Microsoft's Response to PlayStation Move

"On September 17th, Sony released PlayStation Move to the market anticipating an impact that would expand their fanbase and would compete with Microsoft's yet-to-release gaming hardware, Kinect. With both products off to a great start and each company promising continued support of their latest gaming peripheral, Nick feels it is safe to say PlayStation Move and Kinect are here to stay, but for how long? While asking Microsoft this question, Nick received the following statement from one of Microsoft's Spokespersons."

While I do feel Microsoft's Kinect is a great device, it is hard to enjoy many games without the use of buttons.

It was already known Kinect will destroyed move.

But that can't be the same for the exclusive line up for PS3 2011.

MS where is the games? That people care about.

MysticStrummer5595d ago

Kinect outselling Move is like the Wii outselling everything. I still couldn't care less about it.

5595d ago
starcb265595d ago

kinect had a 500 mil advertising campaign.

BISHOP-BRASIL5594d ago

@edonous

So Move is no longer the expensive one? You'll not going to add up Eye, 4 Moves, 2 Navs and a charge station anymore to claim Kinect to be cheaper? LOL you fanboys really stay behind your arguments, don't you...

Kinect has potential but guess what, I still don't care for people dancing in front of their TVs. Call me back when a good game justify the controller.

Kurt Russell5594d ago

Kinects ok - played round my brother house and did have a laugh. Also borrowed the MOVE from a work colleague... that was ok too. Neither one is worth my hard earned pennies though, they revolutionise nothing. Next generation will be consoles selling with controllers just the same as all the others - maybe they'll integrate certain aspects, but other than that these have only been designed to milk the cash cow.

but its something new and i am sure in the coming gens we will see more of it and more power to those who like them as long as there are games that give you the option to choose how you want to play whether a controller or motion controls i will be fine with it

You guys benefited so much from 2nd string QB's and bogus no calls. Im not saying im just saying. Always did like cutler to bad he had to go to the packers enemies team.

I hope for a great game but they arnt getting past the pack

aaronisbla5594d ago

bogus no calls? you mean like the ones that are often missed when Julius Peppers gets held but no flag is thrown? Happened a few times during the Bears/Packers first game, should have been more than 17 flags thrown on you guys that game

BlackTar1875594d ago

How about your OL holding CM3 every play but no flags. Or the helmet to helmet. I know there was some missed across the board but lol if you really believe your OL didnt get away with 10+holds on CM3.

"it is safe to say PlayStation Move and Kinect are here to stay"

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Kinect is definitely here to stay and will be in the next Xbox the same can't be said for Move. Move's sales have dropped sharply after Kinect was released Sony still have yet to make an update on Move shipment numbers which pretty much confirms they are obviously nothing to shout about.

Not to mention there's not a single 3rd party exclusive Move game and only a handful of 1st party Move games while MS continues to get more and more games exclusively for Kinect. I wouldn't surprise me if Sony decided to drop Move by the end of 2011 because it obviously isn't expanding their userbase the way they had hoped.

gta28005595d ago

lol @ Third party exclusives. Why would Sony pay for third party exclusives. I thought we all knew Microsoft is the only one that pays for third party exclusives lol.

Motorola5595d ago

They dont end up being exclusives for long either...

m23455595d ago

Nicaragua5595d ago (Edited 5595d ago )

Dead space 2

wu-stix5595d ago

Your argument is flawless except for the fact that kinect only has 21 games out right now while Move has 41 and of those 41, 18 are 3rd party. Check the links below. So the Move has almost as many 3rd party games out now as the kinect has in total. The fact of the matter is devs are going to support the move and wii while the kinect will get left out in the cold because it is so different from the other 2.

This comment explains why you have one bubble. Yeah Kinect sold more than move, but that doesn't mean move is not selling. Wii sold more than PS3 and 360 together, but that doesn't mean they sold badly. Your trolling is shameful. I don't know why I'm responding to you because you can't reply, seeing that your stealth trolling ass has one bubble.

edhe5594d ago

Plenty of people have less bubbles simple because they say things that the SDF disagree with. And since this site is hoachin' with them then they lose their bubbles.

Bubbles aren't about what a person's opinion is worth, it's about how popular they are with other commentors.

TheFact0035595d ago

What I wanna ask you is, how many of Kinect's games are the same thing with a different title? There's, what 5 Kinect Dance games? 5 Kinect fitness games? 1 game about a pet? it has no diversity at all, those games are bland and tasteless. Move might not have the most critically acclaimed games but it has diverse and unique games, they've used Move in every genre except racing (so far) while kinect cant get past playing with pets and dancing.

rockleex5595d ago

You can use Move in GT5.

This will be interesting to see how sony and ms continue to battle it out. I want to see what interesting games they have comin this year for their motion devices. So far Sony has the upper hand, as far as games are concerned. Only E3 will tell.

BLACKBOIJONES5595d ago (Edited 5595d ago )

Never write off sony!!!!! Remember when the ps3 first came out ever one wrote them off and now 2011 all we can hear is the ps3 has the best exclusives. Im sure they have something planned for move. Only time would tell.

edhe5594d ago

Everyone wrote off the ps3 as being no where near as successful as the ps2.

OH SHIT LOOK WHAT HAPPENED.

Nobody said it'd never have good games.

JayD-1K5594d ago

Actually, when some of the first games came out for the PS3 (exclusives) they were laughed at and ridiculed. and lets not even talk about 3rd party games. which caused some people to question the quality of the software coming to the PS3.
and whats to say that it won't sell better than the PS2? the PS2 numbers came over TIME! about ten years if i'm correct?!

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg18d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay18d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown18d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay18d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger18d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300018d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde18d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde18d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
