Paramount preps for possible Spielberg exit

Paramount Pictures is preparing for the possibility that director Steven Spielberg could leave the studio when his contract expires next year, calling the impact "immaterial," a top executive said on Tuesday.

In recent months, media reports have speculated that Oscar winner Spielberg, whose movies range from "Jaws" to the more recent "War of the Worlds," has been unhappy at Paramount after the company bought the DreamWorks movie studio that he co-founded in 1994 with David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

A departure is seen as hurting Paramount, whose recent blockbusters "Transformers" and "Blades of Glory" stemmed from DreamWorks. "Transformers," which Spielberg produced, has generated nearly $700 million at global box offices.

Wow this would be a big loss for Paramount. Spielberg has made some of the best movies out there. I wonder what studio He would go to next or does He want to retire and just be with his Family. As of right now His next big movie will be Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. So Spielberg will have to be on to finish that project.

Another thing I wonder about if it could be the HD/Blu Ray issue. Spielberg has said in the past He wants people to be able to watch the movie they want on the format they want. So seeing as Paramount is now exclusive to HD-DVD I wonder if it has any thing to do with this.

If this all turns out to be true I wish Spielberg the best of luck in His new venture

His last movie, Munich, is Universal.

what was the last great movie of spielberg ?; "War of the World" was crap, and it was in 2005. "Munich" was a disaster. Maybe Paramount wants him out imagine the amount of money that he is getting per year from paramount and for what. In transformers he was not really involve

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
