Xbox 360 developers.
Former Xbox executive Ed Fries comments on the early days of Xbox, the opinion of Japanese game companies, and more.
I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.
There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.
I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.
I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.
Sony uploaded gameplay footage of Crimson Desert on a base PS5 running in what appears to be Quality Mode at a stable 30fps at 4K.

Sony announced its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, alongside the traditional update on PS5 shipments.
Sony and Nintendo are both thriving and I'm happy, thank goodness for them or otherwise the whole gaming industry would be in shambles if they only had PC to rely on!
• Total G&NS revenue: 10.5 billion USD
• Operating profit: 900 million USD
• Hardware sales: 8M units shipped
• Software sales: 97M units
• PSN MAU: 132M
vs. Xbox:
• Total gaming revenue: 5.96 billion USD
• nothing else gets reported
It would be in Sony's beat interest to not rush next generation. Let 2029 or 2030 be the start of next generation. There is clearly plenty of demand for the PS5 and gamers are not asking for more at this time.
I think Switch 2 beat PS5 during December 2025 that is why the gap decrease to 1m units. Because during black friday, I know PS5 sales is 2:1 against the Switch 2.
And I just want to add that the PlayStation 5 is currently 1.94 million units BEHIND the PlayStation 4 when you align launches. While Switch 2 is 10M ahead against the Switch 1 when you aligned covering it's first 7 months.
Being able to stop demon souls and play that epic boss battle on the toilet ...or laying in bed is priceless...I think this is where this device is heading and the r2 l2 in most games is just a grenade trow or something that could be done with square.....I hope this is the future ....as for the 360 thing..thatssssssssss not a gd idea ...this is a business at the end of the day...if you wanna enjoy these features you'll have to buy a ps3....nothing personal just business
why would sony want to help MS out?
40million dollars!? This needs to change cuz I'm definately not pay 70 bucks for games next gen.
My..My.., look who's approaching now.., just mind your own WP7 will ya..!
so according to Hideo Kojima, then next PS3 games will be released with an edition which is for both system (PS3 & NGP) with extra price, that's NOOICE..!!
" which are neck-and-neck in retail performance despite the gap in hardware performance"
The gap in retail performance is small, but the gap in hardware performance is even smaller.
I.e. I can see the difference in retail sales without the need for 20 comparison sites and a micro-scope.
