Alan Wake Devs Coy on Sequel

Hell Descent: In our interview with Remedy’s Head of Franchise Development, Oskari Häkkinen and Creative Director, Sam Lake of Alan Wake, we asked about the possibility of a sequel. It’s one of those questions that either gets a yes or no answer, but sometimes you get a coy message along the lines of “we can’t say anything yet”. But if there’s nothing to say, why say you can’t say it? Aha! Call us nitpickers, but Oskari Häkkinen response to our sequel question tripped off some alarms.

MS, might as well continue with this series because couple of folks enjoyed the first game.

ksense5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

just like uncharted the second one could make a lot of people go back and play the first and realize what they missed out on. the game was pretty good hopefully ms will do a better job marketing it next time like they did for halo or will do for gears

thereapersson5607d ago

It's really a unique gaming experience, and the fact that it uses the Pacific Northwest as its inspiration earns it bonus points for me.

MAJ0R5607d ago

it would have if they released it on PC

imvix5607d ago

Well advantage with PC these days. Even if a game doesnt sell initially, it just doesnt die out. Platforms like Steam & D2D cause a rejuvination in sales just by giving discounts.

Every time a discount happens thousands of people buy the game, then that causes word of mouth. Making the game start to sell again. This is something that doesnt happen on consoles, if a game bombs then its removed from retail in a few weeks and thats that.

This is exactly how even indie games like:

Torchlight managed to sell near million Copies on the PC.

Amnesia being only 4 months old sold 200,000 copies.

AAA games obviously have a much better chance.

Sleeper hits no one would touch last year like Metro 2033 became hits due to Steam sales promoting it.

Remedy only compromised their own sales by not going PC.

Substance1015607d ago

Wonder why they didnt blame it on the 360 piracy. If the game was a PC exclusive there would have been piracy cries coming from every where lol.

ksense5607d ago

Man I love Steam and I totally agree I pick up so many games during the holidays from them. Recently picked up mafia 2 and all DLC for like 20$ and that game was freaking amazing and had me hooked for a couple of weeks until I completed it

cakeisalie5607d ago

Lol 20usd for the game + all DLC is insane. Think my friend bought that game for 14usd. Still both are great bargains ;-)

If Alan wake would have released on PC, i am sure Steam would have played a big role in making the game a success. Steam just know how to move software.

gillri5607d ago

it wopuld have got more attnetion on the PC

there isnt much release these days for the PC compared to console so it would have had greater exposure on there,

on the 360 and PS3 there were other big AAA titles hitting at that time that were occupying gamers

sinclaircrown5607d ago

@Thereapersson

I agree the setting was awesome for the game. Underrated IMO. Game really creeped me out. Not many games can do that. I like it.

Ranshak5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

@gillri

Theres actually alot on PC, check out www.steampowered.com

More releases then any console. Lets not even count the Xbox since it only has multiplats for this year.

imvix5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

gillri

Most AAA titles are out on all 3 platforms. The PC platform actually offers the version closest to how the developer actually intended the game to be played. If anyone is missing out on 95% of the games released its the console gamers. No ones stopping people from playing the 5% games on console that dont make it to PC.

Games released last year that were worlds apart between console and PC:

Bad company 2
Bioshock 2
Dragon age origins awakening
Fall out vegas
Grand theft auto episodes
Mafia 2
Medal of honor
Metro 2033

Just to name afew.

Alan Wake was awesome and way underrated. I am crossing my fingers for a sequel.

DenyTheFacts5607d ago

One of the best games I've ever played

hennessey865607d ago

alan wake along with uncharted 1 and 2 and heavy rain have been my fav games this gen cod 4 for multiplayer

DenyTheFacts5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

I need to buy a PS3 man.. Uncharted 2 seems awesome

Kran5607d ago

@DenyTheFacts

I now own a PS3. It is awesome :D So many thrilling moments!

TheDivine5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

Me too alan wake is one of my fav games this gen along with demons souls, uncharted, mass effect, lost odyssey and fable 2/3. Too many games to name them all but this is worth getting a 360 for just as uncharted is worth owning a ps3. Should of went to pc also imo.

Acquiescence5607d ago (Edited 5607d ago )

for the (so far) 1.3 million selling Epic Mickey, then how the hell should Remedy ever get the green light for Alan Wake 2.

SlipperyMooseCakes5607d ago

They have Microsoft backing them up. They practically broke even on Crackdown 1 and there was still a sequel.

I hope there is an Alan Wake 2. Alan Wake was my GOTY for 2010.

Kalipekona5607d ago

Me too. I didn't enjoy any other game in 2010 as much as Alan Wake.

hoops5607d ago

Bring it out. Bring it out for the PC also and market the game well.
If they do this, it will be more successful.

Alan Wake 2's Upgraded PSSR Delivers A Vast Improvement

DF: "Alan Wake 2 is one of our games of the generation - a proper technical showcase - but with the arrival of Sony's upgraded PSSR upscaler, it's also a key proving ground for the capabilities of the revised technology. In its 60fps performance mode, the game's complex foliage, dense geometry and demanding lighting are paired with an internal 864p resolution, upscaled to 4K. It's a challenge that the original PSSR couldn't handle, sometimes comparing unfavourably with the original FSR2. However, the upgraded PSSR is a revelation by comparison."

I've already completed this game and everything else there is to do in it sadly, so I have no need to go back and enjoy the added enhancements that the new PSSR brings to this game. But I definitely want to go back and check out Control as I still haven't finished up all the DLC for that yet.

Ashunderfire8674d ago

O definitely do Control is a longer game than Alan Wake 2! Plus there is an Alan Wake tie in with Control, plus you face off against a scary boss! That guy was hard asf man.

Jesse Faden the main character, has so many upgrades to her movesets, and object of power gun. Playing this game now to prepare for Control Resonant.

Cacabunga74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

It’s a terrible and boring game.
No way I will ever go back to it . I really do not like Remedy’s touch

Kornholic74d ago

Sadly? You mean you can't replay a game just for the fun of it?

Neonridr74d ago

I've played through the game numerous times. It was my favorite game of 2023. I have so many other games to play. Could I go back and play it for a few minutes to appreciate some extra clarity in the distance? Sure. Would I rather play a game I haven't finished or played yet and enjoy the PSSR updates brought to those titles instead? Yes.

isarai_lee74d ago

I mean im kinda with Neonridr on this, like when i game is so good you get everything you can out of it, a slightly shaper image is cool but not worth the hassle of install/update etc

andy8575d ago (Edited 75d ago )

It's mad they can take a 864p image and make it close to a 4K image. This tech is gonna do so much for console gaming

fr0sty74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

the crazier part is, sometimes enabling this kind of AI upscaling tech actually produces a BETTER image than natively rendering at 4K (and to be clear, I'm not talking about DLSS5's AI slop that takes creativity away from the game developers).

isarai_lee74d ago

That's just outright not true

andy8574d ago

Dunno why you're getting downvotes there is actually instances of this happening. Stellar Blade being one of them. DF reported the PSSR mode looks better than the native 4K mode. Im assuming its PSSR from 1440p or higher. So imagine with the 2.0 update

__y2jb74d ago

Strange that the other story on the frontpage with AI upscaling involved is receiving a hugely negative response in the comments but a Playstation AI upscaler story...well that's just great!

isarai_lee74d ago

No it's still bad, just not nearly as egregious, but there's definitely a sizeable (and growing) group of gamers who dislike any TAA/DLSS/AI upscale in general, myself included. Every time there's some update to one of these upscaling methods I roll my eyes because only when we improve from the issues can we address the issues, but when talking outside of an improvement or update suddenly there's no issues and we're The crazy ones for criticizing AI upscaling

andy8574d ago

That's because one is changing the art (characters faces) and one is making things look sharper. Isnt because it's PlayStation.

mkis00780d ago

Such a weird post by them. Apparently they just mean the system wide toggle. Which is perfectly fine. This is based off a post they made after this post.

Eonjay80d ago

Not sure what's weird about that. The update being system wide is basically free marketing for any game using the tech. I assume they already have access to the update and are happy with the results.

mkis00779d ago

Its Just the wording, as they didnt have to do any work for it to be supported.

jznrpg80d ago

Why is it weird for a dev to let people know their game runs better now? If they didn’t mention it that would be weird

mkis00779d ago

I just mean they worded it like they did a custom thing...which they could do by tweaking base resolution if the upgraded pssr allows it with no image drawbacks. I'd be down for that.
