10 Most Overhyped PS3 Titles

For the current generation of consoles, the major companies involved have taken the hype machine to the next level. Sony has done it’s share of work; from showing CGI movies and implying it was real in game footage to showing titles that never made it to the shelf, they left no stone unturned in their quest for the console throne. Here is our list of the 10 most overhyped titles in the PS3 line up.

Not getting why multiplatform titles are being considered. Especially ME2 since most of the hype comes from it coming to the PS3.

@Below:
kind of get Motorstorm because it suffered from KZ2 graphics hype from trailer to game and failed to deliver.

Seijoru5596d ago

I also don't understand Motorstorm being up there. I just remember all the flak Sony was getting back in late/early 2006/2007. MAG is another game that wasn't really overhyped and delivered a stable tactical MMO FPS experience.

Anarki5596d ago

Oh shi~ this wont end well....

Pixelated_Army5596d ago

Four out of the ten are multiplats...wtf?

"There are only a handful of tracks in the game and they don’t look good either. Most of the photorealistic screenshots that we see are from the photomode of the game."

Horse shit!

ExplosionSauce5596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

When was Lair or MAG overhyped?
What's wrong with 220 amazing looking cars? And what about the ingame/realtime graphics?

http://i53.tinypic.com/m99i...
http://i54.tinypic.com/epgm... (replay/photo looks the same minus the shadow jaggies)
It looks/plays nothing like GT4.

And what's up with the multiplatform games in the list?

Information Minister5596d ago

Wow... GT5 is already at 7 years of development time?! At this rate, next month it will probably be at 12 years. Time seems to be somewhat distorted in fanboy land.

ExplosionSauce5596d ago

LMAO

Yeah, official GT5 development started in 2007 after the GTHD concept/project was scrapped in 2006.
People need to improve their math skills.

Motorstorm - Not my kind of thing, but they definitely don't seem OVERhyped, if anything just hyped.

Heavenly Sword - A pretty good short game, wasn't overhyped by anyone. If anything, it was underhyped.

Resident Evil 5 - Multiplatform

Final Fantasy XIII - Multiplatform

MAG - Solid shooter, probably deserves more hype.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Multiplatform

Haze - Never saw one good review, when they first announced it maybe it got some hype by being developed by the Timesplitters people.

Lair - Never saw one good review or article after it came out. Again, before it came out, maybe there was some overhyping. But that's just the marketing team.

Mass Effect 2 - Multiplatform

Gran Turismo 5 - Probably overhyped unless you're a die hard GT fan.

Anarki5596d ago

The only games that I think were overhyped was Lair and Haze. Lair had so much potential if it didn't start off only with six-axis support.

has a really big prob.. they fail to identify the real prob.. did any of sony fanboys hype haze?.. .. i still remember like yesterday gaming site were hyping it like there is no tomorrow.. and called it ps3's halo.... by the time it was called a halo killer i knew it gonna be crapped on.. but after playing demo... yeah it deserved to be crapped on.. LOL

peace..

ps: hhhmmmm gamemunition!!! you clearly dont know the difference between multiplat and exclusive..

Philoctetes5596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

Lame article. He's right about RE5 and GTA4 being overhyped, but why that's laid at the PS3's feet is anybody's guess. His comments about ME2 make it pretty obvious that he's still butt-hurt over that game going multiplat.

The only way this could have been even more fanboyish is if he included MGS4 and Uncharted 2, but maybe the author thought that would just make it too obvious.

Parapraxis5596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

"Motorstorm because it suffered from KZ2 graphics hype from trailer to game and failed to deliver."
I see what you did there.
Let me fix that for you.

"Motorstorm because it suffered from KZ2 graphics hype from trailer to game and UNLIKE KZ2, Motorstorm failed to deliver."

Godmars2905596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

Bubble up for correctly correcting me. KZ2's trailer did deliver on the full game's graphics.

littletad5596d ago

Not going to bother listing each reason, but Lair was over hyped through and through. It was touted as the reason to own an HD tv at the time, only possible on ps3 and so on. For proof, check the tag Lair on Kotaku. Even more insulting was that Sony sent "reviewers guide" for the game, when it was critically panned by gamer sites. For reference on that, check up IGN. The picture is hilarious.

But who am I kidding, this site is flame bait, through and through too. But to defend it so adamantly is funny enough. There are a ton of these things for 360 and Wii. Why not ps3?

MWong5596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

Agreed w/multiplatform comment. Why are there multiplatform titles on the list when it says PS3 titles. I think honestly the only overhyped game on that entire list was Final Fantasy 13 and that was a multiplatform release. Only problem is based on the writers definition of overhyped only Lair and Motorstorm should be there.

The rest of the games except for GT5 you hardly heard anything about.

DigitalRaptor5596d ago

Not the best list.

GT5, FFXIII, GTA IV, and perhaps RE5 were overhyped.

blackburn55596d ago (Edited 5596d ago )

More idoiticly written flamebait to stoke the fanboy furnace. Why does anyone approve these things?

JonnyBigBoss5596d ago

"There are plenty of reasons due to which the game just had to make the list. First of all the original Mass Effect is a still a Xbox 360 exclusive so PS3 players will never get to know commander Shepard’s previous escapades."

What? I own both ME1 and ME2 on PC, and ME2 on PS3 as well. Who is this guy to say something like that...

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8526d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele26d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk25d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay25d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10126d ago (Edited 26d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit25d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg25d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10125d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14926d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle39d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit39d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog39d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog39d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad39d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_39d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage39d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda39d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
