I am just hoping this "overdrive" or "raw power usage" which they always talk about materilizes and is not just another bollox PR spin which they be releasing into the market.

360 is in a very strong position in europe and North america and with the releases which are coming on is looking to get stronger and stronger and i am not sure how that can be derailed. Halo3, Cod4, mass effect and PGR4 are all heavy weight titles which have a massive effect on the ahrdware sale and all of them coming in such a short period increases the integrity of the game library by few folds. i dont see this coming from any other platform any time soon.

ALthough there is a very strong line up for the PS3 in 2008, poeple always think that the other consoles are going to sit there IDle and watch, huge sales now equals more developers inversting time into making money from this guaranteed install base rather than trying to create one and then sell. So the 360 will always enjoy all the big titles because of its already dedicated install base and is a hueg cash cow for the industry. attach rates on 360 is higher than any other platform which is something people always forget and dont realise that the dvelopers are in there for money not the love of a console.

It makes sense since Microsoft barely have no games in 0'8 and i don't even know if they planning to support the 360 through out 0'9 since they already losing billion of dollars on it especially on repairs...A lot of devlopers is going to lean towards the PS3 and make games for it ..if microsoft pull the plug on the 360 so early..i bet you that all 360s out there will die someday...cuz their not goin to keep spendin money to fix it..they basically screwed themself..

In 2009 the 360 will still have more games than PS3, many of them will be very cheap in price, plus the console itself will still be cheaper, the only difference is RROD will be ancient history,360 install base will be even bigger, and 360 will have even more features, like IPTV, so, exactly why do they think the PS3 will suddenly steal the market and leave 360 dead? If the Playstation 3 started selling 500k a month, than it would only be one year before it caught up to the Xbox 360 sales as of today. That would mean the Xbox 360 would have to sell nothing for the next year. But the reality is that the Playstation 3 is moves less than 150k units a month. So, it going to be years and years and years before it can even catch todays Xbox 360 sales. As for Wii, we all know it kicking ass and taking names.

Games for PS3 will sell the console and considering theres more exclusives than that console that breaks down alot and well since that console doesnt have exclusives really when alot of them are mostly on PC or PS3 or both.

Sony was lucky enough(smart enough back then)to grab the casual masses with lots of games on a console many snatched up when PS2's price was right.

Its always funny reading Sony fans comments spining things as if all those casual millions are some how loyal to the PlayStation brand. PS2 was and is cheap, has lots of games and was the casual trend(the console to get due to popular opinion).

No one's waiting for the price to come down for the PS3 they're just waiting for consoles to become dirt cheap with hundreds of games, thats it!. Wii has already won that casual trend that PS2 had.

Now Im not saying by 2009 that the 360 wont be in third place and Im not saying it will be but what ever position it is in it will not be a distant from the others by that time. The facts are there is over a 6million user base diff between the 360 and ps3 that means even if the ps3 was to outsell the 360 by 500 thousand untits every month world wide it would take till oct of next year just to catch up. A lot of analysts thought that the ps3 would be neck and neck with the wii, that was wrong. Many thought it would be selling better than the ps2, that was wrong as well. So anything can happen, until then, back to tf2.

The console war is barely started, I find that this number is conservative since a lot of non-gamers, that did not own any last-gen systems, are now picking up the Wii. That being said, the total number of consoles sold right now stands between 25-30 million. That's very little compared to the prospective sales.

Casual gamers are still picking up PS2s (and are buying lots of games for it). I can see the bulk of them adopting the PS3 when they feel that the time and price is right...So 3 years into the PS3 life cycle is 2009, lots of games and a cheaper price tag. Lots of people that bought Wiis at launch may be picking-up their next console around that time when/if they get more seriously into next-gen gaming (graphically speaking).

A lot of it depends on BDs success and I think a 2009 XBox720 is not a viable solution for M$, they don't intend to drop the 360 anytime soon, IMO.

Neither the PS3 or 360 will be dead in 2009. The next Xbox should go on sale come 2009-2010 and the Xbox 360 will still be for sale until I reckon 2012.

Anyone with an *honest scintilla of knowledge and forethought can see that the PS3 will only get better and stronger as time rolls on. It's called a plan, something that was devised with the future in mind, not just the launch period and a *few years down the road.

We can all agree as rational adults, that by 2009 the current 360 and the wii will either have gone through *major upgrades and transformations or replaced altogether.

The current lead the XBOX 360 has over the PS3 means it will 2009 before the PS3 CATCHES the 360. The delta is currently a little over 6 million and will likely increase slightly through year end. It would mean that the PS3 would have to OUTSELL the 360 by at least 500,000 units per month to CATCH the 360. That would be January 2009 at the earliest... That's a ridiculous estimate to make. Whatever the PS3 does pricewise Microsoft will surely act in a timely manner to mitigate the damage and I HIGHLY doubt that a 500K delta will ever be reached (other than the Euro Launch)... Reality sets in when you actually look at the numbers...

Certainly the PS3 with a price cut and their 2008 lineup may close the gap substantially, but to have left the 360 in a "distant" third place? Puhlease...

Sorry but have to disagree with this. I am a happy PS3 owner, but I know even with an amazing year next year the XBox 360 will not be a "distant 3rd" by 2009.

Sony could take over the 360 is sales, but to say that they will put 360 into 3rd? That would mean sales akin to the Wii and whilst I think FF and MGS will sell through the roof, I do not see them shifting the amount of consoles to put the 360 that far behind.

If Sony wins this console race, it will be the first company to have won three generations in a row. Not even the mighty Nintendo pulled that off.

This article is speculation. Even if PS3 wins, it won't have as much market share as the PS2. I say this because the PS3 is selling at too slow of a rate right now, and it has lost many exclusives. If I bought a PS2 for GTA and Resident Evil, and now I can play both of these on a cheaper console with more games and exclusive content for GTA, which one am I going to go with? The 360. Not every PS2 gamer will go to the PS3. Some will jump ship, and I'm guessing that many already have.

I also think that the Wii has hurt both Sony and Microsoft in terms of casual gamers. Make no mistake about it, Sony and Microsoft are battling for the hardcore crowd. Nintendo owns the casual gamers and child gamers right now.

Imagine A quad core processor and 2 Gb or even 4 Gb in ram sweet, by then PS3 will be old stuff with 512 mb in ram, and wii would be crap. Personally I have to change my laptop and desktop about each year because of the improvements in processor asmuch as I work with 3ds Max.

stick to reading the actual articles and commenting on those. the article states how ONE analyst believes the wii will be in first, ps3 second, and xbox360 in third in 2009. i think this is pretty likely to happen in 2009 sometime if the ps3 really does get a $399 sku this holiday season, and then drops again sometime in 2008. it is dumb to think that sales of the ps3 won't pick up when the price drops more, but also remember that the 360 will also have more price drops. how will it affect both consoles by 2009?? who cares??? as long they are still developing games for the console i play, why do i care if one console sells one million, or 100 million more??? i owned an original xbox, which sold like 24 million, and loved it. the ps2 had sold like 120 million, yet i didn't care about the ps2, nor did i want to own one because i liked my xbox, and liked the games that came out for it. same goes with the 360 that i own now...as long as developers continue making great games for it, i really don't care if and when the ps3 passes it, whether it is in 2009 or 2010. ask me again in those years and i will provide the same answer.....who cares lol

I think a more accurate prediction is that in 2009...thats when sales for the ps3 will be respectable....but it will be sooooooo far behind the Wii and the xbox 360....it won't even matter at that point.

The 360 just like the xbox console are both failures on the financial part of things. Microsoft has already spent 1 billion dollars to replace faulting consoles and the number keeps going up. That info was taken from Gameinformer magazine last month. They can't sell the 360 in Japan, and I don't think Microsoft will ever have a market there. The 360 does have more games right now, but they were out a year or more before the ps3, they should have more games out. They have a good lineup right now, but they need to keep it going strong to compete with Sony later on. This battle has just started and is long from over. Sony is hungry right now and is going to do everything to win this console war. They have the better built machine and more power, and probally will eventually win this war. Wii is already outdated, so I won't even mention their console. This is just my opinion. I own both a ps3 and 2 360's, but don't think my 360's will last 3 more years. I hope they do, but the cards are delt against me. 1 had already crapped out in 6 months. They sent me a replacement, but don'

Is it the 360'd fault for these bad games with bad graphics, or is it the developers. why is that? because i believe it will come sooner than that. what are my reasons? i have a lot but let me get this out of my chest first. i know right now ps3 is on close third but that is just because halo 3 have been so hyped that even aliens from another galaxy would buy it. their problem lies when the honeymoon is over and they get to see halo as what it really is. dont get me wrong its a good game but compared to bioshock, unreal tournament 3 and killzone it doesnt deliver what these games can deliver and that is next generation graphics, gameplay and new stuff. sad to say it is just a soup up halo which is more weapons and vehicles and that is it. but i know xbox owners are gonna enjoy it but for me im just gonna play my HS, WARHAWK, TEKKEN ONLINE, GRAW, NINJA GAIDEN, and if that doesnt suffice i still have my WII and now playing metroid prime 3.
another reason would be when ps3's next gen game(haze, ut3, uncharted drakes, eye of judgement, folklore, home, killzone, final fantasy 13, white knight story, god of war 3 gt5 and yakuza 3) comes with the price cut of the ps3 console also then that would seal the deal and its going to be a fight between wii and ps3 by tha middle of next year which i dont mind because i got both systems. im loving it. enjoy and have fun guys. peace out. PS3 is obviously the more appealing console and the only problem is the price. If PS3 can get closer to the cost of the premium with the $400 system then the tide will turn in america.

They aren't talking about installed base. Just look at the numbers. Wii is at around 11 million, 360 at 10.5 million, and PS3 at 5 million. Let's assume that the 360 suddenly becomes radioactive and its sales plunge to zero starting next month. Let's also assume "distant third" means a spread of some 6 million units, which is the current sales gap between the wii and the PS3 (that's not really "distant," but what the heck). Thus, in order for the 360 installed base to slip to a "distant third" by 2009, there would have to be about 16-17 million PS3s in the wild, with the wii anywhere between 15.9 and 12 million, while the 360 stays put at 10.5 million. The PS3 would have to move at least 11-12 million units between now and 2009 (400-500 thousand/month), assuming that no more 360's are ever sold. That's not likely to happen, and that's not what DFC are predicting.

Instead, what DFC are saying is that PS3 annual sales will finally take the lead in 2009, with the 360 trailing in third. Note that they did not say that the 360's sales would decrease; just that they won't increase as much as the PS3's.

So, if you do the math, even if PS3 sales account for the bulk of the predicted 42% increase in annual industry revenues in 2009, it may not be sufficient for the PS3 to overtake the 360's cumulative installed base within the console's life cycle of 6 years. Remember that the 360 has outsold the PS3 for more than 2 years already. In order to pull even, the PS3 would have to outsell the 360 by the same margin for the same amount of time, and since the PS3 wasn't even around during the 360's first year, it would have to literally blow away the 360 sales-wise for a year to make up for MS's 12 month head start.

Under most reasonable estimates, it will probably take the PS3 until 2010-2011 to equal the installed base of the 360. By then it may not mean much anymore, because the next generation of consoles will be waiting in the wings. That's actually bad news for Sony. The 360 will have an older installed base (pre-2009), so most 360 owners will have had their console for a longer period, and will be looking forward to the next big thing. In contrast, if the DFC predictions hold true, the bulk of the PS3 installed base will have been recently purchased machines (2009 up), too soon for an upgrade. Hence Sony may once again concede a head start to MS.

ofcourse i want my investment in the xbox 360 to pay off just as you want your investment in the ps3. but i am not blinded to reality if the ps3 was selling more than the xbox and i was saying nah the xbox will beat the ps3 by 2009 wont you call me mad.both system have very good games coming out. just as great games will come out on the ps3 console so will be the same for the 360 and i think this console race will be a close one as in no clear winner between the ps3 and the xbox 360 well like i said only time will tell

Can't say I didn't see it coming. It is just like last gen. PS2 didn't have that many good games at the beginning of its life but, towards the end it outlives both other consoles by a longshot. I mean it released GOW2, Okami, and FFXII. Sony systems are made to last long.

me break it down for everyone, the Unified Shader does not need the CPU to process graphics. It processes the graphics by itself allowing the CPU to perform other task more efficently. The hardware in the 360 is built for the future minus the RROD but when Microsoft fixes the problem oooh boy we in trouble.

this ps2 user has an xbox360 and a ps3. i also had the first xbox. and if they come out with a new xbox any year i will buy it because i have had the best gaming experience thus far on the 360. If you own both system you cant say that you havent enjoyed gaming on the 360 far more than the ps3.

The ps2 launched in October of 2000 at $299 :-O.
By March of 2002 they had 30 million sold.They didnt drop to $199 until May of 2002 (Thats under 2 years by the way.) How is it that it wouldnt "sell hella consoles at $249?"

And microsoft cant keep dropping prices. To go from making profit on every console to going back negative, that will make them look desperate. Gaming, like i said, isnt really important to them. They arent going to lose stock holders to win this gaming war.

Also, so what if they release a new SKU? Are you really going to buy xbox 3 after they cut off support for last gen? The ps3 will wait 3 years then release another SKU right after that, making the xbox console obsolete again. Dev's will say "oh its too hard to program for the new xbox, and the ps3 has such a huge install base."

Actually, even the damn Gamecube sold more consoles in the same amount of time (LOLOLOLOL) oh wow. Thing is, i like the xbox360, but for it to beat the ps3 priced at $299, it needed to be selling like the Wii has been the whole strectch of this year. 2009 is more than possible, and the next xbox will be analyzed by sony, and they will launch something better.

Let's see... the Wii on my HDTV looks like a pile of elephant turd... and by 2009 everyone needs an HDTV to accept digital (not analog) signals. The Big N needs a new console before anyone else.

The 360 is fine, but MSFT has to keep showering it with exclusive love in the next 3-4 years to ensure its lifecycle goes beyond its predecessor.

Given that we know Halo 3 will be huge, and that major exclusives like Fable 2, Halo Wars and inevitably Gears of War 2 (not to mention the Mass Effect trilogy)... I think MSFT has provided a strong platform that will last longer than the first Xbox did. The first Xbox was an experiment... and because of Halo one that MSFT decided had succeeded enough to warrant a second console.

Now they have a decent market position... and frankly, I see the Wii fading before the 360 or the PS3. As for the PS3 picking up steam... well, if they keep losing exclusives, then the publishers are going to go to where the install base is.

The 360's biggest problem is Microsoft because they won't diversify their gaming library. While Sony's big games are more diversified and for every region. See how Sony's big games are spread across both regions? I mean why do you guys think Nintendo caught Microsoft so quickly? For all of those who are complaining about "if or if not" microsoft realeases a new console in 2009/2010 think of this; How long ago did vhs fully disapear, about 2 years ago? yet Sony is trying to get everyone to change from DVD to bluray, correct? how often do you replace your mobile/cell phone? every year ot two and they arent cheap, then you have ipods mps players, pc's all getting updated every year or two and does anyone complain that they get replaced? So what is the difference between a console and other technology?.... i rest my case

Even if PS3 might start showing some really damn good looking games, 360 won't be far behind in GFX, it never will. Wii... it will never reach 360/PS3 quality in GFX.
PS3 will move to a lead only if Blu-ray becomes dominant over DVD/HD-DVD or any other formats that are already coming, better than Blu-ray.

What comes to games, 360 currently has much more deeper and rich games than PS3. PS3 only tries to be so damn good looking and is failing to deliver good gaming experience.
360 will have loads and loads of more good games, that also looks good enough considering this "next-gen" seem to be all about GFX (beats most of the current PS3 games in GFX if not all).

PS2 is selling like hotcakes even now, why would it not be possible with 360 in future? Think about it, great community, loads of games, cheaper price and quality not far from PS3 (current quality PS3 offers is lower). Extremely nice LIVE service.

PS3 is here to last the next 10 year according to Sony. 360 is made for gaming only, not to last 10 years. In 10 years any current machine will feel ancient.

I read the title and then thought damn Ps3 would be distant 4th then. Magically some new console comes inbetween 1st (wii) and 2nd (360) and takes over the market of 360.

Seriously, it would happen when:

1. Ps3 has 100+ games out of which 70+ would be higher rated than 360 games
2. Better ports on ps3
3. P3 price is dropped to 199$
4. Better online features
5. More demos and games coming out then 360
6. 360 stops making games.

A price drop wouldn't help. No, it would take a close out clearance sale, which would essentially slash the price in half. Price drops are strategic marketing moves: they won't do em unless they're in that possition, and they never go big.

What's PS3 track so far?

Start at $600 with a $500 variant, drop off a 20gb model, drop the 60GB down to $500, add a paltry 80GB at the previous $600, and what do you have? Still the same price points, a $500 and a $600.

Now, take MS's path. Start at $400, make a $300 variant, KEEP that core version as the optional for any gamer that choses NOT to have such luxurious features, introduce a newer more outfitted version for those who do at $480, and at the same time still promote the PREMIUM as the perfect middle for all, while not forcing them to support HD-DVD unless they see it as there prime choice, at cost of $200.

NOW CUT THOSE PRICES, since core is $279 premium is $349 and elite is $449, and the hd-dvd is $179. They've actually lowered price points across the board, and at the same time implemented new revisions and still kept the premium as the target config.

if sony doesn't get it's act together they will be the ones coming in a distant last. no one expected the 360 to take off as they did.and they are doing what they have to do to get their old fanbase to come aboard as well as new ones. my friend who is a long time sony supporter just recently brought a 360. because it's cheaper on his pocket and they have the games he whats. i may get a ps3 when the price come down and they prove to me that they are worth the buy. i don't care about MGS4 or FF, R&C, so at this point they have nothing that says run out and get me

Even if MS developed a better system that can play higher than 1080p. Sony will only give you an upgrade for that PS3 through the PSN so MS making another system right now is just pointless.
The only thing that MS has right now that isn't Multi platform is Halo 3, GOW, Mass Effect, and Bioshock.
That's only 4 games not much of a line up if you ask me.
If you ask me starting with Elder Scrolls Oblivion the PS3 has been getting better game comparisons.
The only games that have ever looked better on the Xbox 360 were those EA sports games and even then Peter Moore is the CEO of both EA and MS so he's doing it on purpose to make the PS3 fall because he's knows it's eventually going to win.
MS is only big in games because of Halo if it wasn't for that the console would be dead.
Nintendo also has nothing in the way of hardware and games so that's not even a concern.
I guarantee you once the 40gb comes out around Christmas and the newer PSP as well Sony would have won.
Because that's the only reason why the PS3 is being held back price and with the 40gb being $400 and with the deal of Spider man 3 on blu-ray being packed in along with 7 other blu-ray discs free packed in It's a rap PS3 wins.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
