Does 3DS = N64?

Nintendo is ramping up to release one of their most anticipated systems to date: The 3DS. There’s all sorts of nifty features and new technology that make any video gamer drool when they think about the upcoming handheld. If one looks past that initial excitement and into the distance, though, dark clouds are visible on the horizon. And they look a lot like the storm that overtook the Nintendo 64.

Of course, the storm that overtook Nintendo’s third home console was the Sony Playstation. The real reason the SS 64 capsized, however, was their inability to adapt to a shifty new enemy. A plethora of elements conspired to bring them down and push them under. And while the clouds are there for the 3DS, they aren’t from the same source. Nintendo’s “enemy of the future” is at the gates: Nintendo Vs. Apple has only just begun.

How many "wars" has Nintendo been in for its handhelds? The first real one was when PSP came out and before that handheld competition was just plain terrible. Remember the N Gauge anyone? That was nintendos handheld "competition" before sony.

So yeah nintendo 1 Sony: Zero Really impressive win streak /s

Millah5594d ago

Uh let's see, there was the Atari Lynx, there was the Nomad, there was the Turbo Express, there was the Gamate, there was the Neo Geo pocket, there was the Wonderswan, there was PSP....oh and let's not forget there was also the Game Gear.

Nintendo has never faced competition in handhelds before the PSP eh? Lol, it might be helpful if you actually had a f-ing clue what you were talking about moron.

Dsnyder5594d ago

You act like those handhelds are actually worth a damn. Nintendo has ALWAYS had a monopoly in the handheld business up until an actual major competitor (ie sony psp) stepped up to challenge them. So no one can really say that nintendo has one more than 1 hand held console war because in order to win a war, you have to be fighting something. Thats just a fact.

poopface15594d ago (Edited 5594d ago )

that all fell to the older gameboy??

I had a GG and gameboy back in the day, GG was color but gameboy was much better all around. GG used 6 batteries and ran out far to quick. How about the NOMAD that was a portable genesis? or the LYNX? Neo Geo pocket?

nintendo is really good at balancing the features of their handhelds.

say what you will, all 3 of nintendos handhelds have beaten ALL of the competitions so far. Contrary to your limited knowledge, that is actually a lot of competitors. gameboy is still sweet even today.

Edit---66well that guy beat me too it. Gameboy, one of the oldest, is one of the few that is still awesome to play today. Gamegear was defiantly competion for gameboy.

The thing that's most annoying about these type of sensationalism articles is that the authors always compare the 3DS to the iPhone, and act like a market for dedicated gaming devices doesn't exist anymore. Um sorry, but the market still exists. The reason the iPods are selling so well is because they are multifunctional pocket computers for 199 dollars with excellent media capabilities, and their install base isn't comprised of just "gamers" therefore they have a larger demographic. But that's not what Nintendo makes. They make gaming platforms, not computer platforms. And I'm personally glad Nintendo is going for what they're strong at, instead of just hopping on the newest bandwagon. iPods and iPhones will always sell more than gaming platforms because well the phone market is about a billion times larger than the gaming market. But that doesn't mean that gaming devices still can't be successful.

I love my iPhone, but the fact is that I still want an amazing dedicated gaming device that offers a more traditional gaming experience, and I'm sure there's tons of gamers out there that feel the same. iPhone games are good time killers, but they're not core gaming experiences.

So please sensationalist journalists, stop comparing a pure gaming platform to a handheld computing platform. It's two different things.

Spinal5593d ago

Well said Millah, + Agree/bubble for you sir.

poopface15594d ago

I dont expect people to buy a big time 30-40$ game for the iphone. Nor do I expect those gaems to even be made for them.

People buy 3ds/PSP2 for games first, people buy Iphone for a multitude of reasons before games. They buy small cheap games that can be enjoyed in spurts. many people who buy smaller simple games on phones dont play more involved videogames.

it goes like this

Gameboy=NES

GBA=SNES

DS=N64

3DS= GCN

and no, its not gonna lose. the 3DS slim will fix its battery misteps.

ps3360games5594d ago (Edited 5594d ago )

the DS is more like the SNES 1.5

the 3ds is more like the ps2 or n64 1.5

Shok5594d ago

Have you seen the best-looking DS games? How does the DS=SNES 1.5 when Metroid Prime Hunters and Moon look better than any N64 games?

How does the 3DS=N64 1.5 when it has graphics comparable to GameCube games? PS2 games had tons of jaggies and washed-out looking textures - look at any 3DS game and you'll see a huge graphical leap.

And these are just the first-generation 3DS titles. Imagine how they'll look 3-5 years from now. As time goes by, games' graphics only get better and better.

extraguya5594d ago

No way man. The 3DS is a capable device for sure. You're underselling it.

Orionsangel5594d ago (Edited 5594d ago )

Are you drugs? DS is not SNES 1.5. When did the SNES run Mario64? GBA was based off SNES hardware. It's why they easily ported SMB2&3 from Mario All Stars and called them Super Mario Advance, not to mention Super Mario World as a Super Mario Advance game. Mario64 on DS. See a pattern here? You don't have to be Einstein to figure these things out.

Rush5594d ago

The 3DS will certainly be more powerful then the PS2, the Iphone 4 destroys the PS2 graphically with 300mb games compared to 4700mb PS2 games.

poopface15594d ago

is tha twhy the DS had mario 64 on it?

I never owned a DS and I know that.

Orionsangel5594d ago

Yep you basically got it right. Nintendo keeps reusing it's previous console hardware and modifying it to be a handheld. It's easier that way. It's just a matter of shrinking the technology and you can more easily port over classics.

3DS = GCN. I'm not sure about that one. I'd need to see more 3DS games running.

Masterchef20075594d ago

i hope so cause 2-5 hours seems pathetic to me. Plus hopefully when the slim comes out the price will go down as well. And hopefully they wont abuse the market and release 5 different versions of the same console

5594d ago
Masterchef20075594d ago (Edited 5594d ago )

and its wrong to wait for a better version of the handheld? Nintendo did it with the Gameboy by releasing the horrid fat yellow screen one and after that they released the pocket which was great. Or with the DS with the DS fat, DSlite, DSI. I just want to wait for a better version of the 3ds cause 2-5 hours seems a bit short for a nintendo handheld

Stealth20k5594d ago

Sorry but nintendo has been the handheld king forever and if you hadnt noticed the ds has sold more than any system in history ever has.

"3-5" hours is with wifi on, 3d on at max, volume on at max

Otherwise you get probably as much time from 3ds games that you do ds games.

So I would say this person needs to go away

extraguya5594d ago

By that logic the PS3 should have been the runaway winner this generation, given the success the PS2 had. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way... things can change. The battery is the smallest issue raised here anyway.

Shok5594d ago

Exactly dude. That's with all of it's features on at once. And Nintendo has always given the bare MINIMUM amount of time for battery life with it's handheld, but when consumers get their hands on it some can play for 8-10 hours.

I'm sure if you're just playing a single-player game then you can get a good 8 hours in.

Masterchef20075594d ago

i am just going to wait for reviews and see what they say

Moac5594d ago

So the 3DS could possibly run Wii titles (with some adjustments), such as Mario Galaxy?

has anyone compared the specs and looked at the possibility?
is there any site that clearly goes into the "power" of the 3DS, now that we know the Full specs of it.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer57d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot57d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno57d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay57d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno55d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK56d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
