Digital Foundry vs HDMI video

This one should be a no-brainer right? Everyone knows that HDMI is a digitally lossless form of transmitting audio and video, so it stands to reason that the cables - no matter how cheap or expensive - should either work or not work. There is no middle ground here.

But has anyone ever actually tested this, by directly capturing the traffic of the HDMI port using multiple cables of varying quality? Is there any actual need for this £655 HDMI cable?

My MS HDMI Cable Works Perfectly & I Didnt Pay A Price Tag Of More Than Two PS3 Slim's

Strange_Evil5602d ago (Edited 5602d ago )

I'd never blow more than 10-15$ on a HDMI cable.. The only priority which I take is that the leads should be Gold plated...

Lol I pity the fool who would buy the 655£ HDMI cable. You can buy a PS3 and a 360 for the same price with normal HDMIs and still have money to spare.

Xbox360PS3AndPC5602d ago

I Bought My MS Official Cable For £10 But It Was Just The Cable & That All I Needed I Didnt Need The Audio Thing

Chimerhazzard5602d ago

In the article, you notice how the authors emphasise that Gold plating is absolutely useless in HDMI cables.

Strange_Evil5602d ago

^^^ It's a usual thumb rule I follow while buying any cables... Don't wanna deal with rusting or flawed connection. Might not be a big deal since HDMI is mainly digital, but you can get gold plated wires for as less as 5-10$, so no big deal in spending 2-3$ more.

If it were a drastic difference like 30-40$, then I would consider, but 5$ doesn't make much difference IMO.

MNicholas5602d ago (Edited 5602d ago )

They have thick jacketing that, when bent, puts excessive strain on the joint.

A cheap cable with minimal jacketing is the best way to go.

I have never had a problem with RF interference.

"The richer colour we see in some 360 Face-Off shots might be explained in some cases because so much development is 360-led: calibration takes place on 360 and isn't corrected on PS3, resulting in the "washed out" look."

^^ That should tell the fanboys a thing or two.

(Also)
360 HDMI is close but can't match the PS3's
or any of the available RGB HDMI settings.

TheTruth895602d ago

@ShinGino

100% Agree.

I Noticed the same thing!
Page 3 remind me 360 vs PS3 comparisons.

$3 HDMI eBay...
Its been working perfectly for 3 years now never had any sort of connection problems and I always take it out of my PS3 and plug it into my laptop but it still works perfectly even with all the pulling and pushing its still got a nice tight fit.

HDMI design is really awesome.

Not to sound like a spamming douche but I buy all the same quality cables for a fraction of the price at MonoPrice. Also, every cable has a lifetime warranty. Forget Monster.

Oner5602d ago (Edited 5602d ago )

^^^ This. Monoprice is the best for all things needing to be wired.

As for the article there are 2 things I found to be a bit curious. The first is this quote ~

"and there are still the occasional suggestions that we're running the PS3 games in limited-range RGB mode (we've been full-range RGB since the year dot, even though most HDMI capture cards still don't work with it properly)"

I am not questioning their use of Full Range but the last sentence that says "most HDMI capture cards still don't work with it properly" is quite a big issue/problem in my eyes. Especially for these questionable "VS" reviews. Secondly is this info ~

Quote

"in practise sticking to RGB in the way that PS3 and PC do is more developer-friendly. He also suggests that the richer colour we see in 360 Face-Off shots might be explained in some cases because so much development is 360-led: calibration takes place on 360 and isn't corrected on PS3, resulting in the "washed out" look. However, even factoring in the REC.709 component standard, this developer also believes that 360 HDMI output does require adjustment."

End Quote

This specific line

"He also suggests that the richer colour we see in 360 Face-Off shots might be explained in some cases because so much development is 360-led: calibration takes place on 360 and isn't corrected on PS3, resulting in the "washed out" look."

Explains a lot in respects to JUST 1 area of a problem with developers doing shoddy ports from 360 to PS3.

Two thumbs up for MonoPrice!!!
I pick up cables from them all the time.
Them or bluejeanscables.

Anon19745602d ago

Yeah, I gotta say, I've been using Monoprice for years now and I've never been disappointed. My brother-in-law asked my advice for a good place to get cables just 3 days ago and I sent him there. He had actually found that site already but had never heard of them so he was hesitant to send them his money, but I wouldn't go anywhere else for cables - even considering I have to get them to ship up to Canada. It's still worth it.

mugoldeneagle035601d ago

As to a matter of whether the hardware works with it. When I first bought my PS3/TV I saw it wasn't worth buying a $80+ dollar cable, but I just bought my parents a new Sony Blu Ray player this Christmas, thinking that one of my 3 HDMI cords, all basic, would work. None of them did, and I had to buy one of the Monsters (as the guide said)

Didn't matter anyways since I work at Best Buy so I got the cable dirt cheap, but now with a lot of the 3D units people will need the newer cables

ambientFLIER5601d ago

Wtf? How could the guide instruct you to buy super expensive cables, and why wouldn't the player work with a regular one? Is there some kinda of a partnership between the two companies?

Pedobear Rocks5601d ago

You just need HDMI 1.4 cables...you can get cheap non Monster ones too.

Vherostar5601d ago

Its all about cable length they came to this conclusion and I already knew this being a techie. If you need a seriously long cable you are gonna have to buy a decent cable but if your console is near your TV you will never notice a difference between a £1.50 cable and a £400 cable. It's all about how much information is long in transmission and interference.

ChrisW5601d ago (Edited 5601d ago )

The only way you're going to lose [barely] noticeable quality in an HDMI cable is if it's much longer than the standard 3 or 5-meter. Some say that it's around 15-meters or so.

Anywayzzzz, this topic is old. Very old, i.e. since the advent of HDMI. The sad, SAD thing is, people are still fooled by the marketers.

mantisimo5601d ago (Edited 5601d ago )

CHRISW

Yeah that's exactly right the drop off is between 15-17 metres (which is a very long cable indeed)(graphs on the internet if you search). I use a £1.00 Roughly 2 US dollar chinese hdmi cable and it gives exactly the same output as a £350 monster etc brand.

I was in a panasonic shop shopping for a TV and was very angry when a chap who was buying a 50inch TV was almost being forced to buy a £200.00 cable and argued the point with the store worker. He told me I was talking crap so I showed the gentleman the data online ( my phone browser)and asked him to plug in my (£5.00) cable I had just bought from another shop.

The shopper bought the TV and went to buy a cheap cable from the shop next door and the shop assistant acceeded that yes he could tell no difference but was told by head office that there was a "Big" difference.

So as shown in the source test as long as the cable works there is Jack difference because it is a digital carrier.

Sum it up DONT buy a cable for more than a few pounds or dollars and then be really smug when your mate shows you his fantastic new cable from Monsters inc that cost him the price of another TV!

Finnaly a good freakin article on N4G for once.

Very informative and helpful.

I use to think hmm there must be some difference, from a £1.50 and a £30 HDMI cable.

So i use to just buy the price in between, around £10 HDMI leads.

this is great, and if i ever need another HDMI cable, i'll just for the cheapest i can find.

morganfell5602d ago

Just wait. Lens of Truth will chime in with an article stating all of the findings by Digital Foundry are incorrect.

Kon5602d ago

Oh, man, £655 for an HDMI cable? That is insane!

KeiserSosay47885602d ago

I figured this too, awhile back...good read(rare these days)

branchedout5602d ago

I've bought over 10 HDMI cables, and the total price of them all put together is less than $25.

'Cause let's face it. You can never have too many HDMI cables. A friend might need one 'cause he got a new PS3, or someone got a set-top-box streamer or something. And at about 2 bucks or so a pop, why not be there?

I've never noticed a single drop in quality. Or else my eyes are bad.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle12d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga20d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199220d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga20d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman20d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box20d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion19d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7220d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7520d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit20d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14920d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7720d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
